  • Thank you both! That makes me feel a lot better! I was wondering if I could tell them I didn't want to see the needle, lol,

I bought this PNP to keep in our room. Can she just sleep in the napper piece the first few weeks? https://m.target.com/p/graco-pack-n-play-playard-with-reversible-napper-and-changer/-/A-15078293

    Also curious about this!

  • The idea of the epidural needle scared me so much. It was no problem at all. I did not want to see anything(needle), and I'm sure that helped me. I actually felt the IV was more "painful" since the nurse doing it was having issues. The catheter was a little icky feeling at first, too, but didn't hurt. Nothing was painful compared the contractions or when it was time to push. (My epi was strange with dd, and seemed to work better with ds. Ultimately worth it and wonderful in my experience.). :)

  • @wtfisup‌ and @lest12‌ , yes, you can use napper for the first couple weeks. C slept i n hers just about all day if I wasn't holding her for the first few weeks and she turned out fine!

  • Does everyone get a catheter during labor???  I've heard a few people bring this up and wasn't sure if it depended on dr or what... thanks!

Yeah I wonder...I mean how do you pee?
I *think* you only get one if you have an epidural since you can no longer get up and walk around. if you are just labor ing without an epidural i don't see why you couldn't go to the bathroom regularly but I'm not sure on this. I had an epidural so I had a catheter.
  • @stephross88 That makes sense and crossed my mind as I was thinking about it... thanks!

I was lucky {sarcasm} enough to see the epidural catheter in my Childbirth 101 class.  They passed around all the gadgets that might be used during labor/delivery.  Vacuum, huge BBQ tongs, I mean... forceps, internal fetal monitor, intrauterine pressure catheter, etc.  It was quite interesting.

Oh no. No no no no no.

  • Thanks everyone for all the NIP suggestions. I'm really kind of hoping both LO and I will get used to the process quickly. I have a feeling if I'm not stressed by the actual BF, NIP also won't be a big deal. And I'm thinking maybe a nursing cover just isn't for me, at least until I see how things actually go. Follow up question: when buying nursing tanks for immediately PP (say month one or two), how do you choose a size? Is it like buying maternity clothes? I've put on all my weight on the boobs and belly... For how long will I need to still accommodate the belly PP?

A childbirth question - how crazy is the epidural? I've always been of the "drug me up and let me feel no pain" mindset, but the other day I somehow "remembered" tgat I don't like needles. Now I'm scared. Is it comoletely intimidating? I'm afraid to Google.
I'll be totally honest and say it was awful to get. I cried. But it was over super fast and didn't hurt once it was done.

ETA the anesthesiologist was hotttttttttt, which helped ;)

edit 2: I also wasn't in labor and had just found out about 12 minutes before that my child would be born that day. So take my opinion with a grain of salt. I feel like I might have scared you and that was not my intention!!

It wasn't as bad as I thought. You can't see much since they're doing it all from behind. my DH was allowed to stay in the room. They positioned him on a stool infront of me. The dr expalined every single step she took as she did it. So, there were no surprises, I knew when to feel some pressure, what to expect. It was instant relief for me. I could still feel my legs, wiggle my toes, it just took the horrible painful edge off the contractions for me.

I did not have a catheter with my epidural or anytime during labor.

I think it depends on how big chested you are. I'm a pretty average frame. Pre pg I wore a 34DDD and went up a bit in size during my pregnancy...once my milk came in my boobs were just too big for Target nursing tanks, Motherhood, etc. I bought a Bravado one and thought it was so unsupportive and gave me the worst uniboob. The only brand that worked for me was Glamourmom. I used their sizing chart and bought a M (I got sized for nursing bras and was sized at a 36G or something crazy like that). But, those tanks were heaven sent. I felt supported and not a hot frumpy mess with my boobs sagging. I layered over a tee shirt or another tank in the first weeks and even was able to wear them in public

@lest12‌ and you don't even see the needle. The worst part for me was trying to focus on staying still while I was getting the epidural and having a contraction at the same time. My anesthesiologist was cracking jokes the whole time, so that helped me relax.

This was the hard part for me too- sitting so still during your contractions. It's a big pinch and then you feel the cold from the meds.

  • FTM here, but we did discuss catheters in my birthing class.  From what I recall, catheters are used only when you get an epidural, like PPs have said.  However, there are two different types of catheters--one is removable and the other is more permanent.  Our instructor said that it really depends on how long your labor is expected to take whether you get one type versus the other--they don't want to insert/remove a catheter more than a few times, so if you're progressing slowly (or have your epidural REALLY early), they'll likely use the permanent one.  Otherwise, they may be able to just use a removable one as needed to drain your bladder.

I thought Bravado bras and tanks were terrible! I feel like people recommended them left and right...they felt like cheap sports bras

I'm a big proponent of getting fitted at a bra shop, nordstroms etc and underwire nursing bras. They saved me. I felt awful about the size of my chest post baby.

I never saw the needle or remember feeling it...the contractions were bad enough that them putting the epidural in was nothing.
I totally agree. I was freaked out about it going in but at that point it was nothing. I remember thinking "was that all" once they were done but maybe my pain scale was changed at that point by the contractions. My epidural didn't work well at all and yet I still am going to do it again on the HOPE that it works this time so that should give you an idea of how it really was no big deal.

  • What time of day and where were you when you went into labor and decided to go to the hospital?  How were your early contractions?  Still light enough to drive?  Or did you have the zero to water break/labor experience?  Since I'm planning to work pretty much up until I go into labor, I'm trying to strategize how I'll make my way to the hospital just in case I'm not at home.
  • @lest12 I was terrified of the epidural. It was the absolute last thing I wanted, but pitocin is a bitch and I couldn't hang after about 9 hours. It didn't hurt to get, in my experience, it was just hard to hold still. They did let me lay on my side so that was nice. But the stupid thing only worked on the left half of my body. So it took the edge off, but didn't numb me completely. I could still move my legs and roll over by myself.
  • I am "due" May 20th.  What is the likelihood that I will have given birth and be home before June 1?  I need to make an insurance decision on this time frame.

They came up with my due date via early ultrasound at 8 weeks, not my LMP.  At my appointments, I have been measuring right on track to the week that I am in.  Not sure if any of this really matters.

@Kinipela7 Hey LB... I would ask your dr.  Mine said she absolutely will not go more than a week past my due date.  So I know for sure that I will have a LO by June 8!  I guess June 9 or 10 if labor really sucks, but I am trying to think positively!

I went exactly one week late. I would talk to your dr. It seems from what I've read on TK and FB groups and having a kiddo not too long ago that alot of drs tendto induce after 1 week. Personally, I wouldn't make that decision unless it was medically necessary..but that's a whole different argument

As you get closer and you're seen weekly etc and if you have internals, your dr will be able to tell you if youre dialted etc and probably give you a better idea

With my first, my first contractions came around 1 or 2 am. I laboured on my own (I didn't want to wake DH up) very well until around 4 or 5 am when I was starting to have trouble during them. I could have driven at that point but I probably wouldn't choose to do that. I laboured at home until 11:30 that morning before heading in to the hospital. There is no way I could have driven myself at that point.

My second was a precipitous labour and there is no way I would have been driving at any point during the 65 minutes it took for DS to make his entrance. I have had nightmares about being in the car/at work or by myself with my kids when my water breaks this time. Just cause it was so fast last time.  But that is not typically the case.

Especially first time labours tend to have plenty of build up and warning. You should be just fine wherever you are. I have friends that went into early labour at work and drove themselves to the hospital easily enough. my best advice would be to listen to your body. If you are feeling crampy or lots of back pain, then head home and rest for a bit to see if it goes away.

  • @pepper6 @lizardbreath14‌ I worked up until my water broke. I'm not sure if it is possible for you, but I did work from home the week before my due date. My water broke at home at 8:30PM and I didn't start having hard contractions till 2 AM.
  • So the TDAP. My doctor has got me scared to death to let anyone around baby that I don't know if they have it or not. I got the vaccine today at 30 weeks. Does anyone have experience with making your family get it, what risks there are to people just holding the baby for a minute? Everyone will be in and out of the hospital I'm sure visiting and wanting to hold the baby. But I know the doc wants all primary care people of the baby to have it. Basically anyone have an info at all to offer up on this?

I had the zero to water break... to 4 cm dilated by the time I got to the hospital.... baby born only a few hours later but I accept that I am weird. The odds really of it breaking at all are less than 15 percent and before 37 weeks less than 3 percent so I have to feel I had some type of infection or something that was never diagnosed. BUT even with that experience it was 2am so it was no big deal. I probably wouldn't have wanted to drive but everyone progresses at a different rate. I plan on working right up to the delivery again and while I'll have backup clothes and I know I could ask my work friends to drive me I feel pretty confident that either
    A) It won't happen when I am at work. I only spend roughly 14% of my time at work (40 hrs out of the 280 hrs in a week)
    B) I'll start with gradual contractions and be fine to get home then DH can drive me to the hospital when they are more like every 5 minutes

Try not to stress, you could go late and have to be enduced and this is all a moot point.

  • wtfisup We got the same one! I think technically you could and it would be totally fine, but the "Baby Bargains" book doesn't recommend it because it's plush and soft, and some studies have linked higher rates of SIDS to soft, plushy beds and fabrics. (I totally bastardized that - I'm sure someone else can phrase that explanation in a more sophisticated way!)

  • @nutmegs8‌ you should check with your hospital... ours does accommodate women coming from a distance (I asked because we live 40 minutes away, which isn't actually considered that far here, but there are hospitals closer to us). Also, I have heard that if you need to go to the hospital during rush hour or in other heavy traffic you can get a Highway Patrol escort. My friend who did that lives in a different town, but I plan to find out if they do that here!

I am really small to start with, just really petit... I was a 34B (and that looked big enough!) pre-pregnancy and I've gone up to a 36C. I have no idea what to expect, but I sure hope I don't reach a G or beyond because I don't think my frame could support it. After I start BF I will get sized, but I figure I will want something on hand for right after giving birth.

Apparently, they do at our hospital.  They also said that if they did use them, you can expect an episiotomy.

    Also, next question...

I believe I heard that recovery for a natural tear is easier than that of an episiotomy? Is there a choice in the matter? Can you say no?
Ugh, this is the question I've been scared to ask.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • @PressLove - YES! Essential for pukey nights, blowouts, etc. Remember your baby will be a toddler one day and they will get stomach bugs and potty train. DD is overnight training right now and we're going through lots of sheets and waterproof liners. If you have an ikea nearby, they sell them for like $5.

@nutmeg8 - You can definitely refuse them. It's on my birth plan to refuse.
  • Re labor: My water broke during sex on a Saturday afternoon. Since I was planning med-free, I was worried they would start me on pitocin. I showered, ate a big, homemade power/granola bar and drank 2 bottles of coconut water. About 45 minutes after my water broke, contractions started. The drive to the hospital is 45 minutes and I'm glad I wasn't driving, though I'm pretty sure I could have. Ended up going into labor quickly and had DD less than 6 hours later.

At the time, I worked about 70 minutes from the my hospital. The plan was always to work from home if I felt off or contraction-y. If I happened to go into labor while there, one of my friends would have driven me since it would have taken DH an hour to get there from his job. Honestly, I don't think my body would have been relaxed enough to go into labor at work.
  • I use a mattress cover for DD, I would consider it essential for nights when you have diaper leakage or a pukey baby.  I'd rather just replace it than try to wash the mattress.  As long as it's waterproof I don't think it matters which one you get.
