anyone else job hunting or interviewing?

I'm in a position right now that would be completely useless to go back to once the baby is born (the money I make wouldn't even cover childcare). I work in education, and positions are starting to come up for the 2014-15 school year. That said, I'm at the point where I can't exactly hide my belly anymore, and--even though it shouldn't--I think it makes for a negative impression on employers. I mean, really--would you want to hire a person and then pay for their maternity leave before they even start working?

Is anyone else going through this, or have you been through it in the past? What kind of job were you looking for/did you get? Did you feel the need to explain or defend your pregnancy during the interview process?

Re: anyone else job hunting or interviewing?

  • I'm not looking for a job, but I did actually just interview for a position. They actually contacted me and didn't know I was pregnant. I was interested in the position, so I went to the interview (in a loose dress!) and told them at the end of the interview. I could be delusional, but I'm pretty sure they didn't know I was pregnant before I told them.

I was hopeful that they would be able to look past the pregnancy since I am really a good fit for the position, but I just found out that they've offered the job to someone else. The HR director said they were very impressed by my portfolio and resume, but they decided to go with another candidate. I am sure the pregnancy played a role in their decision, even if they're not saying it.

  • I was considering an internal lateral move (just to do something else for my same company since I've been doing approximately the same thing for the last 3 years). But I changed my mind when I didn't find anything I was excited about before my belly became obvious. Luckily I don't have to move right now and I decided it was better to be slightly bored while focused more on family than work.

In your situation, I think I would let your pregnancy be the proverbial "elephant in the room". I can't see how it could help you get hired by discussing it and they're not legally allowed to mention it, so I would just not say anything. You're right that it might very well preclude them from hiring you, even though I think that's illegal (but nearly impossible to prove). Even if you find a new position, though, most aren't required to provide maternity coverage, or even protect your job for you if you haven't been there a year, when FMLA kicks in. Once you get a job offer, then certainly make sure to ask about making sure you CAN take leave. But I'd wait until that point.
  • I found out on Tuesday that my contract is not being renewed so I am in that boat right now.

  • While I'm not happy you all are in similar situations, I'm glad to know I'm not alone! Job hunting is so frustrating, and it's even worse with the added stress of a showing belly. I just want to enjoy my pregnancy without feeling like it's holding me back financially.

  • I just got hired for a new position as a store manager at 19 weeks. I was upfront and honest with them during my second interview and thankfully they are very willing to work with me!!! My current job is a half hour + from home so just fuel alone is costing me too much. New job is very close... Good luck to all of you!!!
  • Same situation with me. I'm a teacher, but I know nobody is going to hire me when I'll be starting the year on maternity leave. I'm just going to look after the baby & take a lesser, maybe part time position till next school year I'm thinking. Good luck
  • I interviewed this past week because I was contacted about this position, I wasn't planning on looking until after my leave. I told them at the end of the interview, knowing that we would have to negotiate my maternity leave since you aren't eligible for FML until being there for a year.

I'm not sure I'll get an offer, but it'll be a tough decision if I do. I'm worried about being new and leaving right away for leave and flexibility with doctor's appointments. We'll see!
  • I halted my job search when I found out I was pregnant. I didn't want to move when I knew that I would not have my job held for me or feel 'guilt' for not coming back at 8 weeks post c-section. I recently spoke with the recruiter who I had last spoken to that week before I found out I was pregnant, and he said he had heard I was pregnant and was like "well yeah, I guess you aren't going to look for a job now!" I think that, depending on a job, a lot of employers don't want to already know they will be 'out' an employee for a big block of time.
