Re: UO Thursday

  • I cannot understand the show Naked and Afraid and think the people who go on the show have some issues. I mean why would you want to be in the jungle naked? I get that you like camping but you can do it with clothes and with a tent/RV.

  • @summergirl1211‌ I do a lot of reading during car naps (when I'm parked somewhere, not while driving obviously ;)). Also if Dagny wants to watch a movie I will read on my iPad while she watches the movie.

  • Not sure if this is really a UO, but I am constantly blown away at posts on here about new book suggestions. I'm sure I just have different priorities (ah hem... tv and sleeping) but I can't finish a book these days for the life of me, unless I'm on a plane or something.
I haven't watched a single minute of TV for over a week, and I've seen two movies since giving birth to Tumaini. I don't even try watching movies because I fall asleep on my favorite sitcoms and shows. However, I love to read a bit before every night and I love all the book suggestion posts.

  • The few times H's niece has watched Will has been occasions where we were out for a few drinks, etc. I rarely drink these days, so after a couple I am tipsy and when we come home I just say "H - give her whatever cash you have left!" which is usually $60+ dollars (and she's only watched him for 3-4 hours). And now that I've set that ridiculous precedent, I completely regret it. She watched him last Saturday and I bought them take out since they hadn't eaten ($30) and then I think my H gave them $40 before we left and then $50 when we got home. Um. What? They watched him from 5-10, which is a while, but he goes to sleep at 7:30.

She is going to college in the Fall, so I feel like we are really helping her out by giving her a little extra....but boy! A night out is expensive as hell! I would rather eat pizza in my sweatpants.

Also, I should have babysat more when I was younger. And saved more money.

I think babysitters are way overpaid (at least in our case) and it is actually painful for me to pay the babysitter when MH and I go out.

I mean, they have maybe 1-1.5 hours of actual babysitting to do and the rest of the time they get to sit on our couch, watch TV, and eat our food. $40 for 1 hour of watching a baby and 3 hours of watching a movie and eating our snacks seems ridic. I think it should be totally appropriate to pay less for the hours that your child is asleep.

I agree! if they want to be paid the same then they should be doing something, like cleaning or folding laundry.

This exactly!! Our sitter actually does clean so I find even though she is expensive, that it works out really nicely. Whenever Ava is asleep, she cleans cause she gets bored sitting around. It's so nice to come home to a clean house that smells wonderful! One of our previous sitters left a huge mess everywhere and it sucked coming home to that!

  • I used to babysit regularly. When the kid went to bed, I would tidy any mess we had made, but was uncomfortable doing more unless it was family. Some people would be weirded out by the sitter cleaning up.

Also, even though the kid may be asleep, I think of that money as hazard pay. You never know if that night is the night little Jimmy decides to be a terror. I once babysat a tiny baby. She was asleep when the parents left. About ten minutes after they left, she started screaming. Nothing I did calmed her down. She screamed until just before they came home (after a massive poopy diaper). I was panicking and calling my mom for advice, in tears because I couldn't figure out what to do. So yeah, hazard pay.

  • @lewispm‌ I totally get where you are coming from. A good sitter shouldn't leave your house a mess like that. Any chances of getting a different person?

  • I never thought about the way I paid my sitter until this last time, when DS was super tired before she came over and I put him down early. She made 50 bucks to eat the dinner I'd left for her and watch Frozen on DVD. Not a bad deal!

I figure it makes up for all the times DS has been hysterical when we leave, or not wanted to brush his teeth, or not wanted to eat anything. It's worth it to me to overpay her if it means she's available when we need her.

  • To clarify, just in case, I love my niece (our sitter) and I am grateful for a night out. She is great with Will and doesn't leave a mess. It just makes for quite an expensive night when we gladly give her all our cash (again - our choice - we don't have a set rate or anything and feel like we are throwing her a bone cause she is a young soon to be college student) and have dinner/drinks/movie, whatever. Dolla Dolla bills, ya'll!

I could probably eat a salad every day for lunch for the rest of my life and be ok with it.  In the past 3 weeks I have learned to crave them. On that note I do still really want a snickers right now, dangit. I guess those are more of a confession but I am sure not many share my opinion on salads.

I like salads but I still feel so unsatisfied after my salad lunch. I just ate at about 11:15 and it's 1:22 and I'm hangry. A coworker went to Subway and brought back a box of cookies...as I sit here trying to wait as long as possible to eat my string cheese lol.

Same way here everyday shake for breakfast, by ten im dying of starvation! Eat some fruit until lunch, then devour my sald and now it's almost one and my stomach is trying to eat me from the inside. I even ate a apple trying to curb my appetite and nada. I hate diets! I just want a huge ass bowl of pasta!
