How many Easter eggs to hide?

I am starting to get ready for Easter and filling the eggs. How many eggs would you hide for a almost 3 year old? Do you let them open them as they find them or open them all at once after they are found? So far they are pretty boring but I plan on doing some fun ones as well. So far I have 22 eggs: 15 of socks and 6 of duplo blocks. Ds is going to hate the Easter bunny for being so logical. haha I also plan on doing coins, goldfish, taped eggs as rattles and Hersey kisses.

His basket has 6 books, 2 puzzles, a bag of raisins, bubbles and some kind of chocolate will be added into the basket I think.

So how many eggs do you think I should do? I don't want to do so many that he gets bored and they don't all get found. We didn't do egg hunts when I was a kid so I am a newbie to this!

I hide approximately a dozen per kid. I let them open their eggs when they want, usually it is immediately after the hunt.

My kids LOVE hunting eggs. I'll probably do close to 100 for the 2 of them. No clue yet what I'm putting in them. Really trying to avoid candy at all this year. For DD1s birthday, the Easter bunny comes back while she's sleeping and hides empty eggs.

Last year at 3 a dozen eggs was almost too many for DS so I would do maybe 8

We're doing about 10 plastic eggs. Some will have jelly beans/ m&ms and some will have Annie's bunnies. And I might hide the real eggs he helps dye which will probably be 4-5.

We'll see if he's even interested in hunting this year. Last year I "hid" them in plain sight and he was done after 3.

We do glow in the dark eggs (tea lights inside) and hide 3 dozen (for 3 kids).

We always did just one dozen real eggs

One kid, so nothing to open.

We will do 6 or 7 plastic filled eggs per child and some real ones (a few dozen). There will be 6 kids. So that's about 50 plastic eggs altogether.

I will try to have them wait until all are found to open them, solely so they don't try to eat the candy as they go. (They will get m&ms, jelly beans, and craisins.)

I've got two dozen for two kids. They can find whatever they find. I can't imagine they'll find that many more than the other. They are filled with Annie's bunnies, springtime gummed and raisins. I don't care when they eat them.

When I was growing up we had color coded eggs. If you saw an egg that wasn't your color, you just left it alone and kept looking

I agree. We got our own baskets that had eggs in them. Then I went to two easter egg hunts. The one at church was divided up by age and parents helped the little ones find them and stay focused.

So what would you do. Tell each kid they stop hunting after they get 12... Make them sit down after the hunt and divide it up between the two.

I just don't remember caring that I only got a percentage of what another kid got

I'll probably hide 2 dozen for both the kids. I have no clue on what they'll be filled with though. I'm excited for this year bc dd will be able to fully participate!

We did something similar when I was a kid. I'm all for life lessons, but lets face it.. some are super good at finding eggs (older kids, maybe) and little ones might not be. I don't necessarily like a life lesson on Easter, either. An older kid with 12 eggs filled with yummy candy, verses a 2 year old with 1 egg? Meh.

When we were younger, we colored a dozen eggs each (myself and two brothers).. we had a big age gap- we're each 6 years apart. So at 12 I was pretty good at finding eggs.. compared to my 6 year old brother. And my even younger youngest brother. So my mom put our initials on them

If I found a brothers, I left it there. We all had to find our own.

Yeah, I'm very much "life isn't fair" most of the time. But I feel like on Easter Sunday when there are a bunch of cool eggs to find I can't find it in me to tell my kids to suck it up because they only got 2 eggs. Depends on their ages though..older kids can duke it out

I tell DD to stop after she finds 12. She is pretty good at stopping and then helping DS. I have seen the color coded hunts and like that idea but never found non-multi colored bags of eggs this year.

Public hunts where we used to live were hunts for empty eggs. Everyone turned in their eggs at the end and got a goody bag. So the kid that got 50 eggs got the same amount as the one who got one. I thought it was weird at first, but they were the best run hunts I have ever been to. There was no mass hysteria over eggs, older kids were helping and sharing with the younger kids, and everyone was still having fun!
