Pregnant after a Loss

Question for PCOS Metformin users

Hi all,

I have PCOS and have been on 1000 mg of Metformin throughout TTC and my first trimester. I have now reached 12 1/2 weeks (yay) and my doctor says I can stop taking the Metformin now. I am really nervous about this because I feel like it has been my miracle drug that helped me get pregnant and maybe even prevented another MC. I have been doing some reading and I saw there is a study that shows taking it throughout your whole pregnancy reduces risk of pre-term labor. I called my doctor to ask her again and she said that was not valid and they did not recommend any of their patients take it after 12 weeks. I really don't want to stop taking it though, but I guess I should do what she says. I was hoping to get some insight from other PCOS ladies- what have your doctor's told you  to do about Metformin? Thanks for the help!!

  • I also take 1000mg a day. I am still on it and will continue until after the birth of my son. Each case of PCOS is different and different approaches from different doctors.
  • I also have PCOS and take 1250 mg of metformin daily. I absolutely understand your anxiety. My RE stopped by Metformin with my first pregnancy at 6 weeks and we had our loss at 8 weeks. It was probably completely unrelated but stuck in my head for sure. My RE recommended I continue through the first trimester and then let my OB determine the next step. My OB saw no reason to stop the Metformin throughout pregnancy. She may have me stop for a week prior to my GD testing. I think every doctor is different and ultimately no one really knows because there is not enough really good validated research to show that one way is better than another. I know all the conflicting information is confusing and scary! I'm sorry!
