STMs...Maternity attire must haves?

Any recommendations for things that FTMs need as far as maternity wear?  Something we may not think of?

Thanks!

  • Okay I not a STM but.... I am so glad that palazzo pants and gouchos are back in style. PERFECT TIMING! I ordered some and am hoping they will be my favorite prego pants!

Maternity tanks- the gap has really soft ones. I wear them under stuff, by themselves, to bed, love them.

This! Totally worth spending some money on.

  • I guess it depends on what you do all day and what your style is.

I'm a SAHM and this time I'm buying leggings, extra long layering tanks and shirts, a basic dress or two, two nice shirts, a pair of skinny jeans and a hoodie or sweater.

Last time I bought a bunch of cheap crap from motherhood maternity or destination maternity or something. This time I'm gonna choose clothing that's better constructed and nicer fabrics. You get what you pay for, unfortunately.

Just figured out that Nordstroms carries some Isabelle Oliver, and they have free shipping and free returns, unlike the IO online store.

Yes I was so disappointed by motherhood maternity. By the time the pregnancy was over everything was coming apart or stretched waaaay out. I bought some maternity tanks from target i'm loving. Also some clothes from Pink Blush Maternity online. They look really nice i'm looking forward to wearing them.

I really love all of the Gaps maternity line- everything I buy is from there and a pea in the pod- I really love the gap though and if you keep an eye on the website you can get some great sales.
  • Skinny jeans/pants/leggings will be invaluable. I feel like things that are shapely will flatter, and things that are just big won't. That's why the skinny jeans are awesome, you can wear a flowy top and still look cute (instead of just big). You can dress the up or down, so they're versatile too! Google maternity fashion blogs and you'll find your favorite looks to replicate.

Also, if you have a sewing maching and can sew a straight line you can make a maxi dress! It's so easy! Here's a link to the tutorial I used: https://sweet-verbena.blogspot.com/2011/07/boho-maxi-dress-tutorial.html?m=1
  • I shop non-maternity for a lot of things like maxi skirts and shirts a size up from what I normally wear. This time I am using a belly band to see how long I can wear my non-pregnancy jeans. I'll probably pick up some cute shirts too. I hated my wardrobe last time so it's important to find things you really love rather than settle for the cheap crap like at Motherhood Maternity!

  • Last time I LOVED Gap dress pants for work. They were pricey, but well worth it!

  • I agree on Motherhood Maternity!  I didn't know you could actually make clothes out of paper....

I do like Gap Maternity, and I had a pair of pants from the Loft last time that I loved too.  I just wish I hadn't given away my favorite Gap maternity jeans - they were normal in the front and only had elastic in the back and actually stayed up and were comfortable my whole pregnancy.

  • The maternity support belt when your belly starts getting big was a huge help for me. And maternity compression hose as I am on my feet for 10-11 hours a day at work.

I bought jersey dresses from Old Navy that are "regular" but worked really well for most of pregnancy. I also suggest getting the ribbed Mossimo tanks at Target. They stretch around a belly very well, keep their shape and are inexpensive.

Things may be different now, but I had a pair of jeans from Motherhood Maternity that I loved and they held up pretty well.
  • Old Navy black maternity yoga pants. I wore those to work almost daily when pregnant with DS, so comfy!

  • My only advice is to make sure you have more than one pair of maternity jeans. With my last two pregnancies, I didn't buy much maternity wear and tried to make my regular clothes work for as long as possible. That worked fine except for the last month or so, when I basically wore the same two or three items every single day. It was brutal and boring--I looked and felt miserable. Needless to say, by the end of my second pregnancy, my one pair of maternity jeans was worn through! I'm going to try to buy a few more items that'll last me to the very end, to see if I can keep them in better shape this time!

  • Buy good maternity jeans.  I didn't buy a good pair till I was eight month pregnant and thought I would get no use out of them....well I was in maternity clothes until 6 month post partum.

  • I lived in my black maternity yoga pants for the last month. I also got a lot of use out of my maternity tanks. I think they were Old Navy.

  • Maxi dresses, leggings/yoga pants, support bras, rubber bands for jeans that fit now but may need a little extra room, flip flops- no tying required!
Super comfy undies. Bye bye thongs.

  • Leggings, yoga pants, long tank tops. And i love those spaghetti strap tops with the little built in bras. When you have a new born who has time to put on a bra lol. I never used nursing bras.

  • personally, I'm an embrace your bump kind of girl. I think that it makes you look smaller in a lot of ways.

That being said, some jeans that have the demi panel and some that have the full panel, but always some demi ones that still fit because the full panel ones itch like crazy.

Some summer dresses, lots of layering tank tops for when shirts get a wee bit too short at the end.

    Maxi skirts/fold over skirts.

    Slip on shoes.

    Good bras

Plain cotton undies towards the end so you don't stretch out your nice ones but that you don't care all that much about , you can use them during your pp bleeding time and then you can trash them if you want.

I also plan on doing lots of leggings/long shirts this time too

This thread is awesome. :) I wasn't planning on taking maternity clothes seriously, but I am now thinking I should. I really hope to rock some bump friendly sundresses this summer. I have several but they may be too short to cover the bump. As for October/ November I am going to need warm clothes and hoodies. I hate clothes shopping.

  • I recommend figuring out sooner rather than later if you are an underbelly or overbelly person.  I personally hate all bottoms that go underbelly (other than comfy, cottony, stretch stuff).  For any of my jeans, work pants, etc- I always get over the belly. I picked up a couple of cute bottoms in the beginning that were underbelly and they are just so uncomfortable to me, so I never wore them.

ASOS is amazing! I've also been patrolling H&M and TopShop, but trying not to buy too much so early. I almost wish I were bigger, just so I could justify a big spree at any of those three shops, but then I remember how miserable it is to be a beached whale ;-)

  • I bought some stuff from ASOS last time. Some of their items are really low quality and just ridiculous, I bought a dress from then once that was obviously sewed together incorrectly. But with free shipping and free returns it's really worth it to browse thru what they have.

I hate when I see non-pregnant women modeling maternity clothes. Please get a pregnant model! I don't care what it looks like on a 5'10" model wearing a fake bump!

  • I'm more comfortable in dresses/skirts anyway, so I'm all about maternity dresses.

If you plan on bf-ing, look for anything that will double as maternity/nursing gear.  Last time I found a couple dresses at Target that I could also nurse in.  I definitely got my money's worth out of those dresses!

It's annoying because you really can't take advantage of too many sales in the maternity department - it's not like you can save it until it's hot/cold again.

  • Another thing that nobody has mentioned yet that I loved is support hose. Sexy, I know, but I LOVED mine. They prevented swelling and soreness in my legs and ankles. I could definitely tell the difference at the end of the days I didn't put them on.
  • I am definitely getting a maternity swimsuit this time around. I don't care how much I resemble a whale, it's way too hot to stay out of the pool during summer! Especially since I have to go through the entire summer this time.

  • Yes to the leggings and tanks. And a good basic t-shirt and long sleeved shirt to go under things. You can get a lot more mileage with my dresses with layering pieces. And Toms type shoes, I lived in those last time.

What makes an item good for nursing? New to this so not sure!

Also anyone seen any maternity coats they could link to? My friend is due in April and she wore this tent like jacket (not even a warm coat!!) all winter long (and it's been a long one!) so I want to make sure I have a good cute coat for fall. I saw an awesome one that converts to a coat for baby wearing, but it's $150!

Good point!  I need to look for a jacket/light coat for next fall!

  • @nonoemily‌ I agree about the quality of ASOS. It's not high quality. The things I bought from Destination Maternity really held up the best. I would go to DM for basics and places like H&M or ASOS for a couple of fun things. ASOS would also be a great place to buy something you will only wear once like a dress for a wedding.

This!  demi panel resulted in me peeing myself one day at work and the only store I could get to was Rue 21 so I had to walk around the rest of the day with purple sweat pants with a huge velour heart on the ass.  Ove the belly never puts that kind of pressure on your stomach.

The dresses I got were actually labeled as such - so that made it easy to figure out :)  Basically, nursing tops have some way of exposing the boob built in.  Here's a link to one I found on google, although I don't think this style is meant for maternity as well:
