We won't do a 3D/4D - mostly because they creep DH and I out and partly because insurance doesn't cover it.
I had a friend get one who ended up having an emergency c-section later that same night (unrelated to the scan) and he didn't look anything like the pictures.

From what I can tell, it can be pretty hit or miss. At first, I didn't think my son looked like the pics. Now I can totally see it. It's uncanny, actually. Of course, the pics totally freaked me out at first because it looked like he had this awful pressed-in nose. I know it was just because there's not a lot of room in there, but still. I was petrified that he would come out with this terrible nose. Turns out his nose is actually the cutest part of him!

I was so excited for my 4D and now regret getting it. I heard that it's an extremely loud sound, like a jackhammer, in the baby's otherwise quiet world but I wanted to see his face so badly. So I made an appointment and had my whole family there to watch. I could actually feel the pulse of the ultrasound waves going through my stomach to the baby. His little face came up on the screen and yes it was magical and adorable, then we noticed he was frowning and wincing horribly, and started putting his little hands up over his face, like he was trying to block out the sound. He then started squirming violently away, my whole stomach was lurching, and in a matter of minutes had breached himself and spun completely around. This was at 34 weeks so luckily he has since spun back into head-down position, but I felt really badly about the whole thing and would not do it again.
It was amazing seeing what our little one was up to in there! She had her feet over her head and it looked like she was singing. Most places give you a DVD which you and your child will be able to enjoy years later. My 5 year old loves watching his ultrasound. This is our second time getting it done. Our boys loved seeing there little sister on the big screen too. Totally worth every penny!
I wasn't going to do one...but...my hubby got me a gift card to this pregnancy spa that offers it as part of the spa package...sooo...we are going to be doing one next Saturday. I'm at the right point too, I'll be just shy of 31 weeks! I am excited because I only got three US total - confirmation, DS test and anatomy scan...so it will be nice to see little man, and here are fingers crossed he cooperates!

Hmm interesting, I have been wondering about this..
I had mine today. It was wonderful. The baby was cooperative. We found she has super chubby cheeks and a perfect little mouth. I can't wait to meet her!

We had 3 done. Our doctor said that are totally fine so I'm surprised to hear other doctors said they weren't so great. We actually went for an HD today. I'm 27 weeks on Monday.
We had ours today! :-) 30w4d It was a great experience! He was not in the best position so I had to lay on my side but we got to see his cute little face and chubby cheeks! So in love!!
I see the perinatologist every 6 weeks for scans and they always flip on the 3d and 4d when they are done with the 2d, so we have seen him in 3 and 4d at 21, and 27 weeks and will see him again at 33. I'm thinking that will be the last one.
