Girl name opinion

We don't know what we're having yet, but my DH is set on the name Nora/Norah for a girl. I'm just "ok" with it and not 100% sold on it - more like 80%. I'm more into names that are old, but you don't hear often.

What do you guys think of that name? I'm desperately trying to convince him to go another way :)

Re: Girl name opinion

  • Do you have any other girl name contenders that you prefer? Nora(h) is cute IMO. It's not on our list right now, but I really like it.

  • I love it! I prefer Nora (without the H) but that's just my thoughts on it.

  • Very cute, I like Nora a lot (Norah is ok, but I think it looks prettier and is more traditional without the "H"). That being said, you need to love the name. It is your child! So while a lot of people here like it, if its not your style, keep looking!

  • I like the name Nora. I feel like everyone named Nora is super cute and sweet.
  • I actually really like it! I've never met a Nora(h) in my life. :)
  • I like Nora alot, don't care for the h. I do think it is one of the up and coming names this year though.

  • I like it, but I'm one who prefers the h. That being said, if you don't like it, then forget it. DH will have to get over it and find something you both like.

  • I love the name Nora too! I know one and she is absolutely the sweetest and most bubbly person ever. She is now in her mid 20s and if I remember correctly, she is s a music teacher for elementary school kids

  • I absolutely love it. If we have a girl, we're naming her Eleanor, but will likely end up calling her Nora.

  • I really like the name Norah. I think the classic spelling of it is Norah. Seeing it without the H bothers me for some reason lol.

  • I'm not a big fan of Nora, but what about Cora? Really similar, but Cora makes me think 1920s.
  • Norah is our current girl name contender I really don't like it without the h though. Just looks unfinished to me.

  • I love it but it is VERY trendy, at least in my area. Also, you should pick a name you love instead of one you're just ok with, if possible :)

  • Being middle eastern the name Nora and Noor are used to death. I think I know over 10 Nora's, but that's my community, idk how common it is in other walks of life. It's pretty, but I'm personally Im over it.

I really like the name without the h. I'm surprised to hear its a common name now? I've never met a Nora.

  • I love Nora no h its adorable. I think the h makes it look older, like I think of an old woman's name.
  • I probably won't be much help here. Its a cute name but 100% not my style. I wouldn't use it; however, I wouldn't side eye the name either if I saw someone else use it.

  • I have a friend with a 5 yo named Nora. It's nms, but it's fitting on her. I like that it'll still work when she's an adult (vs the cutsie baby names that don't translate well into adulthood).

With DD, I admit I never loved her name (but liked well enough), but it was a name that DH LOVED... I don't regret letting him pick. And I get to name this one (within reason). :)

  • I don't love it, but if you like older, traditional sounding names, it actually strikes me as one of those names. In my area it isn't so popular so I don't think of it as trendy.

    I liked a PP's suggestion of Cora.
  • I love it, but if you don't then it's time to scrap it and move on.

  • I like it. It's not a name I'd pick, but if someone close to me told me they were naming their daughter Nora, I'd think "Oh, cute!"

  • @swayda‌ I pm'ed you. I accidently wrote on your wall instead of this thread. I hit the wrong thing on my phone. I don't think things on walls can be deleted. I am sorry.

I do like the name Norah.

  • I like what a few other people suggested.  If you like an older name comprimise with your DH and name the baby Eleanor so you get your older traditional name and he gets the nick name Nora :-)

I also like Cora like one of the others suggested.

Eleanor was on my list, but DH hates it.

  • I dont like it. I have a bad habit of associating with people I know or have known. I know a Nora and she wasnt what I would want my daughter to be. Eleanor I like. I too like the old classy names. I agree with the person who said if one if you dont like it then trash it and try to find one that both of you like. Thats what we did and we finally found it.
  • Thanks for your opinions everyone!  I don't hate it, I'm just not sold on it.  Some other names I like are Maeve, Mabel, and Maren.  (I like names in the middle of the alphabet...LoL)

I agree with PP saying that it'll translate well into adulthood.  That's my biggest concern.  I don't want something that ends in the "ee" sound and I don't like names that are too overly girly.  I want something strong and sophisticated!  :)

We'll see.  Maybe I just need to get used to the idea.  Again...we don't know that it's a girl yet, but we've already got our boy name ready to go.  We'll see come May 2nd!

I like it without the "h" and as a nickname for Eleanor. But my opinion really doesn't matter :)

I'm going to be the odd one out here and say that I don't think you both have to be 100% on the name. You both have to not hate it, and at least one of you should LOVE it but really you've gotta work to compromise. I'd say 80% is good. As Mermz said give it some time to grow on you, you've got at least 20 weeks until you have to decide :)

Also I LOVE Maeve and Mabel. Eleanor Mae would be super effing cute IMO. Nora Mae.... gah! So adorable!

ETA: I'm not trying to imply that you are unwilling to compromise.
  • I love the name Nora/Norah, but it's definitely gaining popularity.
  • LOVE the name Nora!  I'm going with Zoey even though it's like #12 or so down on my list, because it's simply the ONLY name my husband and I don't both hate.  So even though I'm not totally in love with the name we chose, it's more important to me that the DH and I are both on board with it.
Baby Zoey arrives Sep 14 2014!
