I don't think anyone needs thoughts and prayers when their child has a cold. Seems like my newsfeed is filled with "t/ps needed poor little peter has a cold" No you need thoughts and prayers when your husband has a cold.
I totally fucking hate working and would definitely be a SAHM if I could afford it. I'm going to have 9 months of being a SAHM, but then I have to go back to work for financial reasons and I really don't want to. I don't care if that makes me a "lazy" or "unambitious" person. I've never wanted a big career. I'd rather be at home doing something I deem to be worthwhile (raising a useful member of society), than putting more money in the pocket of some guy who spends more time playing golf at the country club than he does at the office. I'd rather deal with poo and tantrums than office politics.

This made me laugh! DH had a cold a few weeks after I gave birth last time. He finally shut up about it when I told him that I did less complaining in labour than he was with a cold!

Knowing what my husband is like with a cold, I will probably get to use that line sometime ...
I wish they would ban smoking at my place of employment. I hate smoking even though I am a former smoker. I hate walking outside of my building and being hit with a wall of smoke as soon as I step outside. I hate getting on the elevator and the smoke being so heavy that I feel like I still smell like smoke ten minutes later sitting in my office. And I really hate getting on the elevator with smell of smoke plus body odor. That makes me want to vomit.

Call me crazy (and I hope this isn't unpopular, but apparently it is at my work) but if you can't do your job properly, OR if you're a no-call no-show for a week, you seriously shouldn't have a job anymore.
I don't like Autism Speaks. Awareness is swell, but I'd rather give to a local org that'll directly help families.
I agree. I do both. But I agree totally.
Supposedly folks with autism don't really like AS. A girl with autism started a site called neurotypical speaks to poke fun saying if NT folks want to speak for folks with autism, then folks with autism can speak for NT folks. AS sued to get her to take it down.

The only time I have ever gotten comments from strangers about my DS (other than about him being cute or, early on, him being small) was when I recently had him on a leash one day at Home Depot. I literally had at least three comments. One old lady looked at him and goes, "Ooh. Poor baby." Another old lady said, "What is that?!?!!" in a very judgmental tone and some dude just started laughing when he walked by us. Sorry, I'm 8+ months pregnant and can't be running all over the place chasing him. And having him sit in the basket only works for about 5 minutes.

I'm seriously annoyed by all the pregnant women getting SOOO butt hurt over perfect strangers comments. I know it's hard to believe but not everyone is out to get you and hurt your feelings... People say "you're so big" because you are 8 months pregnant and have a HUMAN in your belly and you probably are SOOO big (I know I am). I get if it's your MIL making the comment or something but from a perfect stranger, just get over yourself and realize it's really probably not about you... People are just awkward around pregnant women.
I agree that the SAHM/WM discussions are annoying, but I have to disagree that it's a personal choice. If it was purely a choice for all families, it wouldn't be nearly as hot a topic as it is. We couldn't afford for me to be a full time SAHM or a full time WM at this point. Choice wasn't a factor in the decision for me to work PT, it was made out of necessity.

I agree with this. Right now I am working FT due to financial reasons, and when this baby comes I will be working PT due to finances. I would very much prefer to be a SAHM, and I think a lot of times I feel defensive about certain comments I read because it was not my choice.

People are awkward around people with disabilities too. And it's probably not about the person with the disability, it's about the person making the comment and their ignorance. That doesn't mean they should say whatever comes into their head. I guess I'm just not sure where to draw the line about when comments or stares are okay if this is the way it's framed.
Are we really comparing pregnancy and a disability right now??? Not even remotely the same. For the record no, I do not think it is ok for people to make ignorant comments to the disabled...

There have been times where I wish it was banned except in your own home & little glass phone booth like containers or something. I hate walking anywhere & having to hold my breath through a cloud of smoke. DD doesn't know to hold her breath at 14 months. This coming from a 2 pack/day former smoker. When I went for my a/s at a smoke-free hospital some asshat was sitting in front of the woman's pavilion (where pregnant women go & L&D is) smoking away...
First I enjoy his music. Every album he makes is a complete package. He is not an artist that tries to sell songs but albums. He continues to grow as an artist and every album he makes is different from the previous.
I agree he should keep his mouth shut sometimes, but I also believe it is easier to disagree with him. Example, the Taylor Swift scandal. Was he wrong to interrupt her in the middle of her award, yes! Was he right about Beyonce having a better video, yes! He actually apologized to Taylor Swift and made a song about it. George Bush not caring about black people comment, wrong place wrong time. But at that time there a lot of other people thinking the same thing.
I like that he is confident. We tell people "be happy with who you are, be confident, blah blah blah love yourself" but as soon as you have someone like Kanye who actually believes it, people call him a douche, full of himself, egotistic, etc.
The end.

Perhaps Kanye is just helpfully illustrating that we need to rethink that philosophy.

FFS, you don't need to get all worked up about it. I said in my comment that I didn't know where the line was between what you said and applying the same logic to a different situation.
I think Kitchen knows this given that she is close to someone with a disability, as are all the other moms on here who have children that people stare at and make rude comments about. The point is, people are friggan awkward and socially unintelligent, that doesn't make it okay to let stupid shit and ignorance fly out of your face on the regular.
Ok brah (since I'm a dude you can be a brah) all I was saying is that a total stranger saying "you're so big" may very well not be the incredible insult so many take it to be. That's all, as I said earlier, if it is someone you know that is saying the rude, ignorant things that is another story but that one little phrase from someone you have literally never met is probably not meant to take your self-esteem down.

k and I don't care either way for your original statement. I think you overreacted to Kitchen's comment is all. The way you said it was meant to make her feel silly for going there. I disagree.
I think that the public school system needs to do a better job teaching real world skills. After graduating high school, a person should know what a tax return is, what a mortgage is, how interest rates work, and how to budget their finances. Not to mention teach kids a broader spectrum of what kinds of careers are out there. It's embarrassing how long I thought an engineer drove a train.
Also, I had a guy ask me what an investment was the other day. Seriously?

I guess the point is, when is it EVER okay to make a comment like "you're so big" to ANYONE. It's unnecessary. I understand a total stranger might not mean offense by saying it, but it still kind of stings to hear that, when 8 months pregnant or if you feel even 2 pounds overweight when not pregnant.
I think when people on TB comment about stuff like that, it's less "this asshole called me fat" kind of statement and more "can you believe how socially inappropriate this person is making a comment like that."
I agree that in general, many people take offense to things that they would be happier if they let slide. People think that feeling offended is some sort of infringement on their basic rights (it's not, sometimes not everything in life makes you feel like farting rainbows). But I do think that being pregnant is not the most comfortable state to be in sometimes, so your skin thins a bit regarding people's need to comment on your weight, progress, skin texture. etc. It also seems to coincide with the fact that being pregnant seems to make people think these are actually appropriate topics for public conversation with basic strangers. Like a pregnant woman/belly is somehow public property.

Also... home ec and skilled trades!
So many of our students prefer to go into skilled trades and find great careers in those areas. I wish we had the ability to teach more around these areas. Most of our kids don't understand the empirical system, even though we use metric here, if you're doing carpentry or something of the sort, it's all empirical.

Ok, change "choice" to "situation". What works for one family is different for another based on different situations. It's not my "choice" per se that I'm getting ready to become a SAHM but we can't afford three in daycare. So whether by choice, decision or circumstance, it is a personal issue that affects families differently and no one way is the "best" way for all families.
But I dare someone to tell me I'm less of a parent because I worked outside of the home with DD or that I'm somehow lazy or unambitious because I will be SAHM (regardless of why) once the twins are born.
@awc I understand that may not be your personal view, it just came across differently.
No I totally agree with you. You probably said it better than I did actually. It's nobodies place to decide how you run your life and financial circumstances mean that different stuff works for different people. I can't afford to stay off work when my mat pay stops, so will have to go back. If I had my choice, I'd stay home. I don't find fulfilment in the work I do, so I would much rather not do it. The reaction I've had since becoming pregnant has done nothing for my loyalty to the company.

I hate "forced" charity. I belong to a community organization that does very little actual volunteering/community service. I belong because all the other local attorneys/politicians/business people do. (The President Judge in our County actually called me on my second day of work and told me I needed to join) What do we do? Sell tickets (or, in my case, buy the entire pack because I HATE selling things) to stupid spaghetti dinners or pig roasts or basket raffles to support community events. Good in theory, but in practice it just milks the same people over and over. Nobody really wants to go eat crappy spaghetti in a fire hall. I wish they would just ask for a standard donation and get it over with.
Now actual volunteering, for a cause/organization I believe in, I'm totally on board with.
I'm pro-toddler leash. I used one with DD and if needed, I'll use one with this LO.
agree 100%!
When I was about 35ish weeks pregnant with DD, DS1 let go of my hand and raced out the door of the clinic and almost into oncoming traffic- I ran after him, picked him up and ended up in intense pelvic pain for the rest of the day- the next day I bought a leash, and all the children have been on it at one time or another, and this LO will be too. They liked it, it is a little puppy backpack that straps across their chest and the leash hangs from the back. so much less stressful.
My mother got called out for using one with my brother many years ago. She ran into the same woman a few weeks later and she had her kid on a leash. Guess the woman got a scare at some point in-between. IMO there's a whole lot more freedom in the leashes rather than being forced to hold hands. I don't think the kids care.

I agree with this. Right now I am working FT due to financial reasons, and when this baby comes I will be working PT due to finances. I would very much prefer to be a SAHM, and I think a lot of times I feel defensive about certain comments I read because it was not my choice.
Are we really comparing pregnancy and a disability right now??? Not even remotely the same. For the record no, I do not think it is ok for people to make ignorant comments to the disabled...

Perhaps Kanye is just helpfully illustrating that we need to rethink that philosophy.
And I second the FFS. Calm down dude.
k and I don't care either way for your original statement. I think you overreacted to Kitchen's comment is all. The way you said it was meant to make her feel silly for going there. I disagree.
So many of our students prefer to go into skilled trades and find great careers in those areas. I wish we had the ability to teach more around these areas. Most of our kids don't understand the empirical system, even though we use metric here, if you're doing carpentry or something of the sort, it's all empirical.

Now actual volunteering, for a cause/organization I believe in, I'm totally on board with.
EDIT: plus the puppy ones are really cute!
I really enjoyed reading this, very well put! I do agree it's not at all appropriate. Sometimes I forget that not everyone has thick skin like me. Thanks again for a thoughtful post!
