You can come to my house and do a garden for me. I want one, but I am the garden killer. I can't keep plants alive, they come to me to die. I promised DS that we would try a garden this year. I hope I don't mess it up too much. He wants potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries, carrots, beans. I would line to add some peppers to his list. I'm going to get stuff this weekend.
I never thought about straw! I always weed things that are good and leave the weeds. I can't tell the difference. I need to get one if those claw looking things to get the soil ready. I'll also tell DH to do that. If I bug him enough he might.
I wish we had time to garden but we've been in our house for 3 years and still don't have the backyard landscaped at all. We did spend the weekend putting in the irrigation system for the front yard and planting a boxwood hedge on the property line to keep the neighbor kids out of our yard. Wish it would work on their d**n dog though. I picked up poo this weekend as well and I swear, there was more chihuahua poo (theirs) than heeler poo (ours) in my fenced backyard. We figured out their little rat dog has been digging under the fence from his kennel to our back yard and just comes & goes as he pleases. Explains the barking complaints about our dog (who barks when he plays).
We're doing a complete yard reno this year. SO let the yard go to waste and now it's just this useless ugly weed haven. So, we're making it more manageable for us. I was hoping to stick a few raised beds in this year, but we won't be bale to. Instead I'm going to have my SFIL come over to help build a few planting boxes on legs and then get some big ole pots to container garden. Next year I'll have the whole shebang up hopefully!
We are moving so we get to start a brand new garden/yard. The yard at the new house has absolutely no grass in the front b/c the owners didn't do anything with the leaves that fell (there are a lot of trees on the property) and it killed all the grass. That's the first order of business. There are several flower beds as well, but those were a little better maintained, so we'll wait and see what grows and then plant/removed stuff in the fall and next spring (maybe a little this summer, depending on $$). There is also another place or two we want to start a new bed (I'd like an herb/veggie garden like I had last year) but once again that depends on $$ and time.
