What does DH really need for the hospital?

Some of the websites I have looked at and my baby book mention a long list of items for him to pack. We only live about 15 minutes from our hospital, so he can go home and shower if he wants. I am thinking a t-shirt, disposable toothbrush, some cash and a small deodorant would do the trick, am I missing something?

Re: What does DH really need for the hospital?

  • I made a short list for DH and it includes clothes (day clothes and sleeping clothes), basic toiletries which I will already be packing in my bag anyway - he just needs to bring his own toothbrush and deodorant. We are also packing some extra bath towels for him but we live further from our hospital than you do, and some extra pillow and a blanket (learned the lesson after having DS1 that they really don't have much at all for the husbands as far as staying overnight comfortably).

  • My husband took his wallet. That was it. He slept in his regular clothes (he doesn't exactly own pjs) and the hospital supplied pillows and blankets. He went home every day to let the dog out and shower and we even lived an hour away. This time around we are 10-15 minutes from the hospital and it think I'll pack less for me this time knowing he can come home and grab it if needed.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • It wouldn't hurt to pack some snacks for both of you.

  • We are 10 mins from the hospital and I agree with what you said. He can go home whenever. He really doesn't need much.
I am also adding some snacks to the bag in case I'm in labor and he doesn't want to run down to the cafeteria. Who knows how long it will take and he will have to go without eating. I am also packing sweatpants since he plans to sleep over.
  • My hospital also supplied a list. We live about half an hour away from the hospital and DH most likely won't be spending the night once the baby is here, unless something comes up. We're just going to pack a change of clothes for him, basic toiletries, and snacks. Plus, the camera, etc. that will also be his responsibility.

  • We live 20 mins away, and DH didn't take anything last time. He went home and showered an changed and just slept in his clothes.

  • We also live about 15 minutes away, and DH got by just fine with some clothes and an overnight bag of toiletries and his phone charger. He just ran to the nearest fast food restaurant to grab his meals.

  • DH is not bringing anything. He'll be back and forth from home and the hospital so he doesn't really need anything.

  • I just packed DH some comfy clothes in my bag along with deodorant and a travel toothbrush. We live about 45 minutes away & it really doesn't make much sense for him to have to go back & forth.
  • The hospital is seriously about 3 minutes from where we live. It's right down the hill. But I want DH to be with me and the baby for the vast majority of the first day (I have to get another C/S). So I'm bringing snacks and comfy clothes and everything he would need for a day. He'll probably sleep at the hospital with me the first night to make sure I can get up and get the baby if needed, but then will be at home with Shorty the other nights I need to be there. He probably has to run in to work for a few hours the day after the C/S too. But my parents will be with me, when DH has to be gone, so it'll work out.

For FTMs, when we had Shorty, DH didn't leave my side for the 4 days we were in the hospital. It was amazing and a great comfort to me to know he was right there. You might find that you want your partner there more than you thought, so I'd at least pack overnight stuff for him, just in case.

  • Change of clothes and a toothbrush...especially if you live close.  We live 55 minutes away and that is all my husband brings.

  • Pack as if he's spending the night even if you think he will run home, he may not want to or be able to. I was bedridden for 30 hours after delivery last time so it would have been pretty inconvenient for him to leave me when I couldn't even get out of bed myself. And he didn't want to leave either.

And yes to snacks. Not just for him but for you too.

  • We're close too - I was thinking one change of clothes, and snacks. That's basically all he requires, haha. Toothbrush and whatever he would need for the AM etc

  • We ended up with a 6 day stay last time.  DH never left my side.  I had a 40+ hour induction turned c-section.  Given DD is at home with family, he would most likely go home for part of our stay this time if I end up having a c-section again.

His parents ended up stopping at our house to grab him some extras.  But he brought 2 outfits, toothbrush, and shorts/t-shirts to sleep in.  It would have been weird to me to have the nurses coming in during the night with DH in his underwear.

  • DH went home every day to take care of the dog and to sleep (he wasn't allowed to stay over, which was good for us).  So all I brought was stuff for him for the day of induction and that included:  His ipad & charger, a magazine, some cash and some snacks.  I'd say that if you only live 15 minutes away don't bother packing much he can go home and shower.

We are about 20 minutes away, and he will go home to shower, so just:

Sweatpants and t-shirt to sleep in (get a fresh set when he showers)
    Pillow
    iPad and charger
    Phone and charger
    Cash
    Snacks
    Toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Make sure he has a sweatshirt and pants.  I wanted the room as cold as humanly possible and DH was freezing.

We are first timers and DH is planning to be there the entire time despite living 15 minutes away. (Plus my parents are staying at our place until we come home) and if all goes somewhat to plan he will be helping me labor in the shower or tub so my list is: ratty to shirt for him, 2 pairs shorts (we live in nc so it will be fairly
Warm), 3 pairs boxers, sleep shirt, 1 bathing suit, toothbrush (we share toothpaste), 3 changes of shirt, pillow, snacks, deodorant, shaving cream and razor. We will share shower stuff.

ETA: after reading PP I think a sweatshirt will get thrown in there
