Pumping Schedule Help

(This will be a post and run until prep at 11am)

I am trying to figure out the best way to pump/keep my supply. Yesterday, I was only able to pump once and while I got a lot because it had been over 4 hours, I am worried that will mess me up in the future.

I wake up at 5:45. Do my hair/get dressed. Evelyn hasn't woken up the past two nights and I have to wake her at 6:15 to eat. While she is eating, I pump the other side and usually get around 6-7oz from engorgement. We leave to go to daycare at 7, and I get to work about 7:20. Now, my goal was to pump at 7:30. But the side she ate from is giving me nada--so do I just do one side? I teach from 8am until 11am, and have 11-noon off. I pumped at 11 yesterday and got about 10oz. Then we have a short homeroom and lunch starts at 12:18-1pm. Then I teach two more periods and school ends at 2:55.

So while yesterday I did pump enough to feed her today, will only pumping once kill my supply? Any suggestions/thoughts/tips? Thank youuuu

Re: Pumping Schedule Help

  • I would pump every little time you can until you get into a routine and figure out if it will hurt your supply. (Sorry that doesn't really seem very helpful).  I would maybe try to pump both sides at 730 at school just to see if you get anything then.  If you keep pumping at that time, perhaps you will start getting more then? Are you planning on just pumping at the 11 time or will you pump again at lunch? I would try to pump again at lunch if you can. Even if it's only for 10 minutes or so.  Good luck!

  • I pump at 6:30, 11:30 (or 12:15 as is the case today, ugh) and 3:30. There's just no other way for me to do it. Like pp's said, it will eventually dwindle your supply, but that is one of the reasons I maintained an oversupply for so long. Can you feed her on one side and pump the other after you pick her up?All that said, although my supply has started to regulate some, I'm still able to pump enough for him most days and haven't had to dip into my stash much yet and he's almost 7 mos. (:cries at thought:) I expect my supply to tank over the next couple months though.

  • Ok so far today, I pumped at 730 and got 1oz each side. Just now pumped and got 4oz one side, 2 on the other. So I should try and do a lunchtime one, maybe the end of lunch in an hour and fifteen minutes? Is 10 minutes long enough to devote to it? I have my journalism kids in the room throughout lunch.

I could also pump when I get home if that would help. At 3, I will pick her up from daycare so I just bf when we got home yesterday.

  • I had supply issues and would pump my entire lunch.  At first I only have to pump 1--20 minutes.

As long as you are making enough milk for her I wouldn't worry about adding another session.

  • OH and another thing I did was pump first thing then get ready in the morning so there was more time between pumping and feeding her.

  • Obviously I don't have experience with this, but can you pump right after school, and then nurse her when you get home as you currently are? Won't your body learn that you need more at 4:00?

How was school/first day back? I missed the update.

  • You should also make sure you pump on both sides each time (except when feeding her), because it at least stimulates your breasts.
