Nausea and vomiting ONLY after dinner - second tri

I had some nausea and vomiting in first trimester. It seemed to strike in the morning, evenings, and especially the middle of the night. However, starting at about 19 1/2 weeks, I've been VERY nauseated only after dinner every. single. night. It's like clockwork. It hits about 20 minutes after I'm done taking my last bite. The bigger problem I'm running into is that I take all of my pills with dinner and have thrown them up (violently, might I add) a few times now. I'm planning to shift my pills to breakfast so even as I inevitably get sick at dinner, at least my pills won't be lost. I might add that I have a normal-to-large sized lunch and a small breakfast and this doesn't happen. Dinner is the winner here! And PS, I don't think it's the pills causing this because I've been on these exact same pills for far longer than I've been pregnant. No issues until just recently.

I'm not complaining, I'm so excited to be in this position to even ask this question, but I'm wondering if anyone else ran into something similar? Only after-dinner nausea and vomiting? My baby is breech, and the only explanation I can come up with is that her sweet little (or big?) noggin is squishing my stomach making it unable to hold very much volume. If I eat a VERY small dinner, it seems to help somewhat. So that's kind of my resolution right now. A few bites for dinner every night. Curious if this sounded familiar to anyone else reading.

@Crystal120410 I wondered if this might be it. How was it treated?

  • A few possibilities that I can think of:

1 - even though you've been taking the same pills forever, your body may just be reacting to them differently now.  I had been taking a certain multi-vitamin for years and all of a sudden my stomach couldn't handle them anymore, and I ended up on a rice and water diet for a month (pre-pregnancy) for my digestive system to repair itself.  Maybe try splitting them up over the day and seeing if there's a particular one that is the culprit?

2 - Instead of 3 meals, have you tried lots of little meals?  Even though I'm fine after large lunches, whenever I have even a little too much with dinner I have a whole lot of discomfort.  Sometimes nausea and/or vomiting, sometimes indigestion, sometimes just plain old pain.  Cutting back on meal size at the end of the day really helped for me.  My theory is that my body is still digesting the day's food, so there's less room available even though my stomach feels empty.  No idea if this is how it works though!

3 - I started having really severe reflux sometime between 20 and 23 weeks (I can't remember exactly).  It was to the point that I'd wake up in the middle of the night feeling like I was drowning in bile.  Relief included: stopping eating several hours before laying down for the night, sleeping on a greater incline (doc recommended books under the mattress, but I just added pillows), limiting beverage consumption to only water until things settled down (fruit juice, coffee, tea, etc. increase acid production), eliminating carbonation (I had been on a soda water kick until then), and ultimately I was given a prescription for a daily medication (Pepcid - category B!)

I hope you find some relief!  You deserve to be past the vomiting stage with this baby!

  • I have tons on nausea and still vomit after eating with this pregnancy and my previous one. For me the reason is I overeat. Small frequent meals helped me feel better.
