Moms with scoliosis...

So a little background..Since I was 12 up until I was about 17 I was monitored and x rayed once a year for pretty dramatic scoliosis (slight double thoracic). By the time I was 17 my curve was at a degree where they would consider putting rods in my back, but didn't have to because I was done growing. My question for any moms with scoliosis is, does it get worse as we get closer to delivery? I'm actually pleasantly surprised that my back is not hurting nearly as bad as I expected. Pretty sharp lower back pain around my tail bone, painful laying down on hard flat surfaces (feels like my back is going to break if I move my legs!) and typical back pain if I'm on it for too long. But nothing to seriously complain about. Should I seek some kind of adjustment? Should I expect it to get worse. I try to stretch it, but certain stretches hurt and I really have no idea what a good back stretch could be.

  • I have mild scoliosis- s curve- that never required any intervention or treatment. I was worried about it acting up more during pregnancy as well. In my last pregnancy I had some severe, bone-grinding lower back pain towards the end but I don't think that was due to my scoliosis- more likely it was the way the baby was positioned. This time, I'm 39 weeks and haven't had any back pain. Also, I was concerned about my scoliosis affecting my ability to get an epidural or how effective it was. I was told by multiple anesthesiologists that it wouldn't be an issue, but my epidural did not work (only worked on one side). May have been due to my scoliosis, may not have been. I have no way to know....but I do plan on getting an epi again this time, so maybe I'll have better luck this time!

I was also really concerned about my scoliosis affecting my epidural also. I guess it's something I should ask my doctor next time I go in... Good to know you aren't dealing with a lot of back pain. I was really worried about that

Ditto this exactly. I've had bone grinding at the end of all 3 pregnancies. My epidural worked effectively for my vaginal birth, but it did take some extra time and precision to get it into the right spot. At least that's what I was told ;)

  • I have very mild scoliosis that never needed treatment. My spine curves slightly about where the epidural needs goes in, so I actually was able to set up a quick meeting with an anesthesiologist to see if there would be a problem (I got lucky because he was actually the same one who did my epidural). That would be my suggestion.

  • Ive had the opposite experience. My scoliosis is caused 100% by breaking my back/compressed vertebrae from an accident at 17. The doctors didnt notice my curve was as severe as it was until it was too late to insert the balloons and try to uncompress the vertebrae, so Im stuck this way. Ive has pretty intense pain starting about 6 weeks ago (Im 32 weeks now) and it wont go away no matter what. Sitting on an exercise ball helps some. Because the curve and slight rotation of my right side, my torso is a bit "wrong shaped", and the baby has decided to dislocate 2 ribs. Doctor wont put them back because it will just happen again. The next 8 weeks certainly wont be fun, but at least I know after delivery it wont be so bad!

you probably have a lot more pain because you broke your back. Not saying your scoliosis has nothing to do with it, but I would think the fact that your broke your back has a hugeeeee affect on you

  • My best friend has a moderate case of scoliosis and never had any major issues during pregnancy except for what she called normal aches and pains. The only issue she did have was with her epidurals. They would only make half of her numb. She had three kids, and none of them worked.
  • I have mild scoliosis - in addition I have sciatic nerve damage - The pain that I have had during this pregnancy seems to be pretty normal. I have found like PP have said, that the chiropractor I see helps a lot. I only go to see him ever 4-6 weeks, I think that makes a big difference!

  • Thank you all for sharing. Good to know I might be in luck. Like I said, so far everything seems to be pretty normal and now too bad. Only when I'm on my feet for too long

  • I have really bad scoliosis and had corrective surgery. I have three curves the largest was 72 degrees. They fused from the back of my neck to my low back. My LO is almost 3 weeks. At the end of the pregnancy my low back was pretty sore mostly bc of nerve damage. At the hospital the anesthesiologist was not really positive that the epepisode would work. But boy did it!My labor was all back labor unfortunately I think it was due to getting wires crossed when they were digging around back there.
