I'm 32 weeks today and my doctor just informed me that I had failed my 1hr glucose a month ago! Apparently the results "slipped through the cracks" and they didn't notice till my appt today. I can't take the 3 hr until Saturday and am totally freaking out. Won't get results till next week.
This is my second pregnancy I passed the one hour during my first pregnancy. I'm not overweight at all, never have been. 5'4, 144lbs right now (started at 121), diabetes is not in my family at all, but my one hour glucose was 171!
I had only eaten oatmeal at 7am that morning, my test was at 1:00pm. I exercise, eat tons of fruits and vegetables, no red meat, very little fat in my diet. Has this happen to anyone? So worried, especially because I wasn't told until now at 32 weeks!
Re: Failed 1hr glucose! Help!
I'm 4'11" and only about 135lb right now, also was never overweight or had diabetes history, so I was amazed and thought I had done something wrong, but I was eating fine.
Maybe the oatmeal had some sugars in it that spiked the first test? I had plain eggs before mine and water for breakfast. But depending on what oatmeal you ate, that could have had a few sugars in it.
If you do end up with GD, good fats, protein, and fiber will be your best friends.
Try not to freak out, many women fail the 1-hour then pass the 3-hour but even if you do have GD it isn't the end of the world!
Good luck!

I failed my 1 and 3 hr and found out last week I have gestational diabetes. I'm a healthy weight, never been overweight, exericse, eat right. I have three friends who've been health weights, exercised and got GD as well. It's just the pregnancy hormones and placenta doing their own thing with insulin and more than likely it will go away once the baby comes out.
I'm sorry they caught it so late, but hopefully you pass your 3 hour!
LOVE this!! I felt so shameful and my self-worth went down a lot when I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes because I thought I was healthy!! I hadn't gained too much weight, exercised still, etc. But now I realize that it really is luck of the draw.
Tons of fruit has tons of sugar-- natural or not. Yes you are getting the nutrition from a banana compared to a cookie but your body will.process the sugars the same way. Fat does not cause diabetes- you need fats in your diet... the good kind. Fat does not increase your blood sugar. In fact it keeps you more satisfied.
I hope everything works out for you.
I second what others have said. I failed, but passed the three-hour. I also am vegan, very health conscious, and a runner!
Despite the results, my midwife had me start a low glycemic diet that has really helped! I don't have GD but feel the sugar high/lows that make me feel awful. It's basically minimal processed foods, more whole grains, and balancing all meals with some protein. Good luck! Bring a good book or some knitting!
GD is one of those things that you really don't have control over. Sure, being overweight, having a family hisory of diabetes, etc. can predispose you to GD. However, plenty of women get it who have no risk factors. I had it when I was pregnant with DS even though I was a competitive triathlete, ate healthy, had an athletic body with a lot of muscle, etc.
This time around, I passed my 1hour with flying colors (I was a 120 and the cut-off was 135). It's all about how your body's hormones interact with the extra hormones created by the placenta. Sometimes the placental hormones interfere with your body's ability to know to and create enough insulin in response to your blood sugar.
Really, if you are diagnosed with GD, it's not that bad. Most women manage to control their blood sugar with diet, daily testing and exercise. The diet is basically just balancing carbs you eat (and you have to eat less of them) with protein. If you do end up needing insulin, it's also not the end of the world. In the grand scheme of things, it's a pretty small price to pay (and short time period) for a healthy pregnancy and baby.
