I'm in a position right now that would be completely useless to go back to once the baby is born (the money I make wouldn't even cover childcare). I work in education, and positions are starting to come up for the 2014-15 school year. That said, I'm at the point where I can't exactly hide my belly anymore, and--even though it shouldn't--I think it makes for a negative impression on employers. I mean, really--would you want to hire a person and then pay for their maternity leave before they even start working?
Is anyone else going through this, or have you been through it in the past? What kind of job were you looking for/did you get? Did you feel the need to explain or defend your pregnancy during the interview process?
Re: anyone else job hunting or interviewing?
I'm not looking for a job, but I did actually just interview for a position. They actually contacted me and didn't know I was pregnant. I was interested in the position, so I went to the interview (in a loose dress!) and told them at the end of the interview. I could be delusional, but I'm pretty sure they didn't know I was pregnant before I told them.
I was hopeful that they would be able to look past the pregnancy since I am really a good fit for the position, but I just found out that they've offered the job to someone else. The HR director said they were very impressed by my portfolio and resume, but they decided to go with another candidate. I am sure the pregnancy played a role in their decision, even if they're not saying it.

In your situation, I think I would let your pregnancy be the proverbial "elephant in the room". I can't see how it could help you get hired by discussing it and they're not legally allowed to mention it, so I would just not say anything. You're right that it might very well preclude them from hiring you, even though I think that's illegal (but nearly impossible to prove). Even if you find a new position, though, most aren't required to provide maternity coverage, or even protect your job for you if you haven't been there a year, when FMLA kicks in. Once you get a job offer, then certainly make sure to ask about making sure you CAN take leave. But I'd wait until that point.
I'm not sure I'll get an offer, but it'll be a tough decision if I do. I'm worried about being new and leaving right away for leave and flexibility with doctor's appointments. We'll see!
