Tiny Baby Check-In

PixiesDustPixiesDust member
edited April 2014 in October 2013 Moms
It's becoming more and more apparent to me that DD is on the petite side.  I never really realized this until I started seeing all these weight, diaper size, and clothing size polls.  She'll be 6 months on Wednesday and is probably around 15-15.5 lbs (official weigh in is Thursday at her 6 mo appt.).  This puts her somewhere between the 30th-40th percentile for weight, so IMO, average.  But i can't help but worry just a little since so many babies (here and who I know IRL) seem to be huge in comparison.

I'm curious to know, for those who have babies on the smaller side:
How old is your LO
Boy or Girl
How much do they weigh
how much is your LO eating per day
what size diapers are they wearing
what size clothing are they wearing
Mostly bottle (formula or BM) or breast (i'm actually really curious about this)
Any other pertinent info/concerns/etc?

DD is pretty average sized now, but she was on the small side for quite a while. She had some weight loss issues and dropped off the growth charts early on, but she's been back on track and gaining nicely since around six weeks. At her four month appointment she was just about 13 pounds. I'm not sure what she is now but I'd guess in the 15 pound range. She's mostly in 3-6 month clothes, although I feel like they are starting to get snug. We cloth diaper, but MIL uses disposables when she watches her. Pretty sure she's a two. She'll be six months April 17th and she eats 24- 30 ounces a day.

Eta- formula fed only. Boob failure was final about a month ago. No solids yet. But probably going to get off our asses and start this week. Also, sorry for the jumbled response. I had no sort of order answering questions, did I?!

I'm all sorts of confused now.
    Lo is 15.5 lbs
    Size 3 diaper
Size 9mo clothes pushing 12 mo sleepers. So if we are going by weight, then I'm #teamtiny but if we are going by sizes then I'm too confused to play. I think she's a chunk, but everybody tells me how tiny she is and how much younger she looks cause she is so small... Idk she looks more than fine to me :-?
Eta: I'm tired and my eyes can't proof read
  • DD is 5 months old (just turned on 3-23)
    A girl
in size 1 - 2 diapers. I buy size 2 but they are too big
she is in 0-3 month clothing
she weighs not even 12 pounds. (11 pounds 10 oz)
She feeds 6-7 times a day exclusively breast.

There is nothing abnormal or anything like that. She was 8 pounds at birth. She is hitting all her milestones and Dr isnt worried. DD1 was the complete opposite and huge and had so Many rolls. Always off the chart for weight. DD2 is like 3.58% for weight.

Mostly bottle (formula or BM) or breast (i'm actually really curious about this) 50/50 formula/breastmilk through both bottle and breast
Any other pertinent info/concerns/etc? I have no concerns, she's developing normally. She's rolled belly to back but not the reverse, and hit all other milestones. I just ordered 12-18 mo clothes! She's cloth diapered mostly so those add some extra bulk. She started growing more rapidly when I started supplementing with formula. That is a fact.

  • How old is your LO - 6 mo on 4/5
    Boy or Girl - girl
How much do they weigh - maybe 13-14 lbs? Will know tomorrow!
how much is your LO eating per day - 50/50 formula- BM, between pumped-formula 24 oz plus BF 2-3x, 1/3 jar of solids with dinner
what size diapers are they wearing - 2
what size clothing are they wearing - 3, 3-6
Mostly bottle (formula or BM) or breast
    Both
    Any other pertinent info/concerns/etc?
I was worried for the first 2 months, we were at 3% and now I'm happy whatever size she is as long as it's healthy. Last appt she was 8%. She sits unsupported and is hitting all the other milestones, so I'm chill now.
  • DD came home at 4 lb 14 oz so about 10%. Here she is now:
How old is your LO. 6 months on 10/19
    Boy or Girl. Girl
How much do they weigh. About 15 lbs
How much is your LO eating per day. 30 ozs
What size diapers are they wearing. Just start pampers swaddlers 3
what size clothing are they wearing. Mostly 3-6 mo but some 6-9.
Mostly bottle (formula or BM) or breast. All formula now. Was all breast milk from the bottle for 2 months and then 1/2 form 1/2 bm for the next 2. I always had supply issues so I always pumped to ensure she always got enough. Gaining was important since she was so small to begin with.

    Boy or Girl - Girl
How much do they weigh - almost 16lbs
how much is your LO eating per day - BF (about 7-10 x day) I think she has a few big meals throughout the day but lots if snacks in between. Its hard to tell how much she really eats.
what size diapers are they wearing - 2
what size clothing are they wearing - 6 months
Mostly bottle (formula or BM) or breast (i'm actually really curious about this) -
Any other pertinent info/concerns/etc? Born 1wk early , I have started solids but she is playing more than eating!

Edit: My pedi did say she wanted her to gain more weight after her 4month apt. (Which she did) I tried not to stress to much over that .... Keeping in mind that the month prior she had RSV and hadn't gained much weight.

She is hitting all her milestones

  • I don't think DD is a tiny baby, but a lot of people say she's tiny, because she is tall ish. I think she's similar size to Aisling though @PixiesDust‌

    6 months on 4/14
    Girl
    15 lbs 8 oz (27 inches long)
She eats about 30 oz a day and has about 6 tsp of baby food a day
    She wears size 2s comfortably
Depends on brand- 0-3 Circo, 3 month (6 month Carter's fit but are pretty loose), 3 month Gap, 3-6 month Old Navy
    Formula fed from birth

    imageimage

  • DD will be 6 months on 4/17
    She weighs between 13.5-14lbs
    Size 2 diapers
    6 month in clothes
She eats between 32-36 oz of BM from a bottle a day
No worries here, hitting all her milestones she's just a little peanut!
  • LO will be 7 mos on Thursday

Just weighed in yesterday at 15.4...still hasn't doubled his birth weight

    Size 3 diapers

    6 mos clothing

Eats 32-36 oz of formula a day

Dr is a little concerned. He's not eating solids well because of his cleft palate and still has difficulties with his bottle at times. We're trying to give him pedia sure mixed with oatmeal and fruit in place of one feeding to up his calorie intake. He did ok last night with it. We'll see how it goes.
  • How old is your LO: 5.5 months (10/17)
    Boy or Girl: Girl
How much do they weigh: 13lbs? Possibly 14.
How much is your LO eating per day: she eats 6-8 times a day I think?
What size diapers are they wearing? I use cloth, but she fits in size one disposable.
What size clothing are they wearing? Without cloth diapers 0-3, with size 3-6
Mostly bottle (formula or BM) or breast: Breastfed
Any other pertinent info/concerns/etc? She's just teeny like I was. She's an awesome eater and rolls all over the place/sits up. She's just smallish. She's kept on her curve, though (12%)

  • CJ is 6 months and he weighs 13 lbs 10 oz. He is breastfed (~10x/day?) and in addition we are gradually doing more solids (BLW). Clothing varies, anywhere from 3-6 months and he currently sports a size 2 diaper. I have accepted his size and he is in good health and temperament and hitting milestones so I am not worried.

    Boy or Girl -- boy
How much do they weigh -- was 16 lbs 5 oz 3.5 weeks ago
how much is your LO eating per day -- 24-28oz and some oatmeal & purees daily
what size diapers are they wearing -- size 3
what size clothing are they wearing -- 6-9 mo onesies (just switched) 3-6 mo pants
Mostly bottle (formula or BM) or breast -- all formula since 8 weeks old
Any other pertinent info/concerns/etc? Left hospital at 4 lb 7 oz. I think he's doing well, pedi's not concerned but I get comments from strangers that he's small. A lady guessed he was 4.5 months on Sunday. He's all over the place with milestones.

LO will be 6 months on April 18th

13 pounds as of a few weeks ago
She wears CD during the day but size 1 pampers at night

Wearing mostly 6 month clothing (I often wonder if my tiny baby fit in 6 month clothes at 4 months who wears them at 6?)

She has only had breast milk and just started playing with some solids, maybe 1 oz a day. I'd guess usually 22-28 ounces BM a day. Down to 1-2 poopy diapers and like 8 wet ones.

Ella's in the 10% for height and weight and her pediatrician has never had any concerns about her size. Tiny but perfect I say :-)

I also get asked if she's 3 months all the time. Cracks me up, it doesn't usually bug me but I think that's because we've been fortunate enough to not have to worry about weight issues or supply too much. I know for mommas working on LO's weight it gets old fast.

I agree.  No one ever guesses right and they always tell me how tiny she is.  Yes, I know.  My SIL always comments on it whenever we see her because she had chubby babies and she is concerned about DD.  She commented that "she is fattening up finally" this weekend
concur, you know you have an issue when you hear "was she premature?" "oh she FINALLY looks healthy" ;)
All of this.  I never thought anything about her size because she's hitting and exceeding milestones, but friends with babies who are DD's age or even younger have started to comment about how she's such a peanut.  My SIL, who's son is a year old and has always been huge, made a well-meaning but slightly irritating comment the other day about how she can't beleive DD is still in size one diapers and bets she'll will be below 25% for weight at her 6 month appt.  She didn't mean anything by it, she's not that kind of person, but it just rubbed me the wrong way.

They always think B was premature too especially because she was a NICU baby.
i thought we were doing really good (weight wise) been getting compliments how she is filling out. went grocery shopping and had her sit in the seat, im strolling around proud as punch and a lady stops me "was she premature" "nope, a few days late" (with a silent "bitch" added onto the end of the sentence)

  • LO is 5 1/2 months.
She weighed 12 lb 8 oz at her last appointment at 5 months, putting her at 4%
She gets around 32 oz of formula a day now, some days she's ravenous and takes more, other days, not so much.
She's in size 2 diapers now, just because she pees a lot and was leaking out of the size 1. They still fit on her really well, she just needed more absorbency.
She still fits in some of her NB clothes, but we dress her in 3-6 most of the time even though they're a bit big on her. It just makes us feel better, like she's not so behind.
She's on formula only now. She was EBF for 4 months, then we started supplementing and transitioned away from the breast completely this past week. It's a difficult transition for me, but she's been doing a lot better since we put her on formula. She also gets some solids (cereal and purees).

She is hitting her milestones, just a little behind on sitting but not to the point where it's a concern yet. I've noticed a lot more development in the past few weeks once she started gaining weight.

We still get the, "she's so tiny!", "was she premature?", etc. comments. And they still bug me, but now that she's back on the curve her doctor is less concerned. She's had a slew of labwork done and she's healthy, just small, so I try to not let it get to me when the whole world seems to feel the need to point out that my baby is smaller than average.

what size clothing are they wearing- 0-3 and sometimes 6 month for sleepers months
Breast milk in bottles at daycare and breast at home
Any other pertinent info/concerns/etc? Dr. has no weight gain concerns.  She eats at least every 4 hours - including at night.

  • 6 months old today
    Girl
    ~13 lbs (i'm guessing...our appointment is Thursday; was 11#7 at 5 months)
    Breastfed 8x/day, 2 tbs solids 2x/day
    Size 2 diaper
    0-3 month/3 month clothing
Mostly breastfed, rarely receives bottle and never gets formula.

I'm worrying less these days. She's happy and healthy. Just little and that's ok.

I got "oh I thought she was like 6 weeks old" a couple weeks ago.

But by far the weirdest comment I got was maybe a month or so ago. Someone asked me how old she was so I said four months. She was probably around 11lbs at the time.

They reply with, "Oh. My baby is six months and smaller than that."

I though it was super weird. Like the little baby competition or something. Evidently I lose.

Ok never mind... We had our appointment today and LO is only 12 lbs 3 oz. At this point the doctor is now becoming concerned. She has fallen off the growth chart. This has been such a struggle from day 1. I thought we were finally making progress but now we are back to worrying. So frustrated. The good news is everything else was great.

Edited because iPhone keyboards suck... I'm in a pissy mood.
  • oh i am sorry @aggieash23 that is so frustrating. things have been going so good for us (i think she feels heavier) and now she has a GI bug and not keeping anything down. just when you think you are out of the woods.

what are your/their thoughts on formula? i dont want to discourage you from BFing if that is what you want, but as soon as i started that it helped tremendously. how about solids have you started that?

Thank you @carriet2018‌ . I used to be hell bent on absolutely no formula, breast is best, but after today I'm just wanting our girl to get on the charts and not worry about her weight!!! I'll do whatever we need to. I'm thinking of breast feeding still and supplementing with formula. Is this what you did? We have started solids and she loves to eat but I was limiting how much she had to just a small amount so she woks still nurse. The doctor said to nurse then let her eat as much as she wants as long as she still nurses normally after. So we will start that.

how much is your LO eating per day -- 12-16oz at school, and 3-4 feedings before and after school via breast.  He also wakes up 2-3 times at night, and I'll feed him, but I think its more of a comfort thing, I don't believe he is drinking a lot. (whole 'nother issue!)
what size diapers are they wearing -- size 2 Luvs
what size clothing are they wearing -- depends on the brand.  He can still fit in 3-6 months Gap, but mainly is wearing 6-9 month.
Mostly bottle (formula or BM) or breast -- BM - combo bottle/breast
Any other pertinent info/concerns/etc? He had really plateaued at the 4 month mark, making me REALLY nervous that he was too small, but the Dr. was not concerned.  She was quite pleased with his growth from 4-6 months.  Phew!

  • @AggieAsh23 *hugs*

I started supplementing with formula a week before her 4 month appointment, because I couldn't pump enough when I was at work. At that point, I was only making up the difference in her bottles, and still BFing when I was home. At her 4 month appointment, she had dropped off the chart. So then I started giving a 2 oz bottle of formula after each feeding, and we did weekly appointments. It took over a month for her to get back onto the chart, 4%, but I'll take it as a victory. In that month, I weaned her from the breast, so she's on formula only now. It was a hard decision and I still feel bad about it, I'm definitely mourning the loss of our BFing relationship.

  • @carriet2018‌ and @BrittanyCupcakes‌ thank you for the encouragement.

I love breast feeding so much, so guilt and fear that it may end are definitely weighing on my mind. But it's encouraging to hear about your successes and I know ultimately having a healthy baby is best. The doctor called and said for now I could try feeding more frequently and see if that helps. Right now LO eats every 2.5-3 hrs so I'm bumping it up to every 1.5-2 .... We will see if that helps and if I can keep up with it. And if not, I'll know I tried my best and we will begin supplementing, FX!!!
  • Lo is 5 1/2 months
Weight 12lbs 6 oz at last weeks appointment but she was sick and due to eat right after her appointment so maybe a little more
Size 2 diapers technically but we are using up the last of the size 1
    3-6 month clothes
Nurses twice a day and gets 4 5oz bottles of my milk a day
Dr was concerned in the beginning but has been staying on chart and is proportionate to the rest of her body so I think she's probable just destined to be tiny since me and dh are not the tallest people
  • 6 months on 3/26
    Around 14-15 lbs
Bottle fed breastmilk (some formula due to low supply) 8 x day, purees twice a day
3-6 month or 6 month onesies depend on brand, 6 month pants, 9 month sleepers
LO was 5 weeks premature, born at 4 lb 13 oz...it does kind of bother me when people comment how tiny he is...not sure why. But he was over a month early and has tripled his birth weight so doing just fine! He is following the growth curve perfectly, meeting all milestones, and pedi is happy with his gain. I think we just need to remember all babies are different.

  • It's becoming more and more apparent to me that DD is on the petite side.

    EDT to add another question

I'm confused on the percentile you mentioned. DS is 6 months and around 16 lbs. This puts him between the 10th and 25th percentile.
