The paranoia over listeria makes me laugh...they said something about lunch meat and soft serve in my parenting class yesterday and I laughed out loud. Seriously.
The health code standards in place for these places is so strict, unless you're buying it from a drug shack in East Harlem your chances of contracting anything are ridiculously slim. The recent listeria outbreaks I've heard of have been from cantaloupe and cheese (not the soft ones everyone is so scared of). You had a better chance of harming your baby by getting hit by a cab yesterday than you do from that ice cream.
*Slowly turns around and returns the half-eaten cone to the drug shack. Suggests they keep the money for my own stupidity. Walks in shame back to the 4/5/6...*
Perhaps we're such a nice, calm, polite BMB because we're not denying ourselves the yummies that other people do? I feel bad for our future children, the issues they will very obviously have, but at least we're happy, right?
This seems like a great place to mention that Dairy Queen now does blizzards in waffle cones. Friggin delicious.
Yes! The confetti cake blizzard is so good! I haven't had it in a waffle cone, but I am very tempted to try it next time... Which might end up being today, after I go out for sushi :-)
Addendum to my earlier post - like most delicious things here in NYC, soft serve is best served as a street food from a food truck. Who has time here to walk INTO an actual soft serve establishment and wait in line for that nonsense?!
I hope you made it a double! Eating for two!
Oh god now i want halal cart chicken white sauce hot sauce. THANKS ABASTIAN.
Gah! Now I am craving my favorite night time only halal cart in the city. With extra pita bread, extra white sauce and a cherry dip mr softee for dessert.
Seriously someone said something to me about eating street meat while pregnant a few months ago. Too busy eating the deliciousness to argue with him. Me and baby are fine. May as well go get a deli hero while I'm at it.
Fuck it now I really want sushi. I've been trying to avoid it I have a feeling the rice will put me over my carb limit and there is nothing sadder than having to limit your sushi intake. I figured it would be less painful to abstain altogether...
I celebrated a good ultrasound a few weeks ago with salmon tartar and a glass of champagne at my favourite restaurant. Fries on the side were served with homemade mayo - raw eggs eeek!
on a serious note... is it really ok to eat sushi? I feel like I would be more comfortable doing it at this point in pregnancy than earlier but it still kind of freaks me out. I do eat lox (smoked salmon) so I guess it's not really that different? I guess I just feel like out of all the "no-no food" that's one of the big ones. I would love some sushi right about now

I eat the rolls. I don't really like shasimi which is what I would want to stay away from more but I've heard that here in the US it is all flash frozen anyways so it's not like you are getting fish flown across the states and put on a plate. I also heard that there was something to do with mercury that was a no no but I don't eat it often enough to worry. I could be way wrong though.

But omg dynamite rolls. Or volcano rolls.
Sashimi?
Just isn't the same....
Also all the wasabi and soy sauce....
I just can't wait to toss the diet restrictions out the window postpartum.
I feel like a crazy person. I was asking about listeria a few weeks ago. But I had gotten very, very sick after eating cold cuts.
Either way my doctor and nurse did have a good chuckle on my behalf. He said he's seen 1 case in 20 years, and the mom had goat cheese from some tiny farm. in vermont, so like, zero health codes.
Sushi is the one thing I haven't done but to be fair I don't really trust the sushi in this land locked state. Now if I were in Alaska still I would be alllll over it. I didn't do the deli meat for the first trimester but that was because I was afraid of everything. I try and sleep on my back but it makes me nauseous.

Agreed! I cannot wait till I can have ice cream, sushi, red velvet cheesecake! After reading this thread I want it all. I'm adding it all to my post partum menu this diet is not my favorite
I drove 20 minutes to get a Wendy's frostee last night. My baby was in greater danger of getting run over by a train on the way there then getting listeria. Relax. Also, my neighbor used to own a mister softee truck, I miss that shit hardcore. Vanilla in a cup with hard cherry coating and rainbow sprinkles baby!!!
Eta: I just remembered I had TCBY white chocolate yogurt with butterfingers earlier in the day too.
I love cherry dipped cones!!! Seriously, meant to be Also, tomorrow night after our birthing class we're continuing the tradition of going to get frozen yogurt afterwards. I can't wait!
If you are avoiding soft serve, I hope you are also avoiding fountain soda. It's all about the improper cleaning of the machines, not the actual food being unpasteurized.

I'm totally late to this thread. I figured it was another poop talk or a rant about an SO. So, uh yeah - apparently I WILL have a Velociraptor due to everything I have eaten this pregnancy! When was soft serve ever listed as a no go? I average soft serve about once a week thanks to a kid that works somewhere that has it. I have cold cuts every now and then, have eaten sushi 3 times in the last 7 months and have had my hair dyed 3 times as well. Oh and I had a big ol' swig of Hubs Red's Strawberry Ale yesterday- it was delicious! I get the risks need to be put out there but I mostly side eye all of this fear mongering that comes with it. My oldest is 17 and when I was pregnant with him, the only no go items were basically alcohol, cigarettes and limit fish intake.
After reading this thread yesterday I totally went for a soft serve cone. Was amazing! Plus, really helped calm my acid reflux while I waited for a pill to kick in.
Do you also make it with the milk of unicorns? "Oh man, this unpasteurized iced unicorn cream in a gluten free quinoa waffle cone is amahhhzing!"
Hahaha! I'm just teasing you back! ;D
Well If you wanna get all technical it would be a homemade soaked and sprouted organic wheat waffle cone with organic raw goats milk ice cream sweetened with raw local honey or maple syrup and flavored with vanilla breans, topped with homemade organic chocolate crackle sauce and soaked and dried pecans yum yum hahahaha
I've heard about this soft serve thing, but I just ignore it because I loves me some froyo and my RE never said anything about soft serve so F that! I have it at least once a week, and will probably have it more now that
the weather is getting nice. We have one within walking distance of our
house! The only thing my RE said was to avoid uncooked fish and unpasturized cheeses - these are the only two rules that I've actually followed during pregnancy. REs are in the business of getting you pregnant, and they want you to stay pregnant for their stats, so in my mind what they say trumps all.
Also, my highlights were so bad and ugly and grown out that I gave in and had my hair dyed a couple weeks ago. And on my way home, I got a sub...no, seriously, I actually did and it was delicious. I'm a horrible mother. 8-|

Well I just failed this pregnancy if I'm not supposed to have soft serve. I ate soft serve frozen yogurt all the time at the beginning of my pregnancy. I get DQ blizzards and because of this thread, I went and got not a small but a LARGE frozen chocolate custard dipped in chocolate today. Yup....my baby girl is going to come out with 5 eyes.
June 2014 - June Siggy Challenge - Favorite Hottie
Lol @crhein26 - I'm guilty too! Because of reading this, my second lunch was a DQ medium cherry dipped chocolate cone and baby girl is dancing away now.
I'm so glad I randomly opened this thread! And I totally thought poop!
I have eaten: sushi, sashimi, ceviche, cold deli meat, soft cheese, goat milk products, unwashed fruit samples at the grocery store, wine, tea, and caffeinated stuff. I have also been dying my hair consistently, getting it done for occasions, doing mani/pedis, hiking, and pilates. I am very happy if I can go to sleep in any position. I went to rural India at 12 weeks where I obviously ate stuff without knowing what all was in it and with questionable hygiene and went over unpaved roads in a jeep.
My doctor is fine with all this and since LO has bruised my ribs with her robust and constant kicking, I guess it hasn't harmed her. Or maybe it's making her stronger.
What the holy hell is wrong with cheesecake?!?!?! It's baked so the eggs are cooked (along with all the other ingredients) and the no-bake ones don't have eggs. I'm seriously starting to think people are just making things up at this point. Like there's some group of moms getting trashed on Chardonnay somewhere starting internet rumors for fun. Like "OMG....next, let's say high fructose corn syrup causes toxoplasmosis!! They put that shit in everything!! It'll be HILARIOUS!"
I ate soft serve today, a swirl sugar cone. It was glorious. My baby kicked the crud out if me during and after and I plan repeat this in the very near future. I also love tuna sandwiches and have about one or two a month. I am enjoying this pregnancy much more than my previous probably because I'm not worrying about every little possible thing that could put my baby at risk.

Probably helps that my dr told me not to worry about eating sushi, deli meats, or soft serve, that I'd be fine...
