Cut from pump

I seemed to be having trouble finding the correct flange size and have torn up my breasts. I finally got the right side healed but now I have an even worse cut on my left. Every time I pump or BF it breaks open. Does anyone have advise on how to get this to heal quickly?

Re: Cut from pump

  • I've always greased the flanges with coconut oil every time I pump. It's the only way I was able to comfortably pump.

  • Hmm I never thought of that. Maybe I can load up on Lanolin before.

  • Put breast milk on your sore breast and maybe ask an LC to help you with flange size? Ouch!

  • I tried lanolin first, but it was still too sticky in the flanges. Pumping was so painful when I first went back to work, until I discovered coconut oil. It eliminates all friction.
  • Ok I'll give coconut oil a try. This cut that I have now is horrible. It keeps bleeding and drying up an getting stuck to the breast pad. Then it reopens when I unstick it and pump

  • I second the coconut oil! When I had cracked nipples, I put it on after every pump and it helped heal them, avoid infection, and sooth the pain. I also put it in before pumping and it let them move freely in the flange- couldn't believe how great it felt compared to the terrible pain of opening the cracks with each suck. Good luck!

  • Make sure you put coconut oil/lanolin on before putting on breast pads. Reapply generously during the day. Try Soothies.

  • I'm a fan of lanolin. Ask a LC to help you with the right size flange, or maybe a LLL meeting if cost is an issue.
