Parenting after a Loss

Formula Feeding ? - 3mo

Everyone (parents) keeps asking me when we are going to feed DD more less often. I just don't know how to make the switch. She just started sleeping through the night two nights ago. She is 3 months/13 weeks. We currently feed her 6oz in the morning around 6am and then 5oz 4 times throughout the day and then 6oz at bedtime which is 8pm. She gets a total of 32oz, which our ped says is the high end of what they should get. Basicallly I'm asking how you formula feed your 3 month old.

  • I think all kids are different, I'd just go with the flow. If she's happy and sleeping well, don't mess with a good thing! You can follow paced bottle feeding guidelines to make sure she's not overfeeding if you like (google 'paced bottle feeding') The most helpful thing I found was pausing frequently towards the end of a bottle, taking it out waiting for a second or two and then offering it again by tickling his lip with it to see if he grabs it. If he doesn't, he's probably done. But there's nothing wrong with the amount she's eating as far as I can tell.

  • Honestly, if she's not throwing up, she's not eating too much.  You will start scaling back formula when solids become a major part of her diet, which isn't yet.  Baby 411 is the book that I have relied on the most with P and it says that for a 2-4 month old, 21-40 oz of formula per day is normal.  Your LO is right in the middle of that, so I wouldn't worry.

Unless your pedi says to cut back, I wouldn't.  We've had all kinds of "advice" from family members too and quite frankly I just ignore it.  Things are different now than when our parents raised children.
  • Each baby is different. Just follow your instincts and baby's cues. We get a ton of advice like this because Emma drinks less than the average amount of formula. But she is happy and growing so we don't mind. :)

  • I agree with PP. Just like adults eat at different frequencies and amounts, so do babies. Some people eat 3 meals a day and never snack. Some people graze all day long. Lots of people are somewhere in between. Its ok for babies not to follow certain "rules" that people have for them. She is healthy, growing/gaining weight, and doesn't seem starving, right? You are doing a good job, mama.

  • My girls were preemies born at 32w5d, so I am not sure if this is the same, but my Pediatrician has us wake them up every 3 hours to feed. They currently (at 4.5 months) eat 4-5 oz. a time. We don't wake them overnight to eat, only during the day. I am not sure after their 6 month appt. if she will keep us doing this, but it also helps keep them on schedule b/c there are 2, so we would be feeding ALL day if we didn't feed both around the same time. My mom and MIL harp on the same thing....I say Mind your own business...if it was 1975, we would do it the way they did :)

  • If she isn't crying after a feeding and is sleeping ok, I'd say you're feeding her the perfect amount for her.  You can try slowly increasing the amount if you want, but it sounds like she's good right now.

  • We do partial FF. Belle is 3.5 months and takes anywhere from 3-6 ounces, depending on how much breast milk she's had that day, but 4 is average. If she finishes her bottle and is still sucking air or fussing , we get her more formula. Baby will let you know what she needs. Sounds like your LO is happy, so I would just ignore everyone else.
