Allergy question about my 2yo

I know this isn't exactly the right board to be asking this, but just wanted to check if anyone has any ideas..

Our son has allergies. I used to have him on Children's Claritin every day as he showed symptoms, but I haven't used it in months. We are trying to avoid meds with questionable ingredients and go a more natural route. When he spends a day playing outside, the next morning he wakes up with swollen, puffy, red, watery, itchy eyes and sneezing. I do an "allergy bomb" with essential oils (lavender, lemon, and peppermint) on his feet when he shows these symptoms, and also apply 1 drop of lavender diluted in 1 teaspoon of coconut oil around his eyes (I was told this helps for allergy-induced conjunctivitis). Is there anything else I can be doing or giving him? The above remedies don't really seem to be clearing things up.

Re: Allergy question about my 2yo

  • I would consult his pedi, or take him to a naturopathic/homeopathic doctor if you want a more natural route.  They might have better ideas.

That said, local raw honey is supposed to help with allergies because it contains the same stuff that he'd be breathing in, but exposure to it in that form is supposed to help with the reactions.

  • I'm with lily grace and have also hears about the local honey trick.

We use Claritin still but are starting to look into other options also.

  • We are researching a good source of local honey and plan on using it daily once we find one.  Guess we just need to find a good doc here, too.  Thanks :)
  • I've taken Claritin for my allergies from a very early age and meow give it to my 2 yr old when hers start acting up (she got them from me) I understand wanting to be as natural as possible but if his allergies are so bad that he's puffing up then you may have to consider that he made need actual medication to prevent these reactions. Discuss it with a doctor that would prescribe antihistamines then discuss it with a homeopathic doctor and c
  • Compare the benefits and what remedies work I guess. But don't be so against medicine that you deny him what he needs to feel better.
  • The antihistamines our son has been prescribed, whether Children's Claritin, or just generic loratadine, have all contained ingredients that I don't feel are very safe for him to be consuming daily.  That's why I'd like to avoid those.

The only thing "natural" I've tried are the essential oils, so I don't see why I should completely give up on a natural remedy.  That's all I was looking for here were suggestions for other remedies if anyone else has tried them.  And I didn't say the oils don't work at all, I'm just wondering if there's a better natural option.

    Thanks for your input, everyone!
  • You can also bathe him at night after he plays outside. I'm allergic to grass and weeds. It would really help to alleviate the symptoms. Taking allergy medicine did the trick though.

  • I have said it before and I will say it again.....medications were invented for a reason. What are these ingredients that aren't safe, I am curious, my husband is a physican and he nor I have ever heard of any harmful ingredients in these allergy medications. Would love to see the peer reviewed scientific data illustrating the harmful ingredients in common over-the-counter allergy medications.

I am actually allergic to my fetus and I take claritin and zyrtec twice daily and if there are harmful ingredients in them, it is safe to say my child is screwed.

  • If he is waking up a mess the next morning, my first concern is if he is breathing is being compromised during the night because if so this could lead to a whole other realm of problems.

Wash him before bed (especially his hair.) Get him hypoallergenic bedding. Cover his pillow during the day. Don't leave his window open over night (pollen is typically worst in the morning). Get a hepafilter for his room if necessary.

The skins of grapes, apples, and pears are supposed to have something in them to help calm immunoresponse.

If it doesn't get better soon I'd talk to his pedi. Poor kid! Allergies are the pits.

(Since getting KU I stopped my allergy meds, until I stopped sleeping and started waking up to asthma attacks. Now I'm under orders from my midwife to take a Benadryl every night before bed and any time I feel like I need one.)

    Breathing is important!

  • If you have a local swap meet, I would go there in search of a beekeeper that sells LOCAL honey. The kind you buy at a grocery store won't cut it. A beekeeper typically sells a blend that is specific for allergies.

  • Ops reasoning notwithstanding, that thread actually had some of the most well reasoned anti-vax discussions I've ever read. I still don't agree and will vaccinate my kids as scheduled, but it was an interesting read.

You laugh, and I agree, but I use a homeopathic rememdy called Arsenicum Album for my anxiety that works like a fucking charm.  Apparently it's divided up enough that none of the actual aresenic nasties are in there, so it's safe, but who knows.  All I know is, whether it really works or it's a placebo affect, it can stop a panic attack in its tracks!

That said, I have already talked to my OB about what's safe to take for anxiety during pregnancy/nursing, because while I have no problem putting that in my body, I don't know how it might affect a fetus/infant, so I'd like something that's actually been tested for that sort of thing before I pass it along to my child!

If it works great! I was just saying that there are a lot of natural things that are bad for you and that the natural route isn't always the best. I doubt what you take has any arsenic in it otherwise it would be harmful to you and your baby.

I am team Claritin for sure!
