Grocery shopping...teach me your ways!

How do you grocery shop with an infant. LO is 2.5 weeks old and we are in need of some food. However I'm terrified to venture to the store. I've heard horror stories about putting the car seat on top of the cart. I can't imagine fitting all the food in if I put his seat in the main basket. I messed around with the moby wrap for a couple of hours this morning and he hates it :-( how do you get your grocery shopping done? Am I overthinking this?

Our carrier fits perfect in the cart. I make sure I feed her right before we go and she usually sleeps most of the time from a combo of the food and the car ride. If she's awake she loves to stare at all of the lights on the ceiling.

That is adventurous of you! I won't be going to the grocery by myself with LO for a while. Do you have a friend, family member, or neighbor that could pick up groceries for you? Good luck!

You'd be amazed how you can maneuver two carts, if you had to. Push one with little one in infant seat...pull the other with groceries. Or take your stroller and do something similar.

@fish8412‌ thanks for making me feel not so bad about it. I've been thinking that maybe I've been overly cautious about going out and about, I'm glad I'm not the only one! Unfortunately we are military recently moved so there's not much help and support around for us. I think I might try the moby one more time and if he can't hang I'll make poor DH go after work.

You can fit quite a bit of food around the carrier when it's set in the cart. Then hook the bags on the outside of the cart.

If you want to keep lo in the main area of the cart, you can put one or two baskets underneath and put your groceries there.

If your store has the 2 level carts they are great. The car seat fits perfect in the top level leaving the whole bottom basket open. If not there are sometimes small hooks around where a toddlers legs would stick out, you can take reusable bags and hang them from those hooks to put your groceries in then you can put the car seat in the main cart basket. Above all just remain calm!! Babies will cry, people will judge, and It's no big deal! If you use a paci, take that to get a few minutes of quiet but just plan to get your groceries and get out. Browsing in any store goes down the tubes when babies are with you! You just learn to be super efficient!

I also babywear when shopping. I've taken both kids by myself numerous times. DS sits in the seat, this lo get strapped to me in the k'tan. To be honest, I don't know how you can grocery shop by yourself without babywearing, unless you're only getting a couple of things.

I feel like I should add that she goes in the big part of the cart not on top when we shop.

I took LO to the store at 1 week and was able to fit plenty around the seat, in the seat spot and underneath. They offered to help me out with the grocery bags but I managed. It's definitely not as bad as you think it could be. And worse case you make a necessary trip today and and everything else tomorrow. Whenever I get the guts to attempt taking both kids to the store I will put LO in a carrier.

Not sure about your lo, but as long as my lo is fed and changed, she usually falls asleep on the drive to the store or while we are walking around the store. I put her seat in the cart (not on top) and still have plenty of room for groceries. I know it seems scary, but once you've gone a few times it's not...and is good to get out on your own!

When I only had DS I would take him in his Snap N Go stroller and then throw groceries in the basket underneath stroller. I couldn't do a huge shop, but I could grab the essentials. Sometimes I would also use one of the carry baskets, which would allow for a few more things. Once DS was a little older, I'd use my Becco Gemini carrier. A lot of times I waited till the weekend when DH was home with me and we went to the store together.

I just took my 2 week 5 day old yesterday. I wore her in my k'tan. I also got the most important stuff first, in case we had to leave quickly.

i was brave enough to take all 3 boys last Saturday!

DS1 (3.5) walked next to the cart, i wore 1 baby (he slept the whole time) and put the other LO's car seat in the buggy.

I was able to fit a lot of groceries in the buggy, around LO and underneath.

Baby wearing is the easiest way to go I've found. Then you have your entire cart to fill & if you have to wander away from your cart LO is with you. Maybe you can try wearing your LO around the house in the Moby to get him used to it. I wear DS in his carrier or wrap while I do chores around the house & he loves it.

I know what people say about not putting the carseat in the seat area if the cart, but I did it last week. I just kept a hand on the carseat the whole time, especially when going to the car. My LO was 2 weeks old, and slept the whole time.

I've only done small grocery trips so far, but wow, the idea to put the groceries in bags hanging from th cart is something I have to try! Duh!

Yes, you're overthinking it.

The carrier takes up most of the cart but I just stack my groceries around it and put larger items on the bottom. I just went today and survived!

We took DD at like 1 week. We have just used her car seat to bring her in and she just sleeps the entire time. I did just buy a wrap and plan to take her by myself in that this week, since DH is back to work tomorrow.

Wheelies or not, it's just not safe! Ask the women who have had their LOs with cracked skulls - or worse.

One major factor is if it's clicking in, the mechanism that clicks into your base may actually be affected to the point of not working properly in the car.

It's not something worth doing for the possible outcomes.

While this may be true, and your kids may be fine but is it really a risk you want to take? 24000 shopping cart related injuries annually. Any injury or even DEATH (Yes. Babies have died from head injuries due to their carriers falling off the shopping cart) that has come from a carrier falling off the top of a cart is 100% preventable. Yes, very bad. That's the worst place to put the infant carrier.

not the same Laura, the problem with the carseats up in the front seating area is that the cart itself is no longer steady. placing the seat where stuff is design to be does not make it unsteady.

Laura is talking about the top basket not the child seat spot. Some stores have two baskets instead of one.

Either we go alone (DH goes alone mostly) or we do curbside pickup. You order your groceries online and when you get there you pull into the pick up line, press a button to let them know you are there and for less than 5 bucks a trip, they deliver your groceries to your car. Amazing!

3. Wait until DH gets home so he can watch baby
4. Send DH to get groceries

What's the difference in sitting the car seat inside the top basket of a cart securely like Laura said, and sitting an older child in the seat of the cart? Or is that dangerous too? Are we afraid the entire cart will topple over?

Yeah they are the only type we have in our small town store. I try to go more often when I only need a few things so I can have basket on one arm and baby seat on the other arm but have occasionally needed to take a cart..

Can't wait for summer so I can baby wear him!!

Can you bring your stroller and push that and pull the cart?
