Gestational thrombocytopenia (low platelets)

Who has it? Is your OB doing anything for it?

I had it with DS. I haven't been tested for it yet this time around (my OB does final blood tests around 34-36 weeks), but I'm desperately hoping I don't develop it again. I'm having a c-section and an ovarian mass removed, and the thought of doing all that with critically low platelet levels is pretty scary. It would mean general anesthesia instead of just a spinal block, and then no morphine or other strong painkillers in recovery. Yikes.

For you BTDT moms, if you have it once, is it guaranteed to come back? Or have you managed to dodge it in later pregnancies?

  • @savannah_girl Mine was idiopathic and resolved almost immediately. My OB just shrugs it off.

Can I ask how low your platelets were for the DX? Mine just informed me mine are low and have been consistently but seemed to brush it off as only a concern if I wanted an epidural (I don't) I also have a host of other chronic issues so maybe they think of it as just a drop in the hat at this point

  • @JAM85 At the lowest mine were 101, so they were low but not life-threateningly so. 100 would've been the cutoff for epidural.
