@flojo973 - I asked my MW about this yesterday at my appointment and she told me that they generally don't do a cervical check until I'm in L&D and looking to have the baby. So it's obviously not a requirement for a healthy pregnancy or delivery before labor starts. I had intended to refuse them anyway (I've read too many stories about it hurting unnecessarily), so luckily it's a moot point!
@MrsRahl - go wood! IMHO wood is the best look and you can always put down a throw rug or two to mute noise.
@joules235 - thanks! What about cervical checks at 36 weeks? This is the one I'm considering declining as I haven't heard a good reason to get one done then. I'm doing Hypnobabies and of course I can't remember what their stance of this is.
@pepper6 I've also heard that family history is a good indicator (and in my case that would be awesome, because there haven't been complications)... BUT if you were born 30 years ago, things have changed. For example, my brother was supposedly premature and weighed 7 pounds. My thought is that my mom just didn't have her due date right. One of my aunts also went into labor early (cousin is 26) and he was 10 pounds, so same thing. Neither of them had USs at that time. Also, a pre-existing condition could be genetic and thus have an impact on L&D. Or they might have changed what they do in the past 10 years.
I'm going to regret asking this (because it makes me queasy just thinking about it for some reason) but if anyone has had their membranes stripped, was it as awful as everyone says? I don't even really know what goes into the process, and I'm too scared to Google, but would like to know from first hand experience if it's something I should be losing sleep over (which I am, currently). Thanks.
I had mine stripped at 41 weeks. For me it was just a rough cervical check. I was a little sore after but nothing major. I was at the hospital to be induced and the induction techniques (foley ballon) was not able to be done. My dr stripped my membranes and I went into active labor maybe 2 hrs later. My water was broken after I got an epidural. I didn't have any discomfort from this. It was a pretty gross feeling with all the fluid coming out but besides that..not bad

i didn't have my membranes stripped but I did have my water broken with the little plastic hook. for the love of god don't let them do that to you unless it's necessary. it may have been because I wasn't effaced at all and dilated only 1.5 cm so they had to go really far back and it was hard to get through my cervix but holy hell.
I had my membranes stripped and my water broken with DS and neither were too bad. Cervical checks don't hurt at all for me, they just feel like pressure. Having my membranes swept was like an intense cervical check, more pressure, but no pain. Having my water broken was definately the worst of the three. It made me a little squirmy and I had to really focus to relax during it, but really it wasn't that bad.

I'm hoping my labor goes like my mom's and sister's. None of them went overdue (my mom was closest with me and I was born on my EDD), all pretty quick labors (longest was around 12 hrs total), short push times, minimal to no tearing, smaller babies, etc.
Dr. said today that I was measuring right on track, but that she is definitely not a big baby...so hopefully some of those will follow suit.
Odd question: Has any STM drunk wine during early labor? Had a funny convo w the midwife today about that. I was asking about pain management tools between natural and epidural. She says they often recommend wine @ home to help relax you.
She also said narcotics in IV are also ok early on, to take the edge off. Anyone have luck with that?
A side note: apparently some places (not my hospital) use laughing gas... Sounds so old-fashioned to me, but, I can't lie, TOTALLY appealing. Haha.
This is totally normal in Europe and it's catching on in the US. I've been telling my MW for months that if our hospital wants to start a trial - sign me up!
@pepper6 I was curious about this too so I asked my doctor about it today... She said that family history can be more indicative of how a pregnancy could go, but doesn't really mean much when it comes to actual labor and delivery.
so laundry detergent...I know that for CD, you need one that won't leave a residue on the dipes or cause any reactions, but do I need to use a similar one for clothes as well? or just find an all and clear that works? also, is liquid or powder better? currently DH and I use a homemade powder, but since it has fabric softener (Purex crystals) and Borax, we are planning on figuring out something else before LO gets here.
I wish this was true for me!! My Mom was pregnant Barbie who had heartburn one time during one pregnancy and literally zero other symptoms. She also lost the baby weight super fast and gained weight only in her belly and boobs. She literally wore pre-pregnancy jeans the whole time, just unbuttoned at the top...bitch...
lol, I'm in the same boat so far... nothing like my mom's pregnancies, and not in the good way. I was more glad that she said it didn't mean much for labor and delivery because she had some rough labors.

I'm an original tide powder kinda gal myself for laundry. I don't CD yet but I have heard that people either love it or hate it for CDs so I plan on using it for that too unless it sucks at which time I'll find something else I guess. just don't fall into the trap of special detergent for baby clothes (ie Dreft)... it's not necessary to have different detergent for baby clothes and adult clothes.
How fast can your rib cage expand? Because all of the sudden, I am in so much pain around where my bra sits.
Not sure but I bought bra extenders. It's been a lifesaver!!! Now I don't have to walk around with my bra unhooked. You can find them at target or walmart.

All of this... except I used Tide Original Powder for the three-ish years we CD'd M, and I never had to strip.
What makes a nursing tank a nursing tank? Is it just the clip down? If I had tank tops that were low cut and I could just pop my boob out, would that work just as well? I'm finding nursing tanks hard to find here, and expensive online. If I can just whip my boob out of any old tank then I'm good to go.
Yeah, pretty much the clip that makes it easy to nurse without exposing too much skin. Anything with a cross front too makes nursing easier. Like this:
@Temurlang1 for me, I get really achey in my back around where my bra is and it's just painful in the front. I'm going to buy extenders and I think that will help.
I'm to lazy to quote. FTM...had a cervical check a couple of weeks ago when they checked for preterm labor! It was a bitch and hurt like hell!!! I'm dreading having to have it done again
What temperature do you wash clothes/sheets on before the baby is born? I was going to start prepping things this and next weekend and it occurred to me I would have thought "hot" but I don't want to shrink everything. Do baby clothes shirnk?

I do hot for the first go around. I didn't notice any shrinkage. However, just don't mix the colors and whites in case any red or dark blue dyes run.

Right after DS was born I decided to wash all of his clothes (hadn't done it yet) and I accidentally put a red sock in there. All of his clothes turned pink. Pepto Bismol, bubblegum pink. I sat on the floor and cried. But then I discovered the power of OxyClean (BILLY MAYS HERE) so if this does happen, soak it in the sink with OxyClean and all will be well! And this goes for poop, too. Not that I wash my clothes with poop. Anymore.
