We have been so lucky with how Bennett has slept. He always went down without a fuss and never needed to be put to sleep. He occasionally woke up around 4 or 5 and came to bed with us for a couple of hours which I never minded.
All of a sudden a couple of weeks ago he started screaming when I put him down at night. I tried cry it out but the kid just screams bloody murder for over an hour with no sign of slowing down. If I rock him he will go to sleep but is now waking up between 10 and 12 to come sleep with us. I don't sleep well when he is in our bed and I want him out. It's just horrible how he screams though. I've done cry it out when he was younger and he did fine. This is different. And he screams mama which makes it so much harder.
I tried rocking him in the middle of the night and as soon as I stand up he death grips me and flails and cries when we near is room.
I'm stumped and I'd love some advice. Should I stick it out, will he grow out of it or what have you done that has worked.

It isn't super dark we have a nightlight. I go in to rub him and usually he screams louder which I didn't think was possible

If you don't want to go the CIO route again, I'd maybe try changing up the bedtime routine. DD randomly started refusing all parts of her bedtime routine- singing, reading, etc, so changing it up and finding new ways to help her wind down helped us. Also, I know a lot of people try to limit drinks before bed, but DD goes to sleep with a water sippy because for a while she woke up thirsty, so maybe rule that out?
