Teachers who are returning to work

Are you getting your long term sub a thank you gift? My sub has been fabulous! She has taken new students, entered all assignments into the grade book. When I return to work I will just pick up where she left off. I was thinking of getting her something small, but not sure what. Anyone else getting their sub something?

Re: Teachers who are returning to work

  • I'm not but only because I don't like who they got for my sub. as a SpEd teacher, we decide their placements for the next year. she emailed me and said she doesn't "feel comfortable" with my recommendations. umm I didn't ask you. you've known the kids for a few weeks, I've known them all year.

  • Thanks so much for the reminder. I definitely will! My sub has done it all for my class & she's awesome. I knew her from before, so I knew my class was in good hands. I go back to work after spring break, which is the day after Easter. I haven't decided what I will get her. Maybe a gift card to Target or Starbucks. With baby #1 last year, I had a different long term sub that was also fabulous. I got him a $100 gift card to Target. I've been really lucky with subs. I've spent the last 2 school years pregnant, pumping, or on bed rest. I'm hoping next school year will be a regular full year of teaching.
  • I'm not. I had three different subs, I did all the lesson plans, I've done grades and newsletters since I've been out.

I'm not. My sub is absolutely the worst. They even looked for a new sub, but finding a sub with the right certification has been hard (preK special Ed). I will however, be getting my assistant a gift. She has been amazing and the only reason the students are making progress. @Rach521‌ I am also having issues with the sub telling me my placements I recommended for next year are wrong. She has also told me that my IEP goals and lessons are inappropriate, so she is doing her own thing. X(
  • Good idea I didn't even think of! My sub was my classroom assistant before and will go back to that role when I return. She has done an amazing job :)

  • I go back on April 22.  She has been meh.  I am getting her a 25 dollar gift card to Olive Garden.

@shellbell3845 Really?! That's lawsuit-worthy, if you were officially on maternity leave or FMLA or STD. I believe that your job can't legally require you to do anything if you're on one of those.

@RosiePeare‌ Yep. Small Catholic school. My subs weren't music teachers, so I provided all the lesson plans and materials. I'm on STD for six weeks and FMLA for another 4. I probably could have pressed the issue with my principal, but I like her and didn't want to cause problems.

  • Nah, I didn't get paid for my leave, and she did. Plus, heard she's been creating extra work for when I return.
