September 2014 Moms

Anyone eating/drinking things they know they "shouldn't"?

I wouldn't have dreamed of doing this during my first pregnancy, but we recently went under contract to sell our house (we're moving in July ) and to celebrate, I ordered rare seared tuna for dinner, which I think is perfectly fine (because I've never gotten sick from rare or raw fish before), but I know technically is on the prohibited list of foods.  I have been craving sushi like crazy, so this was a small indulgence for me, and it tasted SO good!!  I also had a small amount of wine, which I did not do at all during the first pregnancy, but now doesn't seem so bad on occasion.  This pregnancy is so much harder being a mom already of a 15 month old who refuses to walk and working full-time taking care of everything else and an upcoming move.  That said, I'm thrilled about it.  How are you ladies doing?

  • With DS I ate raw sushi all the time. This time it doesn't sound good at all. I do eat lunch meat, blue cheese, and have had two glasses of wine. I'm not too concerned about what I eat. I just make sure it's not bought from a gas station ;)
  • This is my first pregnancy, and while I'm trying to eat well...sometimes it's so hard!! ;) I was so nauseous my entire first tri, and one of the only things that sounded remotely edible was Chick-fil-A. My boyfriend hated how often I ate it. He likes to look up every possible pregnancy "no no" online and was very concerned with chemicals. I know it's not the best thing for me or the baby, but I just told myself it was better than starving us both! Glad to know I'm not alone! :)
So do you eat all organic and non-GMO foods?

It is actually better than almost all fast food. Their grilled chicken sandwich is actually pretty healthy considering it is fast food and they have fruit or a salad as sides.

I followed all the food rules during my first pregnancy. I googled before I ate, I was bad. But I ate fast food because it was all I could eat and keep down. My OB said it was me important that I way anything at all than continue to lose weight.

This pregnancy I've been a bit more loose. I've had bacon a couple times and even sushi. :-)

I was actually thinking that. Then again I've had all sorts of fast food... gimme it ALL!

@whitney4126‌ In limited quantities nothing. Or if you buy uncured (you definitely have to look for it) absolutely nothing. But most bacon is cured in nitrates which if eaten in large quantities can reduce the oxygen that reaches LO. But like I said, moderation is fine. Also, make sure it's crispy to protect yourself from Listeria!

    Google is evil.

  • @lstrejcek‌ I do not. I wish I had the will power (and grocery budget) but I try to buy my meat and produce organic when I can. @flyawaycricket‌ Good to know! Being my first pregnancy, I feel like I should feel guilty for every little unhealthy thing I put in my mouth. It's so nice to have other moms to give their advice! :)
Well I am just speaking on what I know of chick-fil-a...if you get the grilled chicken, there isn't anything in it that isn't in any non organic or gmo food. It is actually a whole, grilled chicken breast which is more than any other fast food place can say about their food and you have healthier side options. So as far as I'm concered, unless you are a strict organic person, DH shouldn't make you feel bad for eating what you do every other day.

  • My OB discussed this with me at the first visit - no cooked or uncooked sushi, no unpasteurized cheeses, bacon, hot dogs, rare meat, deli meat, alcohol, sprouts, blue cheese dressing. I don't understand as all cheeses sold at regular grocery stores are pasteurized...I'm not buying cheese at specialty stores. If the sushi and deli meat are fresh and from reputable places, why isn't it ok. Does that also mean I cannot eat from salad bar in the hospital cafeteria? MH is adamant that I follow the rules, but every pg person I know has indulged in all of the above, I still haven't made a decision about eating any of it.

You know what peeves me...iced tea. Like we are supposed to limit the caffeine intake to 8oz or so but most iced teas in restaurants are around 16-20oz glasses! And good luck getting decaf iced tea. Pfft. I think it's odd that it's seemingly "better" to drink a big ass decaf root beer than a somewhat healthy caffeinated iced tea. :/
What are YOU drinkin?? We are supposed to limit caffeine to less than 200 mg....That's 53 ounces of Diet Coke.

As Mermz stated above, salad was recently recalled but I haven't heard a problem with safely handled lunch meat in recent memory. Also, what do you think women in Japan eat during pregnancy?

Then make sure you avoid bagged salad, peanut butter and cantelope because those were all recently recalled for listeria

Sounds a bit snarky but thanks for the list of recently recalled foods for listeria

  • I drink soda a couple of times per week, I drink tea, I eat bacon, have had feta, and cold chicken on a salad at Panera bread, and will eventually probably eat some sort of not heated deli meat. The one thing I probably won't do is drink but that is just because I am not a big drinker in general. Honestly, there is just so much to keep up with, half the time I will eat something that I wasn't even aware I was supposed to NOT eat. My friend pointed out the cold chicken on the salad. This pregnancy is just so different and I am less paranoid. I think all is fine in moderation!

  • Last time I did everything perfectly - no deli meat, no raw or rare fish or seafood, etc... this time I'm still eating deli meat, and I'm debating on having a spicy tuna roll later this week... if it sounds good to me, I'll probably do it... no booze though.  My doctor even says that an occasional glass of wine is fine, and I agree that it is, but it sounds disgusting to me, and my heartburn is already pretty bad so I don't want to risk making it worse!

Everything else is fair game, in moderation. Actually, I didn't even know that hot dogs and bacon were on the list, because they weren't something I was told to stay away from or limit in my last pregnancy. Fortunately (?) I ate 3/4 package of bacon early in my pregnancy and it made me feel so ill that I don't think I can ever eat bacon again.

  • I've been eating heated deli meat and cooked sushi, both of which I've assumed were fine. I especially can't imagine why someone's OB would've banned cooked sushi... because it was NEAR raw sushi? Sigh. Last pregnancy there were a few times I accidentally ate something I wasn't supposed to, but I do in general try to avoid the things that make moderate sense, though it's mostly for my own piece of mind. Women in other countries do not suffer the same ridiculous recommendations that we do, and I feel like I've read something recently where many of the recommendations we're given and the "research" supporting avoiding certain foods was cast under serious speculation. I wish I could find it!

  • Oh, I forgot about the runny eggs! Also on my list. Yes, the reason for not eating cooked sushi is because it may be prepared in the same table and by the same hands that prepared
Raw sushi. Just saying what they told me....how redic they are! (Sorry, on mobile, not sure how to quote). And yes, I realize pregnant Japanese women eat sushi...I asked that question at my appt...she didn't have an answer.

Also, I went wine tasting with family to 4 different wineries two weeks ago. Although I was obviously designated driver, I'll be damned if I didn't take a sip of my hubby's wine every once in awhile. All the while my sloshed mother is telling me, "I drank wine all the time when I was pregnant with you!"

I have a cup of coffee daily, the occasional turkey sandwich, I have had a small glass of wine 3 times, I made a 'lucky dog' (hot dog split long ways but not all the way through topped with mashed potatoes and melted American cheese) the other day. I don't like sushi, but if I did I probably would eat some. Everything in moderation. I eat pretty healthy most of the time and the small indulgence keeps me sane.
Also I just had some vanilla froyo with melted peanut butter, @dearfoam.

I never even thought about hotdogs. I rarely buy them (once or twice a year) but my older son requested them for his birthday yesterday and I complied. By eating two. They were nitrate free, but they were freaking hotdogs. I'm sure there were a thousand and fifty terrible things in them.

Not so much bc I think something bad will happen, but if something did go wrong I don't want to blame myself and say "if only I hadn't eaten that".
