Sleep suggestions

We have been so lucky with how Bennett has slept. He always went down without a fuss and never needed to be put to sleep. He occasionally woke up around 4 or 5 and came to bed with us for a couple of hours which I never minded.

All of a sudden a couple of weeks ago he started screaming when I put him down at night. I tried cry it out but the kid just screams bloody murder for over an hour with no sign of slowing down. If I rock him he will go to sleep but is now waking up between 10 and 12 to come sleep with us. I don't sleep well when he is in our bed and I want him out. It's just horrible how he screams though. I've done cry it out when he was younger and he did fine. This is different. And he screams mama which makes it so much harder.

I tried rocking him in the middle of the night and as soon as I stand up he death grips me and flails and cries when we near is room.

I'm stumped and I'd love some advice. Should I stick it out, will he grow out of it or what have you done that has worked.

Is he getting any teeth? DD is normally a good sleeper and I've actually never known she was teething unless I looked for new teeth in her mouth. The most recent teeth are a different story, up multiple times a night miserable.

I would try adjusting bedtime to see if that helps. Does he seem tired at his current bedtime? In the spring/summer the kids have a later bedtime because we play outside after daycare which pushes back dinner and bath. Leo used to go to bed at 7:30 now it is 8.

  • Can you have DH put him down and get a different reaction? That's what worked for us. He would scream and scream if I laid him down. But DH can just tell him to lay down and he does. He just all of a sudden STTN. He's back to waking as we are trying to get rid of the binky. Not as bad as it was though.

  • DH tries and it's the same reaction. He has all of his teeth except his back molars so he could be working on those I guess. His bedtime is about the same each night but I will try adjusting it a bit.

  • Is it bright in his room now that it's lighter later? Blackout blinds are a must for us otherwise she doesn't want to sleep!

  • Let me preface by saying that E was never a great sleeper, so make of that what you will. hahaha.

We have found that during really clingy periods, he'll wake up and be really upset. For us, he calms down just seeing us, so DH will go and sit in the nursing recliner in E's room. He cried for him to pick him up the first couple nights, but DH just rubbed his little head and helped him lie down. Now he sees DH, gets tucked back in, and will go back to bed. Something about knowing that we are there.
(I send DH in because if it's me he gets all "milk milk milk mamamamamama milk milk.")

  • Two thoughts: is it super dark? Maybe try a nightlight? Or try going in but not picking him up. Help him lay down, rub his hair or back or butt or whatever

It isn't super dark we have a nightlight. I go in to rub him and usually he screams louder which I didn't think was possible

  • How do you do CIO with him- extinction, or with longer and longer periods between check-ins?  Maybe if you tried it one way, the other could help?  We initially did CIO with check-ins when DD was a baby, but now it's extinction every night.  (She seems to need to fuss herself to sleep, as she has never gone to sleep without a little fussing.)

If you don't want to go the CIO route again, I'd maybe try changing up the bedtime routine.  DD randomly started refusing all parts of her bedtime routine- singing, reading, etc, so changing it up and finding new ways to help her wind down helped us.  Also, I know a lot of people try to limit drinks before bed, but DD goes to sleep with a water sippy because for a while she woke up thirsty, so maybe rule that out?

  • M&M is a great sleeper unless she has a tooth coming in. If there's a tooth she will wake up crying for me and freaks out when I try and put her back in the bed. I usually give her a cup of milk and tylenol if I think she really needs it and it seems to do the trick.
