  • I have no time to ready any of these responses, but yes, the health of your baby trumps all.

I'm curious about something. Don't all schools require kids to be up to date on vaccinations before they will admit them? Where I live, vaccinations are mandatory for public school. So for people who choose not to vaccinate, are they planning to home school their kids?

There are entirely too many loophole exemptions in most states and provinces, unfortunately. In some places it is as easy as claiming 'philosophical differences'.
So what should we do once our kids are school age and have to go to school with unvaccinated kids?

We pray to any God listening that people have smartened the fuck up by then.

    AMEN!

I can't stand when parents spit in the face of science/facts and declare war on those who disagree. I vaccinated my DS and when this new baby is here, they too will be vaccinated. I don't even think I can wrap my head around the idea that any kid could get whooping cough, measles, mumps, polio, small pox, etc in this day of age….all because of some semi-political too cool for school mentality. If you choose not to vaccinate, it shouldn't be a surprise that people don't want their immuno-compromised infants/kids to be around your petri-dish of a child.

No, there 3 types of exemptions. In some states only one. They include medical, religious and philosophical.

  • Luckily, by the time kids are in school they have finished up many vaccines and boosters, so it is much better than when our infants are around non-vaxed kids. Still, the more a kid is exposed to a disease, the more likely he will get it, vaxed or not. Bodies can only make so many antibodies at a time, and if you live in one of those pockets, your kid is going to be exposed more often. :-/

  • So I don't know when anti-vax became a thing. Did this come in with gluten free thing? (Ps. Truly sorry for anyone who really does have gluten allergies)

That would be me. Celiac, contributes to infertility and loss.

And honestly - no. It was a thing before gluten-free went mainstream. It's Jenny McCarthy bullshit. And as it turns out, her son is not Autistic, he has a rare brain disorder. So thousands of women followed suit for *gasp* no damn reason.

ETA: she may have actually started the new gf fad herself. She started saying how removing gluten and casein (protein in dairy) can cure autism as it did her son . . .

jalara48:  I'm so sorry to hear that - my cousin has Celiac's and its been tough for her too, especially growing up years ago when there wasn't as much attention to it.

I read that too about JM's son - but I thought she was still trying to maintain it was from vaccinations?  I don't get how she's still banging the drum if this is the case....

  • @jalara48:  Thank you for the info!  I really have been out of the baby loop so all of this stuff I considered standard (vaxs, circumcision and a few other issues) being debated blow my mind.

Not dissing the debates.  I think it is great to hear other sides.

  • I'm totally pro-vax (I'm the one who requires flu shots for PP visits)...but I also follow a Paleo Lifestyle, so I don't eat gluten, grain products with the exception of rice once a week, stay away from processed foods, and I eat (gasp!) only raw dairy cheeses and butters.  While I'm GF by choice, that does not mean I'm eating the craptastic GF breads, cookies, and treats (blech!).  I don't do it because it's trendy, I do it because I'm not bloated, I poop on a regular basis, and my skin doesn't itch.  Following this lifestyle and diet is what finally brought the return of my period (after a 2.5 year absence) and ultimately my son.  My family also bathes coconut oil and castille soap, so while I hope it wasn't the PP's intention to lump everyone together, not all crunchy, cloth diapering, gluten free families are anti-vax.

I believe that our bodies are made to eat an ancestral diet, and we should keep as many chemicals as we can out of our homes and off our bodies, but this does not mean I ignore medical advances and advice.  Often the argument against a Paleo Diet is, but pre-historic man had a life expectancy of like 35 years - yeah, and pre-historic man died from infectious disease, which could be totally eradicated if people wised up!   I have eczema and a family history of arthritis and Alzheimer's disease, so I believe (as do many Dr.'s, read Grain Brain and Wheat Belly) keeping grains, sugar, and other inflammatory foods out of my diet are the best thing for me.  It's just another step, along with vaccinating, keeping un-vaccinated away, and freaking washing your hands, towards keeping myself and my family healthy.
Me: unexplained infertility - annovulatory DH: testicular cancer survivor!! TTC since June 2009 BFP May 11, 2012 EDD January 24, 2013 June 1, 2012 - first u/s, heartbeat 124 BPM!! June 22, 2012 - heard the heartbeat 9w1d 181 BPM!! 24 hours of labor, 4 1/2 hours of pushing, and IT'S A BOY! Welcome to the world my miracle, we prayed and prayed for you, and we can't believe you're here!
  • I just want to say that I love that most of this board is pro-vax. I have lost a friend because she is anti-vax, and I posted ONE article about why I am pro-vax. I will lose more if that's what it takes to keep my kids healthy.
