baby + moving + new job?

I think it has somewhat been discussed before, but would you consider moving and starting a new job 2-3 months after having a baby? This is our second child, and we are starting to consider moving to another town in the same state to be closer to DH's family. We currently live near my family, but feel that for the long term the area he is from might be a better fit for us and the kids. I'm a teacher, so while the job wouldn't be completely different from what I do now, I'd likely be looking into a regular education position, whereas I'm in special education right now. I'd like to think that everything wouldn't be too mentally or physically overwhelming, but then again I've never had a baby, moved, and started a brand new job within that short span of time. I'm sure some of you can relate by having been in a similar situation. What is your take?

TIA :)

Re: baby + moving + new job?

  • We don't have a choice. My husband was offered a wonderful promotion that is taking us 15 hours from our family. At least you have the option to move closer to family where you could have some extra hands to help. We'll be moving about 2 months after the baby is born. I am blessed because this new job allows me to be a stay at home mom and I never would have made my husband make the choice to pass up the promotion which is a wonderful career path for him and our family. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices. If the benefits outweigh the stress of a move I would absolutely consider it.

  • I think it's worth considering. We live about 15 hours from family and I'm sure it would be nice to be closer.

I'm a teacher too. Is there a good job market there? Usually Special Ed. is easier to find a position in than regular ed. Could you make things work if you don't find a job? I think starting a new teaching job with a new baby would be very difficult. I switched districts last year and it was REALLY difficult and that was without a baby but I work in Spanish immersion and was helping build a grade level.

  • This is what we may be doing. We are waiting to see if DH gets a job offer and if I can get a good job offer. If so, we will  move across the country in July.

  • We are trying to move this summer, but in our same area. I'm also a SPED teacher. For me, we rely on my salary and benefits more than DH, so I wouldn't want to switch districts and lose my tenure right now, but if that's not the case for you, I don't see a problem.

I agree with PP that a SPED job is easier to come by these days. Why the change?
  • I accepted a job transfer and so during maternity leave we are selling our home, packing up, and moving 7 hours away. Scary part is the selling our home. Having to deal with showings, keeping the place clean and what to do if we sell early and have to be out if LO is like 2 weeks old. I'm working until my due date and only taking 10 weeks of mat leave so not alot of time to get everything in order. Plus finding a new pediatrician in a new town plus dr for me, plus day care, plus a rental, plus a new job for DH. It's ALOT. Luckily we have my parents there but they can only do so much.
  • For those who mentioned sped jobs are easier to come by, I understand. My degree is in English education, but I have been working in sped (co-taught and pull-out) since I graduated. There are various reasons I am ready for a change, and it would be too long (and possibly boring) to list them all here. Basically though, I want to plan and teach how I think would best benefit my students, rather than going into someone else's room and adjusting to them. I've had good and bad experiences with that.We will see what opportunities come available and will go from there. Sorry for any formatting issues. I am on mobile!

  • @blessedandhopeful‌ - totally understandable for wanting the switch. In my SD, Sped has much more turnover than regular ed. Would you consider substituting if you can't get a permanent position? If so, I would definitely do the leap. Best of luck!

  • Due May 2, lease is up May 31, trying to find a teaching position close to family. I'm looking for a math position, though.
