Amnio question (warning: atypical experience discussed)

For those of you who have had an amnio before, did your Dr puncture through the placenta, and if so, did you have a stream of your own blood entering the uterus? If so, and if you remember, how long did that last?
I had one done yesterday to determine which form of Trisomy 18 our baby has. The above was my experience, and the Dr said streaming typically stops after 30 seconds or so. Mine lasted 5 minutes, then on/off for an additional 5 mins.
Dr said that he was concerned when it didn't stop streaming, so I asked why and he was very evasive. I asked again and still, an evasive response. I honestly don't think he knew what would happen if it didn't stop, because he said in the 40 years he's practiced, he's never had someone stream that long. That's so reassuring! Thanks!!

The streaming stopped but I'm bothered my the whole experience. Can't find any University of Google publications on the matter so I will discuss in depth with my midwife on Tuesday, but wondered if anyone has had any similar experience.

  • Thanks all, I feel fine today but it was a bit unnerving, especially because DH is out of the country.
  • I hope you can find others to compare your experience to, from what you share, it does seem concerning. I just wanted to say I'm sorry that you're dealing with this, and send positive thoughts and prayers. I hope you get reassuring information.
  • yikes.  hope its no biggie!

  • I had one with my first and they didn't go near my placenta.  He just went into the womb and took the fluid and came out.  I was told to stay off my feet for the rest of the day.  No bleeding or anything like that at all.
  • hugs hope you get some answers.

  • No experience, they didn't go through my placenta. I would call them and ask again, and if there's no answer I would complain. A good doctor will admit they don't know but figure it out. That's kind of scary and he should have told you he wasn't sure what it meant but he would find out. I had to have a transfusion and a few days before they did it, they were honest with me when they said they really had no clue what they were doing but were figuring it out.
