Baby's Current Weight

My obstetrician did an ultrasound and took a vaginal swipe to test for Strep B today. Based on my baby's head size, she's apparently 6lbs 11oz today and will be close to 9lbs at delivery. My sister and I were both 9lbs 8oz at birth (two years apart, but same exact weight), so I always figured that was normal. But lately I'd been hearing 7lbs is closer to normal. So . . . this is gonna be quite the painful delivery, I guess.

Anyone else know the expected weight of their baby yet?

Re: Baby's Current Weight

  • Meh 9 pounds is on the larger side of normal but remember normal is a range. My guy was estimated at 7# last Tuesday at 34w3d. No speculation on his total weight. Lots of STMs on here have said that the weight estimate was total crap for their kid so take it with a grain of salt.

  • Again, ultrasounds are not the tell all. They predicted DD1 would be an 8lb baby when born at 40 weeks... she was born at 38w2d and weighed 8lbs1oz. Baby will come when baby comes, and will be the size baby is meant to be. That's about as much prediction as there is surrounding size and timing of delivery.

  • also keep in mind that size doesn't always dictate how difficult or painful a delivery is!  I've heard numerous people say that their bigger babies were easier deliveries than their "average" sized babies.

  • At my US today, they said baby is 5 pounds and I am 33 weeks. If baby gains 1/2 a pound a week like he should, it looks like he will be around 8 pounds. The paper with his weight also said +/- 12 oz so that must be the margin of error, which is a lot.
  • My LO was guesstimated at 5 lb 7 oz at 33 weeks. My doctor thinks he'll be about 8-9 pounds and was perfectly comfortable with that.

  • This LO is measuring to be 9ish lbs around EDD, however those estimates can easily be off. A friend was told her LO would be 9 lbs and he was 7 something.....

DD however was an almost 9 lb baby delivered at 39 weeks, so I think we just make big babies. She also had a big head. FWIW, I had no issues delivering her and didn't even have a single tear :D

and she followed the OWT  for big babies and started sleeping through the night at 5 weeks!

  • Like PP mentioned, ultrasounds are not always accurate.  I was told to keep my FX that DS would be 5lbs when he was born at 36w6d - he was 7lbs.  With that being said, at my last appt (I was 32w) they were guessing DS2 is 4lb 5oz.

  • They told me last week when I was 32 weeks that baby is estimated to be 4lbs 4oz based on my ultrasound. This was the 46th or 49th percentile. I can't remember which. Either way they said average babies in that percentile are about 7lbs and some ounces. I think 8lbs is still in higher normal range but that mid-percentile is like 7 1/2-ish based on my understanding.

  • At 35w4d, my growth scan ultrasound estimated that baby is 6 lb 10 oz.

  • No idea on baby weight--but I have given birth to a 7#3oz baby and a 8#12oz baby and the pain was the same:). Bigger baby does not mean more painful.
  • At 34w my baby was weighing in at 6lbs. I have GD and she apparently takes after her father's gigantor side of the family. I agree that these are "guesstimates" so I was going to take it with a grain of salt. My H asked the tech (who has been there for 15 years) how accurate that number really was and she replied, "Well, it's usually within 1-2lbs of the baby's actual weight. Myself, though, I am always within 1/2lb of the actual weight. I've only been off once, and that was by 2lbs." So there's that.
  • The 10th percentile is 5.5 pounds at 40 weeks. The 90th percentile is 9.5 pounds at 40 weeks. 7.5 is the middle.

Ultrasounds can be off +-1 pound one way or the other although I have anecdotally heard of them being off even more.

At 33 weeks 2 days, my LO was measuring 4 pounds 14 ounces and was measuring 33 weeks 4 days -- so pretty well on track...

  • I had my growth u/s last Friday at 34w2d and he was measuring at 34w5d and estimated to weigh about 5.5 lbs.  They said he would likely be between 7-8 when born.  I know they can be off, but I am staying hopeful that will be his size, since I was an over 9 lb baby and was scared of having a big baby! :-p
  • I've always wondered why they don't give you estimated weight and length. I was 7lbs 1 oz at birth but 21", my sister was the same weight but only 18", makes a big difference in how the baby is shaped I was long and lean, my sister was shorter and a little thicker.

  • My doc hasn't guess and I haven't been too interested, hence why I haven't asked. If they were concerned with him being small or large they would have said something. But for now, I'd rather not think about how big he will be when he makes his way out my vagina. That is if everything goes well.

  • At 31 weeks, baby was estimated to be 4 lbs., 6 oz., which I was told was the 50th percentile.
  • I just had my 36 wk sonogram and baby is measuring 5.5lb. Doctor estimated that she would be around 7lb at birth, definitely a bit of relief considering DH was 9lb10oz.

Just saw my MFM today and she is 5#8oz at 34 weeks with super long arms and legs! ETA: no guessing I have u/s twice a week due to being high risk (lupus/PIH) and today was a growth scan. Although there is a margin of error that gets larger as you get closer to delivering

  • With DS, he was estimated as 5-5.5 lbs at 35 weeks. He was born 10 days later at 5-13. Curious to see how Little Sis is measuring.

  • A lot of you have drs guessing weight. Are you guys having ultrasounds this far along? My last one was at 20 weeks and I don't get anymore. I also have never had my dr mention anything about the size of my baby.

Mine was vía u/s. Im high risk (GD) and they are keeping a close eye on her size.

Most of these estimates sound like they are vía u/s. Weights are just estimates, they measure the head, torso and femur and estimate from there...there is a big margin of error.

I have been having issues with my kidneys and they wanted to make sure it wasn't messing up fluid levels. If I didn't have this I would have only had 1 ultrasound at 20 weeks. That is the norm if you are not having issues
  • Just "graduated" from my perinatal specialist at 32 weeks. According to him, I might have another u/s at the OB, but it's not a guarantee.

At 32 weeks, LO was 4 lbs, 4 oz (I think that was her oz weight), 63rd percentile.
  • I'm glad I have no idea his size. I've had an 8+ Pounder and a 9+ pounder. Both are painful, so I would agree with a pp that size does not dictate pain it hurts no matter what. Just keep in mind those scans are not 100% there is at least a lb margin of error.
  • A lot of you have drs guessing weight. Are you guys having ultrasounds this far along? My last one was at 20 weeks and I don't get anymore. I also have never had my dr mention anything about the size of my baby.

Passed GTT and not high risk here, but I've been getting growth scans because at my 28w appointment, my fundal measurement was 34w, then at my 30w appointment, we did an u/s and DD2 was measuring a couple weeks ahead, and I had a high fluid level. U/s at 33w6d had DD2 measuring at 35w6d to 37w5d, and my fluid was back in a normal range. Dr said she was in the 98th percentile after that u/s, weighing in at 6lbs 4oz. That will be our last u/s.

  • They gave me an estimated weight of 6lbs 9oz at 33w5d and now my doctor is saying we'll probably induce at 38 weeks so I have a chance at a vaginal delivery. I wish I'd go before then on my own. I'm nervous about induction but evidently the hospital I'm delivering at forces a C section if they have any inclination that baby will be above 10#s.
  • Okay. What you guys are saying makes sense then. Wasn't sure if it was strange that I hadn't heard about my baby's size. I thought it was normal to not have another ultrasound, but just checking.
  • I had to get mine because my belly is measuring over 6 weeks ahead and they were concerned about fluid/giant baby. They are still concerned over his size so I get to go back today and Thursday.
  • My first DD was born at 40w4d and weighed 10.6. I am 34weeks with #2 and the last ultrasound I had at 32 weeks had her at about 6 pounds. My dr is watching me but said to expect another big baby. I already have the C-section scheduled for 39 weeks. He also scheduled me for another ultrasound this week because he thinks I look much bigger than 2 weeks ago...I guess we will see Thursday.
  • Because I'm on insulin my OB has me going in every week to check on LO's weight. As of yesterday at 35 weeks DD was 6lbs 1oz.
  • I had my 34 week check-up today and baby boy is measuring 37+ weeks and his estimated weight is 6 lbs 2 oz. My doctor said if he stays on track and I make it to 40 weeks then he will be born at over 9 lbs. Unfortuantely that's totally in line with how big my siblings and I were, but it terrifies me being a FTM. He also isn't considering induction because he said they encourage first timer's to try to go into labor naturally. Which makes sense, but my brother got stuck in the birth canal and they had to use forceps to get him out so I'm a little worried about having a chunk!

At a 34 week scan my son was estimated to be 6lb something... don't remember. They told me he would be 9.5 to 10 pounds at 40 weeks. It was accurate - He was born 9lb5oz at 39 weeks.

This one, with the same tech was estimated at 7lb9oz at 34 week scan....
