Anotherdreamer-My MFM and OB both said that I would be on lovenox postpartum for at least 6 weeks after delivery. So that is definitely the plan for me as well. I imagine I will be watched closely while I am in labor for signs of blood clots and be monitored closely so they can catch anything. It's just a worry I have for probably no reason .
Switched to heparin today (32 weeks di/di twin girls)...guess that means these babies have a birthday coming soon! How is everyone else feeling out there?
Hey ladies (Sorry, this may be a bit of a rant) I was my obgyn today and wanted to get your opinion on something.
The clinic that I go through has several doctors all working for them, so each week there is a different doctor at the clinic. Today I saw a new doctor whom I have never met before, and she starts saying that she wants to switch me to heparin but she's not entirely sure because she hasn't read my chart fully yet. She goes on to tell me that if I stay on lovenox up until delivery, I have a high chance of hemorrhaging. When I express my concern about not being kept in the loop about my labour plan, she kind of laughs it off and says she wants to look my case over fully and that she will call me. My first concern is that she mentioned switching my medication without even being fully submerged with my case. And my second one is that I feel that my concerns and anxiety are not being addressed when I try to talk about them.
What would you ladies do in this situation? I don't know if I should look for another obgyn to handle the rest of my pregnancy? I would really like to deal with one person, who is fully aware of my case.(DVT) I am 35 weeks, so I'm not sure if it's too late. Also, ladies who have delivered before and were on lovenox/heparin, how did it go for you?
I'm sorry if any of these questions sound ignorant, I am just very scared and not really sure where to go from here.
Are you just seeing an obgyn? Not a high risk ob? I would probably look for a second opinion. I would be scared if my doctor wanted to change meds without knowing everything first.
I have not gone through labor yet but I am on lovanox and my MFM is keeping me on it. She says it is just a matter of timing and heparin can be hard to get the right dose for some people.
@AnotherDreamer That's what I was thinking! I should have a primary physician taking care of my case. When I asked the obgyn that yesterday she said she needed to look into my case more before answering that question. I am just going to get a second opinion, regardless of what they say. At least for my own piece of mind.
Ylvelill I am just seeing an obgyn, not a high risk, which I also thought was strange. Because I have medicaid, which obviously isn't the best insurance, my options tend to be limited for obgyns in the area. The clinic that I go to is specifically for medicaid patients, which I suspect is why I feel like I'm not getting the best medical treatment or advice.
Thank you both for your input, I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this was not handled the best way.
@auroraborealis6626 - This has been my experience. It seems like a normal protocol to switch to heparin as you near due date (for me, carrying multiples, that means 32 weeks). they do this for several reasons, one of which is that the heparin is easily controlled in a hospital setting (should too much bleeding occur) and only lasts for 12 hours in your body (hence having to do 2 injections/day). I actually saw a hematologist before getting pregnant but after being diagnosed with Factor V Leiden. I did this because I was given mixed information on the best way to proceed in a high-risk pregnancy. I had some people telling me I wouldn't need blood thinners until my third trimester and others telling me something different. I also opted to see a high-risk OB, who knows my history of PE and has been great to work with. I see him at every appointment, though sometimes it is only for a few minutes and spend more time with nurses, in ultrasound clinic, or with the midwife. I also asked him during my second trimester if he would be the doctor to deliver the babies. He has promised me and my husband that he indeed will be there for the birth of our twins. If you are not happy with your care, feel empowered to choose a place/doctor/practice that better fits what you need. My doctor takes a lot of worry off of my shoulders. For that I am grateful. Hope this helps!
That's it, I am switching pharmacy. I go to pick up my lovanox, which I called in Sunday even though it is supposed to auto fill. I go to pick it up and get a song and dance about why they had to give me just 3 because they were out. I asked why they were out when they knew I needed it and the explanation I got was "if someone comes in who needs it, then we sell it to them even though we pre ordered it for you".....
@Ylvelill - I don't get the Lovenox shortage lately. Same thing happened to me, but I had to go to a different pharmacy to pick up 3 shots and then drive back on Monday for the rest of my prescription. Pain in the butt. The heparin was a funny story - they basically told me I should have filled it at the hospital pharamcy. My reply, "I don't like to use that pharmacy because it is 45 minutes from home. I would prefere having it filled here." Their reply, "We don't have heparin." Me just staring...Then finally they fessed up that they could order it in for me. Well, yes. Do that! You are a pharmacy aren't you? Argh...
I'm also having a "pharmacy" issue! As of January of this year, any prescriptions over 21 days have to be ordered through a mail order pharmacy and delivered to my home. I've had scrips shipped to me before using this company. Well, on May 1st, we're switching to a different mail order company and lo and behold, NOW the current one is giving me all sorts of problems. They told me they got the wrong script from the dr so the dr called to place the order again. Well, when HE was on the phone, they told him they have the right script but that my insurance is outdated and therefore these shots aren't covered. I have 8 shots left and no end of the mess in sight. UGH! X( On top of all that, I just got a call from my dr cancelling my first ultrasound this evening because the tech is sick. I understand people get sick and I'm glad I'm not around her but man, I'm so disappointed today
Hi, I'm new here, got my bfp just under a week ago. Today my doc has ordered me to start lovenox and I've been taking aspirin due to clotting factor. I know nothing about lovenox so I googled it with pregnancy. Oh my goodness, all the posts that came up were negative and blaming lovenox for things like ADHD and PDD diagnoses in their children. I'm kinda freaked out. Has anyone here been on lovenox before without issues for baby?
@Ihope - I think the response you will get from most people in this thread is that the benefits outweigh the risks. Speaking for myself - someone who has already had a near death experience because of my clotthing factor - I much prefer knowing I am doing everything I can to stay healthy and alive for my babies. Talk to your doc some more if you are concerned and maybe see a hematologist as well.
@Ihope - Welcome! I second everything that @BeesKnees181 said. Also, try to remember that correlation does not necessarily equal causation. Lately, if you look up any medication, someone is going to be blaming that medication for causing ADD/ADHD/autism/on and on and on.
@Ylvelill - I really hope your pharmacy gets everything straightened out; I'd be livid if they just up and gave away my rx to someone else.
Has anyone who has switched to Heparin found that your Heparin injection sites bleed more than your Lovenox injection sites did? Maybe I just hit a couple good bleeders in a row by chance right after switching.
@megmegs - Boy did I have a good bleeder this morning! It was my first bleeder since switching to heparin, and it was something. I am digging the smaller needles I am using for heparin, though. I get less burning and pain with the injections compared to the pre-filled Lovenox syringes.
How'd it go? It's a lot less intimidating after you get the first one out of the way, isn't it?
Just took my second shot now. Not sure if I've grown a tolerance to needles through my infertility journey but it really does not bother me at all (so far). I do have some bruising from last nights injection site though.
Has an appointment with my hematologist this morning and mentioned the fact that a nurse from his office told me I can ONLY use my belly. He made sure to speak with the woman that told me that because he told me giving myself shots in my thighs is perfectly fine. SO glad I can finally change it up a little bit. He always showed me a new way of injecting myself which will hopefully help with the bruising. Hope everyone is healthy and happy!
So glad that the needles we use are not the length or width of what was used to administer a steroid shot to me yesterday (for baby lung development). That sucker was downright scary and should only be used on large mammals - like horses and zebras.
Has anyone on here with an active dvt been told that they need to be induced on or before your due date due to increased risk from the dvt? My OB is pushing to schedule an induction on my due date, and I can't tell if it's really because of an increased risk or because she's a big proponent of inductions.

Aww sorry you had to have one of those shots. I got one last week, those needles are not for sissies!
@megmegs My MFM has mentioned inducing me about a week early. I'm not entirely sure of the reasoning though. I have an active dvt as well. From what I understand, they want to take me off of the blood thinners before I go into labour and then put me back on them 12 hours after I have LO. This is the only reason I could think of having an induction; they want to be able to plan when I have the baby so I can be off the blood thinners in time. I'm definitely going to get a clear answer at my next appointment though, as my due date is sneaking up on me! Good Luck!!

My hematologist said that he wants to put me on heparin about weeks 35-37 to ensure that I can get an epidural for delivery. My OB said that she wants to keep me on lovenox and just schedule being induced, therefore giving me time to get off the lovenox in time. I didn't ask either of them much about it because I was still early (prior to 8 weeks) and I didn't want to get ahead of myself. I'll most likely ask each of them at my next appt even though I'll only be 12 weeks. I want to prepare myself
I am having a c section, my ob is not a fan of induction early, plus with twins I would most likely end up having a c section for the second one anyway.
Hi ladies! I haven't been on here at all since I had my baby girl! But I wanted to share my birth story with you all It wasn't what I had planned, but i my girl is here and she is amazing!
I am so excited to announce the birth of my beautiful daughter, Molly Denise!
After a very scary pregnancy (Preterm labor at 27 weeks, full bed rest, and a blood clot), I can relax with my baby girl. She is amazing. 7 lbs 7 oz 21.5 inches long born vaginally med-free.
My birth story:
All day on Thursday I started to feel a little weird but didn't get my hopes up. I had a scheduled induction for Sunday so I just figured that's when she will be born! Baby girl didn't want to wait! I woke up early Friday morning with contractions. I realized they were already 3 minutes apart, so I woke DH and rushed to the hospital (we have a 45 minute drive). When we got there all the birthing rooms were full so I had to wait in the hallway for a room. At this time, my contractions were 2 minutes apart.
When I finally got into the room, my doctor came in and checked me. I was 3 cm dilated and 80% effaced. I was a little bit discouraged when I was told I was a 3 especially because my contractions were every 2 minutes. I am on blood thinners because of the blood clot, so I had to see what my blood levels were before I could get the epi. I was told that it would be fine if I was off my meds for 6 hours and I was, so I was happy about that. Little did I know, my blood levels were over double the amount it could be for the epi. I was very upset. My contractions continued at 2 minutes apart for 14 hours with no epidural. When I got an extreme urge to push, I was only an 8. I couldn't help myself from pushing with each contraction so I pushed on my own because I couldn't control it for 2 hours. It was a nightmare. I begged for medication or any sort but they couldn't give it to me. When the dr came back to check me I was fully dilated and was finally "allowed" to push. I pushed for 30 minutes and my little lady came out head and hands at the same time (compound). I was able to have skin to skin with her right away. She is amazing and breastfed right away!
alohamel - Congratulations! Thank you for sharing your birth story! Looking back now, how do you feel about it being a med-free birth? Any insights on working through the pain without an epi?
@MK1013 - Welcome! Try not to worry. I am hetero Factor V too, and have been treated my whole pregnancy with blood thinners. But take that wit ha grain of salt because I also have a history of pulmonary embolism. My mother is also hetero Factor V and she had both my sister and I without knowing / not being on blood thinners and her pregnancies and births were just fine.
Ylvelill is right...the bruising is the worst part! I am running out of unbruised space. We are all ok with our treatments and know it is all meant to keep us and babies safe.
@MK1013 I, too, have Factor V...silly me doesn't remember if it's hetero or not I was diagnosed after my first blood clot in 2011. I ended up with another clot in December of 2013 and was immediately taken off birth control.
This is my second pregnancy (first ended in a miscarriage which was before I knew about the Factor V and blood thinners). I've been nervous about doing the shots as well but I have heard nothing but positive stories.
My baby girls arrived May 1st! I had a vaginal delivery. Marlo Gail weighed in at 4 lbs. 9 oz. & 18.5 inches long. Her sister, Daphne Grey, was born 8 minutes later. Daphne weighed 4 lbs. 11 oz. & 18.5 inches long. Both girls came home with me. I am so grateful.

@AmandaRae529
I suck at filling syringes...they always come out completely bent. (Thank goodness hubby is better at it than I am.)

It is scary but the good news is that most of us don't end up having any issues aside from the darn bruises from injections!
Good luck with the baby.
