How much solid food?

DD is getting cereal for breakfast and fruit or veggies for lunch and dinner. I make my own baby food. I know each jar is 1/4c, but is that how much she should be eating? Someone told me she should eat half a jar at this point. I don't want to over or under feed her!

Re: How much solid food?

  • It really varies for DD. Most days she eats a jar but some days it's a little less and some days you can tell she wants more so she'll eat a few spoonfuls out if another jar. I feel like if she's still making cues to eat (opening her mouth even when the spoon isn't near it and looking at the food) then she wants more. When she's done she doesn't open her mouth when the spoon is near her.

  • I feed LO some of whatever I'm eating 1-2x a day.  I haven't been measuring anything; I just feed her little bits for as long as she is interested.

Yesterday, she had about 1T of scrambled egg and about 1/10th of an avocado.  Today, she had about 7-8 peas and two pieces of gnocchi, plus about 1/8th of a banana.

At her 6m visit, LO's pediatrician said we should be feeding her solids twice a day, but it's more for practice eating things and exposure to the variety of tastes and textures than it is for actual nutrition.  I nurse LO before I feed her any solids, and we still nurse on demand throughout the day/night.

Well that thread says 'solid foods-how often'. I was asking how much, not when.

  • So now everyone is responsible for not only using the search button, but also for going into every post that could be related so that we don't have duplicates? Get over yourself @lindszachary‌

To answer your question: our pediatrician says to work up towards 3Tbs per serving (one of each type of serving if you aren't doing blended foods-veggie, fruit, protein) and by 1 they should be doing those 3 times a day. So of 3Tbs is roughly an ounce, that is a good starting place and they'll be up around 3ish ounces a serving when they are around 1.

No need to use the search button the other post was literally an inch away from hers. Unless your blind it is easily visible

@llybeck‌ you were right. This board needs less puppies and rainbows
Lol, well why the hell would you point out there is already a thread that is basically exactly the same?!? Not to mention seventy billion other threads about the exact same thing... You're such a snotty bitch @lindszachary‌, just get over yourself already ;)
  • @lindszachary‌ I'm certain postpartum means until LO is 18 because you can legally kick them out at that point. Counting down the days...

I don't BF (because I'm a horrible mother) so I blame the formula. That damn evil Gerber corporation, it's the devil I tells ya!

Thank you!! That's exactly what I was asking. Our pedi didn't tell us an amount, she just said start with 2 times a day and work up to 3. I didn't think to ask how much.

Well that thread says 'solid foods-how often'. I was asking how much, not when.

But if you had read it, almost EVERYBODY said how much they gave their LO and when.

You must have a great imagination. I didn't see anyone answer that they fed their LO a whole jar at each meal, or half a jar, or whatever. If you read my question, I was asking if babies at this age should be eating a whole jar at each meal, because someone had told me they should only be eating a half a jar. I appreciate your valuable input though.

Oh good lord, what does it matter? If my DD eats 2oz 3 times a day that in absolutely no way has anything to do with how much your LO will eat. You were told by "someone" that they should only be eating 1/2 a jar. So you came here to ask other random people what their opinion is? Why don't you just follow your LO's lead and feed them if they want until they're done? As long as you aren't replacing BM/F with solids then you're fine, that's just common sense.

Remember a few months ago when every other post was "how many ounces of BM/F?" "how often do I offer breast/bottle?" etc, etc, etc, and the answer, EVERY TIME was that you should feed them when they're hungry and as much as they'll eat? Yeah, this is the same thing, it's different for every baby. I'm not trying to be an asshole but it gets annoying because this is probably 75% of the topics started here and it's really just not that hard to figure out.

Then why do you waste your time on this board if it's so annoying? I asked because at my DD 6 month appt, she dropped below the weight curve and her doctor was concerned and is having is go back for a weight check next week. Being that this is my first child, it isn't all common sense to me. I feed her has much as she wants, as often as she wants, but obviously that wasn't enough. So instead of getting so annoyed with so many of the same questions on this board, as you say, why don't you just offer advice if asked or mind your own business if the question annoys you so much?

Why don't you ask your doctor what you should do if your LO's weight is such a concern? You're doctor was concerned but didn't give you any indication as to what you should be doing? That doesn't make sense. And I think a lot of us have had our LO's drop weight or be less than they were their last appointment and it's not usually a big deal. If you question was specifically about your situation (LO not gaining weight) then why wouldn't you have stated that in your OP? We're not going to be able to give you specific information like that if you don't even give us your whole question. I can't read your mind so don't give me a bitchy little tirade about you worrying about LO's weight gain when that's nothing of what you actually asked.

To answer your actual question now that you've actually stated it: If I were in your position I would #1 ask my doctor what they think since they were the ones concerned and #2 I would offer more BM or formula. Your LO isn't getting their nutrition from solids at this point, they are just learning to eat. Their nutrition is coming from BM/formula so if weight gain is the concern, that's probably where you would want to start.

I'm a FTM too and really, this IS common sense. And if all this stuff was a mystery to you going into having a kid (not knowing where their nutrition is coming from, how much/often to feed) then you probably should have looked into that a little more. I know I'm coming off as a jerk right now but really, we do have so many posts about this already and this is something that you should have researched, not just asked internet strangers about, ESPECIALLY if your doctor was concerned about it.

And I'm going to keep posting wherever and whenever I want, just like you will, because I can and I don't care if you like it or not.
