Wide awake during night

I am exhausted (as I'm sure everyone is). LO is 5 weeks old and the last week has started a trend that is killing me. At 9pm, we feed her about 3oz and she's asleep in 20 minutes. She wakes up about midnight and again, eat 3oz and asleep in 20. Then comes 2:30am... She stays WIDE awake for 2 hours, will eat about 1oz every 20ish minutes, for a total of 5oz and then falls asleep around 4:30. During this time, she acts te same as her 2 awake periods that she has during the day; interested in things going on, wants to be held/bounced/rocked, fussy, etc. Anyone have any suggestions on how to convince her that 2:30am is not a good time to party? I thought about putting her back to bed after 20 minutes, but she would just be up again to eat more. Is it just par for the course?

Re: Wide awake during night

  • We have a different routine at night, which helps. During the day, she eats, plays, sleeps. Change before eating. Usually all of that is done out in the living room- music on, sun shining in. Night time (9pm feeding), we dim the lights, close the blackout curtains, and turn on the white noise. We only change, eat, sleep at night. And we don't leave her room. The first few nights were rough, but it's better now. If she is awake after eating, we still put her back to bed. Usually, she is content sucking on her paci, and will go to sleep on her own.

We have been doing this since week 1, but only have been having regular success with it since about 4-5weeks. She is now 8 weeks, and usually sleeps 9:30p-5:30 or 6a.

  • My girl does this too, 2-430am party time!
It will pass, and pretty quickly. Until then, make yourself a cup of tea and enjoy the babbles and smiles. Coffee is your friend in the mornings!
  • Are you FF or BFing? How often does she eat during the day?

First, I'd suggest that you make sure she doesn't go more than 3 hours or so between feedings during the day. Wake her up if she's sleeping. Maybe you're already doing this.

Second, one thing that really helped our little one sleep longer at night in the early weeks was to intentionally cluster feed him at night. Starting 3-4 hours before bedtime, feed her every hour to hour & half or so, even if she's not asking for it. This will help her "top off her tank," so to speak, for bedtime so that her body doesn't tell her she needs more calories.

Of course, she will likely still wake up in the MOTN but hopefully less often. HTH.

  • I distinctly remember during week 4 we had the exact same issue. All of a sudden after his 2 am feeding it was impossible to get him to go back to sleep for 1.5 - 2 hours. No amount of nursing, rocking, singing or bouncing could get him to close his eyes.

It lasted a handful of days as I recall. He sorted it out somehow once he realized we weren't partying and there was nothing to see. I never turned on any lights or left the room. I wanted him to know that nothing but sleeping and eating happens when it's night time.
