Well, that's shitty...zantac stopped working and prevacid is going to take THREE.FREAKING.DAYS

My LO has reflux and was put on Zantac  two weeks ago. Three days after starting Zantac the incessant, blood curdling screams stopped and he started only crying three to fours hours a day. Until Tuesday that is. Almost overnight he became super fussy again. Yesterday evening he began screaming like a banshee. I was able to get him seen by the pediatrician and sure enough "sometimes Zantac just stops working/" She then put him on Prevacid and told me "he should start being better in THREE DAYS." I wanted to cry when she told me that this will go on for three more days. I haven't slept, he is inconsolable and I am exhausted. He has been crying and screaming incessantly ALL.DAY.LONG. Any suggestions? Anybody else dealing with this?

  • :( you poor thing. Im so sorry you and your poor baby are dealing with this. I do not have any advice, just empathy, as I know how stressful and hopeless that screaming can make you feel. At least you know the problem, keep reminding yourself that it will end soon. Hugs!!

  • So sorry! I can only think of the standard keep him upright, paced feedings etc. I am sure you have tried it all. No further advice but do hope it does not take a full 3 days to feel better.
  • I can't even imagine how tough it must be to have an inconsolable baby and hear that it can take three days for the Prevacid to kick in. Hang in there, mama!

  • thanks for being so supportive guys. I know that it isn't the biggest problem in the world and three days isn't an eternity...it's just so hard watching LO scream in pain and I am so, so tired at this point.
  • Just echoing PPs. Hang in there, and ask someone to give you some breaks if you can. I hope the next few days go quickly and that Prevacid is the ticket to sleep.
  • I'm so sorry. No advice just ((hugs))

  • When you've been dealing with a baby with reflux, 3 days does seem like an eternity. It's so hard to watch them in pain and there's not really anything you can do until it passes. But it does get better. My experience was that things did get a little better right away when we started giving her the Prevacid. It wasn't completely gone immediately, but DD didn't scream like she was. She was still uncomfortable for a few days. But eventually, it made a big difference.
  • Hang in there mama. Can you call. Friend or family member to come over and help for a couple hours? You need a break! (Even though it hard to take one when LO is crying)
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

    Mom to Lily and Colin!
  • So sorry, I just can't imagine and I hope that LO feels better soon! I would see if you could get someone to watch him so you could get a short break. (((Hugs)))
  • I am in the same situation and totally feel your pain, frustration, exhaustion, anger, heartbreak, etc... In our case the zantac never worked. We are starting day 2 (2 1/2- she got one dose the first day) on Prevacid. I can't tell if it is helping or not. She does seem to fall asleep pretty soon after taking a dose- so maybe it at least allows her enough peace to sleep?
I don't know if you have tried it but my LO loves taking baths. I think the warm water helps somehow, plus her baby bath keeps her in the upright inclined position that she likes so much. It doesn't help for long but it does seem to give me a few minutes of quiet and her a few minutes of peace/pain relief. When she has been screaming for so many hours on end, even a few minutes of peace and her out of pain is glorious!
I really hope your little on starts to feel better soon! Hang in there and know that you are not alone and that somehow, I am not sure how yet, this will get better!!!

We are on day one of Zantac. I was just reading back into the archives. Did your LO get any relief from the Prevacid? Are you doing rice cereal in the formula in addition? I also noticed baths do help
The Prevacid has definitely made it better, but he is still crying a lot (not as much as normal). So, the Prevacid has reduced the amount of crying, but not eliminated it entirely. It's difficult to know if this means that the Prevacid has failed to entirely eliminate the reflux or if this means that reflux was only part of our LO's problem and that the remaining crying is due to temperament/colic.

As far as rice in the cereal, different pediatricians feel differently about this for reflux babies. Rice in the cereal is always a no no for non-reflux babies, but some pedis think that the benefits of rice (thickening the formula) outweigh the risks (obesity later in life, constipation). My mom is a retired pediatrician and she recommended rice for reflux babies. My pediatrician does not recommend rice for reflux babies. So you should check with your pediatrician regarding rice. I may have put a little rice in my LOs nighttime formula in the 3 days it took for the Prevacid to start working
;) but I discontinued the use as soon as the medicine kicked in.
