Padded fireplace cover

We currently have the Munchkin fireplace bumpers on our brick hearth. I yhink the bumpers would work well on most fireplaces, but the problem is... Our bricks are very rough and the double sided adhesive doesn't hold the pads on very tight. LO is constantly pulling them off to chew on them. The previous homeowners had a padded cover over the fireplace when we originally viewed our house. I am interested in making a cover. Has anyone made one similar to this?

I like the idea that this cover also makes it a usable play surface and extra seating. When we were touring our house we thought it was stupid that they had the hearth covered. Now that we have a kid, I totally get it. My son goes right to the fireplace to pull himself up, rips off the padding and has fallen and bumped the bricks several times. It's right in the middle of our family room so we need it to be safe. I found a great blog that details how she made one. She suggests using indoor/outdoor fabric so that it's stain and water resistant- genius!

@JustPlaneLoved‌ Perfect idea for the padding!!! We have an extra one from college upstairs. I've been hesitant to toss it.
