Breastfeeding

Last minute reminders

I am scheduled to have a csection in the next few hours with baby #2. I only last 3 weeks breastfeeding with my first baby due to trouble latching and frustration. I have read and researched a lot this time about breastfeeding, but now my nerves have caused everything I know to go out the window, any last minute tips or reminders for successful breastfeeding after a c section?

Lots of skin to skin time and nurse nurse nurse!  Meet with the lactation consultant as early and often as possible to get as much support as you can while you're there.  Congratulations!! You'll do great!  Try not to worry.  :)

  • Lots of skin to skin as soon as you deliver. Keep visitors to a minimum. Ask the LCs for advice. Wait for milk to come in and if it takes too long and your baby is hungry, don't be afraid to use 1oz of formula if you need to.
    *Don't stress
*your baby will know what to do
    *eat & drink well
*get rest when you can (have baby at RN station while you rest)

    Any other Q's?

  • Congrats!  Take in all the advice you can get from you nurses... they are great resources as well!  There was nothing left for the LC to help me with by the time I met with her.  Have patience!  Feeding sessions can be long  (very, very long) and tiring, but will be worth it after you and LO get the hang of it!  and Relax! the beginning can be pretty stressful and frustrating, as long as LO has the wet and dirty diapers he needs then you both are doing well!

  • Hope you and your new LO are getting plenty of practice! Don't forget to ask for the hospital LC. Follow up with her or an independent IBCLC if necessary after release

  • Don't be afraid to nurse often! Even if you feel like you JUST DID THIS.... Everything you read and think you forgot will come back. Your body wants to nurse. But don't get down on yourself if it gets hard. Stress over low supply will cause low supply! Enjoy it!!! Congrats!!!
