Hobbies?

Re: Hobbies?

  • @yvanehtnioj I actually found I can't paint my nails or it's much more difficult for me to pay attention to other things.  Maybe I was a raccoon or a magpie in another life, but if my nails are pretty I spend way too much time staring at the colors on my hands.  (I don't wear my engagement ring for the same reason.)

@Shepa123 I love reading but think I might hate a book group, at least a real one.  I have a feeling I wouldn't actually read the books, although discussing books I would've read anyway is appealing.  DH and I have an informal tiny book club where we take turns suggesting things we've always meant to read but haven't made time for.  I got him into Jane Austen, and lately he's gotten me into anything Ancient Greece.  It's kind of amazing how gross the Iliad is.

@TaylorHam86 Slow jog for the win!  The last couple times I ran, I had Benjamin in the stroller and I'm pretty sure I can walk as fast as I was 'running,' maybe faster.  It's hard to be motivated to keep on when the going is that slow, but I want a medal.  My SIL has done two marathons and she's not the first person who comes to mind when you think 'runner,' so I must be able to do it too. I just need to make sure it's a race where they wait to stop the clock until everyone is done.  When I was in much better shape and hadn't had any babies yet, it took me three hours to finish a half, and there were two maybe three people behind me but they still had the clock going for us.

I am a reader my whole life I have been a reader, like 2 to 4 books per week on average mostly fiction but some historical non fiction. Well, since becoming pregnant I have not completed a book, I just can't concentrate. This concerns me and even though I know I won't have the time I used to read with baby around I really hope at least some of my concentration returns. I also miss my hot yoga and am super excited because a new studio has just opened up in my area. I had just started training to run long distance when I found out I was pregnant so I plan on picking that up again. Together DH and I are big campers, and we both love craft beer and good food. ETA because somehow hot yoga became whore yoga :(
  • I'm in a band, I play keys and sing. It's the only thing that keeps me sane! Half the guys in the band are dads and are really supportive right now. We are recording some new songs before I go on leave, and then they are going to work on writing new stuff while I'm out. Then, this summer I should be able to start playing some shows again!

I used to play roller derby, and would love I find another physical hobby again after LO is born. I'm thinking maybe kayaking since I live near the ocean/lots of bays and canals.

Mommy to my sweet boy, JG, born May 15, 2014

    Baby #2 due 4/26/16!

  • @Jennyinheaven The people who say you won't read anymore when you have kids are lying liars who lie.  You might not be able to read the same quantity as before, but if you seriously want to read, it will happen.
I have no personal experience with this yet but I have seen several friends manage to keep up with their reading after having kids. One of them actually reads more, and better quality books too, since she had her son.

I've been disappointed by how much my reading has slowed down since September. I had no idea what pregnancy was going to do to my attention span! I've gone from a book every week or two to a book every month or two. I can manage the non-fiction pregnancy books just fine but novels take forever. I've made my peace with how much slower it's going to be once baby is here but I am not willing to just let it go! My To Read list is way too long for that.

Lol. Know the feeling. DH keeps asking me to go for a ride in his supra. Not only am I sure I'm not going to fit but has he seen how hard it is for me to get out of bed in the morning? How in hell does he expect me to get out of that thing.

I'd love to go to import alliance but obviously difficult since its halfway across the US. How far way is it for you? DH has been trying to get me to go to SEMA for a while, but every year has had its roadblocks. Maybe next year.

But yeah, was surprised at the gain; on most cars, you might only see 20-30. Or I laugh when I hear that people put in $20k + into their civics for only small gains. Could have had a corvette, bro.

Although you claim you are not an expert, you seem to have a good grasp of car mechanics and modifications. How'd you get into it?

Well I haven't looked into where it is this year, but we are in southern IN, so a few hours away if its in Nashville again, or 1.5 if its in Louisville. When DH and I first started dating, I think we got lucky one year and both IA and HIN were in Nashville at the same time... Or maybe it was when we were in Chicago... My mind, it has the deds.

@Jennyinheaven‌ I think you can still read if you make a concerted effort to, but having kids will definitely make an impact. My reading time has significantly diminished since I had kids. I'm an immersive reader, in that I completely shut out the world around me when I'm reading. That didn't matter so much when DS1 was tiny, but as soon as he became mobile it meant I couldn't read while he was up and about. I used to be a 1 book a week kind of person. Now I'm lucky to be a 1 book a month person.

Im more concerned that my concentration level has completely gone out the window during pregnancy and am looking forward to its return. I am hoping to at least get some reading in when she is tiny and then when DH is around to do some baby duty.

@Jennyinheaven‌ I found that Ebooks were the best when DS1 was tiny. I got the Nook and Kindle apps on my phone, so I could read one handed while nursing. It was also good for the middle of the night feedings because I could read without waking DH up.

I won't say I had the best concentration when he was a newborn though. I think that'll be dependent on how much sleep you're getting.

  • This thread is kind of depressing.  Here's what I USED to do:
-Train and teach martial arts.  We do full contact stuff, so I haven't been able to do much of either, even when I had the energy.  I told all my kids that I teach that I was tired of dealing with them and decided to grow my own (they understand sarcasm, at least I hope).

-Fire juggling.  I remember seeing an aerialist somewhere on this thread, us circus folks should stick together!  I can still do this a bit, but the belly tends to get in the way!  I'm due right before the spring training camp which involves camping out for a weekend!  Hopefully I'll be able to get back to this as well.

-Board gaming.  I see quite a few gamers out there.  Pregnancy brain has made this somewhat difficult. I can still play, but I lose really badly :)

-Reading.  Yay!  These days mostly brain dead novels.  Just finished The Princess Bride for the first time.  It took me 3/4 of the book to figure out that there wasn't a Morgenstern...  I got a bunch of parenting books, but I can't seem to retain the information!

-Cooking.  Still get to do lots of this, as long as I remember not to stand in the kitchen for hours perfecting a super complicated recipe :)

@iqwedding3‌ I know, right? All of the exercises I enjoy are no-nos during pregnancy, which means I have effectively not exercised for the last 3 years. I used to do martial arts and fencing, and I also love to ride my bike. I'm looking forward to taking a break after this LO to get into shape again.

I remember reading it for the first time a few years ago and I didn't get that either until I decided it would be fun to read the source material. Google schooled me on the joke pretty quickly. It's so good though, and they did a great job with the movie. Definitely watch if you haven't seen it yet!

Oh man, I remember reading it as a kid (before we had the fanciness of this new-fangled internet) and searching for months for the original S. Morgenstern version. I scoured used book stores, put in requests at all of the local libraries, and even wrote a letter to William Goldman. I was totally taken in.

I've seen it a million times, what suprised me in the book was that it's as sarcastic (actually moreso than) the movie

I was a young'n in the Bay Area when the first Fast & Furious came out. Although we weren't like LA, San Jose had a pretty epic street racing scene. So I'd go to the races on Friday nights & pick up some knowledge, mainly for the purpose of being able to talk shit to people with stupid ass cars. It was usually boring (Integ v. Integ all night long) but occasionally you'd see some amazing cars. One night a guy brought his Skyline GT-R!!! It was right hand drive & everything. You could get them imported and made US legal for about $60k. Droooooooooool.

After a few years I realized I would never have the money to act on my car fantasies so I kind of gave up. I drive a Prius now. BTW, looked up the Lexus ISF, looks sweet. Good job!

I could swear I found Princess Bride by S. Morgenstern in my high school library, and didn't know until some time in college that there is no S. Morgenstern.  Maybe my high school library secretly had a portal to the impossible library in Beauty and the Beast (one of the McKinley retellings anyway).

  • I love to read and sew. Those are pretty much the 2 big ones. I second (or third) the idea that the people who tell you reading will go by the wayside after kids are idiots. I have been a huge reader all my life, having a kid did not change that at all. I didn't read as much right after DS was born, but once I started sleeping again it was all good.

I have to say, after reading this thread I feel like my hobbies are pretty lame.

  • I love gardening. I plan on planting something fierce after dd is born so it gives me something to do with her. I also used to do off road/cross country mountain biking. Absolute blast! But sold my bike after I got pregnant. Would love to some day get back in to that and horse showing again. Definitely my favorite hobbies.

    It's a BOY

  • Lately my only hobby is TV. Sad!!! I make one awesome scrapbook a year but that's not all the time, more like two weekends a year. I like hiking and camping but my husband doesn't so I don't do it anymore. That's sad too. This thread is inspiring me to get some new hobbies!

We plan to take the kids camping at some point, but we did more back-country camping before, and I really don't want to deal with diapers while in the wilderness.

But once they're potty trained, we definitely plan on making it a family affair. We want our girls to love the outdoors as much as we do :-)

@jkbma2014 All I can think of is you're planning a garden of carnivorous plants, but that seems unlikely.  What sort of garden are you planning?  (also, rhetorical question, why is the tag not working?)
  • I really like to read, run, and work on planning the Y camp I am involved in.  I have kept up with my reading during pregnancy.  I love sitting down with a good book.  I was running until 31 weeks, but finally stopped because I was getting uncomfortable.  I can't wait to train for another half marathon and for the LA full next year.  Camp has also taken a back seat this year because our LO will only be a few weeks old and I can't take him with me.  DH is still going and has agreed to stay home next year so that I can go.
