Breastfeeding

Number of feeds/bottles at 3 months

I breast feed and pump now that I returned to work. My daughter (2months and 2 weeks) typically eats every two to three hours when I am with her for 20-30 minutes. When we are appart she gets a 4oz bottle every 2-3 hours. My question is when or if I should increase the amount in each bottle and decrease the number of feeds durring the day? Or should we continue with the current amount and schedule until we start solids? Tia

  • FTM, so don't take this as absolute, but it's my understanding that the amount doesn't need to really change since your BM will change as lo grows. Because BM digests so efficiently I think it's pretty normal for 3hrs feeds to continue until solid become a bigger part of the diet. Hopefully someone with an older LO can confirm.

I did bump DS's daycare bottles to 4.5 because he's STTN note and his weight gain had been on the low end of normal. I just wanted to get in a little extra during the day.

  • I began sending 2.5-3 ounce bottles for DD when I went back to work when she was 7 weeks old. The sitter feeds her on demand; approximately every 1.5-3 hours. She rarely goes 3 hours in between, though, because she sleeps 5+ hours at one time through the night. Just continue having daycare/sitter feed on demand and adjust accordingly.

I ask my sitter to begin each feeding with a 3 ounce bottle and if she's still hungry, offer one more ounce until satisfied. This has worked well for us.

  • Mine started DC at 3 months and I wasn't sure how much he would drink so I sent 12 bottles of 2 oz each. He drank 2 at a time every 2 hours. So now I send 6, 4 oz bottles and he usually drinks 4 at school but they can give him another if 4 oz isn't enough. He hasn't wanted more so far. He will drink 6 oz right before night sleep and when he wakes in morning though. He's 3.5 months now
