Flying with a infant. Nervous

We booked a flight to go visit my mom before I go back to work. Hudson will be almost 8 weeks. Going alone without dh. I'm nervous. He has been very fussy lately. I bf and also use formula so if he is hungry I will probably bottle feed him on plane/public. Any advice STM for traveling? Packing diaper bag? Tricks?

Buy him a seat so not only do you have his car seat, but he and everyone else is safer.

  • No advice, as I'm a FTM, but best of luck! I'm nervous about running errands with LO. You're brave, you can do it!
  • It'll be a breeze! The noise and vibration will knock lo right out. Wait to feed until takeoff to ease the pressure on lo's ears since they can't pop them on their own. Take 2 changing pads and a change of clothes for the baby and you. Overall just relax. The baby is more likely to freak out if you are a ball of stress. The absolute worst that can happen is the he will cry...with how loud planes are, the majority of the passengers won't even hear it. If you feel guilty, buy those in your immediate vicinity a drink. I think you will find most people to be very understanding of a newborn...even if they scream nonstop it's still better than a kid who kicks the back of your seat for 2 hours!!
  • @clo1982 thanks for the suggestion of buying close passengers drinks if he is fussy. Good idea if needed.

  • I wish I was sitting close to you so I could enjoy one of those drinks you might buy...

  • Along the same line as buying people a drink, you could make little candy bags for others on the plane! (It would likely be cheaper than buying people drinks.) I saw this a year or two ago and thought it was a great idea: https://blog.thebump.com/2012/09/05/too-kind-parents-pre-apologize-on-flight/ image

I flew with DS1 at 2 months, and he slept through every flight.  It was super easy.  I didn't buy a seat for him, but I did bring the carseat with the snap and go stroller to the gate.  At the gate I asked if there were free seats, and if there were, they would give me the free seat to take the carseat on.  If not, I just checked the seat and the stroller at the gate.

  • Flying with an infant is a breeze!  Don't stress :)

At the risk of sounding like a bitch though, don't worry or even think about the other passengers...at all.  You do what you need to do for you and the baby, if he's crying don't worry - that's what headphones were invented for and most people travel with them.  It's only a 2 hour flight - not the end of the world!

Many airports won't let you wear the baby through security, so personally I wouldn't even bother trying and then having to get them out/back in if they don't let you.  When I flew solo with DD1 as a baby, I brought only one bag with diaper stuff/my stuff  that I could wear messenger style and have my hands free.  She went through the airport in her car seat in the Snap n' Go.  When I got to security, I took her and her seat off the SNG, put the stroller on the belt (it has to go through the x-ray), put my bag on the belt, then got her out of the car seat and threw that on as well.

Once through security, I put her back in the car seat (unbuckled, on the floor), got the SNG down/open, put my bag back on and then got the car seat back on the stroller.  It was really easy...probably easier than it sounds!  And people around me were very helpful and patient.  I also gate checked the stroller and car seat, DD wanted to be held on the flight anyway so an extra seat would have been a waste of money IMO.

Newborns are really the easiest to travel with :) It's the toddlers you have to worry about.

  • Infants are easy. Wear baby through airport and use stroller to hold the car seat and diaper bag. You can gate check stroller. Nurse or feed at take off and landing.
