Thoughts on Mildred as a middle name...

Just wondering if this is awful?  It's my deceased grandmother's name and I would probably add it as a second middle name.  I myself have 2 middle names and it never really phased me, but I rarely use my second on any forms so it's kind of just "extra".  But I like the idea of honoring her.

Re: Thoughts on Mildred as a middle name...

  • I don't like the name but am all about honoring family in the mn and would be all for it, I also have two MNs and rarely use the second one.

  • IMHO-- it's awful.

I am totally in the camp though of not using a name to honor someone if I don't love it.  I mean- how can it be an honor if I cringe when I hear the name?

There are so many ways to honor a loved one who has passed.

I think though I am in the minority on this opinion, though.  I should have saved this for the UO thread.

  • This was also my grandmother's name, but she hated it. I guess it is kind of a harsh name, but Millie isn't so bad.

  • To be honest, I thought it was awful too...but now as I get closer to my due date I feel sentimental towards it. I honestly don't even know what her middle name was (I remember her maiden name in that spot), but I'll try to find out from a relative. Thanks for the feedback!

I wanted to add I recently looked up names with a similar meaning to Mildred, which is "gentle strength." There are no names with that exact meaning but there are a lot of pretty names that could be combined to give the meaning gentle strength.

    That's a good idea too
  • Aww, I like it. I love the NN Millie, and have considered using Millicent if I have a girl. Honestly, I prefer it to Mildred, but I would consider Mildred it it was a family name.

  • I loved all of the grandmothers for DH and I, but their names.... Well their names aren't as easy to love. (Peggy, Bobbie, Patience, Irving) so we decided to skip tossing them into the baby name.

  • Millie is cute but yeah Mildred is tough. Amelia might be good as a connection and call her Millie.
