Rant: DH and the Child Support Shaft

DH's daughter (14) lives with us, his son (10) lives with the ex, but that doesn't make child support a wash in Texas. So on top of the near $600 per month he was already paying for him before, the ex got another $250 out of him. It's just a little disheartening to watch this happen when: She is unemployed. She is constantly getting new phones/gadgets. She is on her second NEW car in the last 4 years. Their house is a nasty mess. We pay for their insurance coverage. We have our own baby/daycare and hospital expenses just around the bend. I understand making ends meet for your kid, but how about stop fucking everyone else and do something productive.

    My brothers ex wife is exactly the same way. She always complains about the kids driving her crazy and not being able to handle them, but whenever he mentions wanting to have them move in with him full time she freaks because her child support check would get cut. Each month he pays 900 in child support, all extracurriular activities, school lunch, gives them both cash to spend however they please, has saving accounts set up for both, and pays for all medical expenses. The kids are both constantly living off of junk food, unclean, and wearing the rattiest clothes. About three times a year I take each one shopping individually to make sure that they have season appropriate clothing that fit them, using my brothers card. She is always wearing top brand clothes, designer shoes, nails and hair professionaly done. 3

    I have nothing against child support - I know there are tons of mothers and fathers who are using the money in order to make the lives of their children better. I do believe that there is abuse of the system by some who just see the $$$ signs and don't use it for their children.

    Ugh I'm sorry you're dealing with that. I agree with PP - I think parents should pay child support. But make sure it gets spent ON THE CHILD.
