Biting

So, I've got a biter. and it hurts A LOT! When she first latches on, I cringe and curl my toes because it hurts so bad. And then during feeding, if she gets distracted, she'll bite once or twice when she starts to suck again. Any advice on how I can stop this? Will the pain at the initial latch eventually go away?

Re: Biting

  • is your LO really only 6 weeks old? or is your ticker wrong?

biting, in general, is a phase. usually babies start to clamp down when they get distracted/lose interest in the breast, so once you see them stop sucking, pull away a little, etc. de-latch them right away before they bite. and try not to react when they bite.

if your LO is as young as your ticker says, she may not be latching correctly. a good latch should not hurt. you might want to talk to a lactation consultant or check this page for more info.

  • I had a biter from the start (and still do but now with teeth). I found that unlatching, repositioning, relatching helps. Make sure your LO feels secure (no hanging arms, legs, or even tilting towards or away from you). If your LO will suck on your finger you may be able to tell more about what's happening and why they are clamping down.

Make sure you break the latch with your finger before unlatching. Good luck!

  • Mine was a biter right away too. He was really gassy and would clamp down whenever he had a gas pain or mad. My LC said I wasnt noticing hunger cues early enough and to feed him before he was awake and that helped a lot. (Hard to do when you are sleeping/exhausted though) Things were going good but now he is 3 Months and teething! I can feel little teeth nubs starting to come in now. Now that is painful! I've been pumping until I recover. What do you do when your baby is teething? How do you still BF?

  • For teething and bfing a biter in the beginning I was dream feeding several times a night. Not perfect but it worked. I found that she truly needed to be hungry during the day when feeding. If she bit me (with her razor blade as I call it) I would unlatch and give her my finger or side of my hand to chew on until she stopped biting. Then attempt to relatch. Plenty of times it didn't work and I gave her Sophie to chew. I just figured the dream feeds would make it up. Now she knows if she bites she gets something else to bite and not milk.

I do supplement (4 oz a day) and pump at times so all of this has helped maintain the bfing relationship through the tough times. Good luck!
