Success after IF

Slow Rising HCG

hi ladies, ia m trying to cc after an early loss. we have two healthy boys ages 6 and 2.

i had spotting again early in this pregnancy and so they have been monitoring my betas.

beta one 2203

beta two 3838 (doubled in like 66 hours or something)

beta three 8843 (four days apart, doubling time of 79 hours)

Anyone have any stories like this? Success or failure? My doctor said there is a low chance this pregnancy is viable. I am 5 weeks  5 days. I am so sad! We will have an ultrasound early next week to see if anything is in the uterus. But the doctor told me not to get my hopes up at all. I had read that betas slow down after 6000 but he didn't seem to agree :(

I'm surprised your doctor is super concerned. My beta NEVER doubled in 48 hours and my RE's nurse specifically told me to stay off the internet because of the 48 hour talk. My RE wanted a doubling in 48-72 hours with only a 60% rise in 48 hours. And, the HCG rise progressively slows with rising numbers, so much so that many docs won't take them past a certain point since an ultrasound is a much better indication of viability at that point. I had 3 with my last being in the 3000s. There used to be a great page on doubling rates by HCG level on the APA website, but I can't seem to find it. Maybe someone else can chime in with the info? Fx for a great ultrasound!!

  • Im so confused by your doctor. Those numbers are awesome. Go to countdowntopregnancy and it has a chart showing where numbers should be and how they slow. Hope it helps.

Are you seeing an RE or an OB? Either way, I am giving him/her a side eye. Normal doubling time is 48-72 hours, but that is the doubling time you would expect when your numbers are lower. My first beta at four weeks 2 days with DS was 288 and two days later it was in the mid 500's. With my twin pregnancy my betas started higher and rose faster. As your numbers get higher, doubling time slows down. This is normal. Nobody here can guarantee that everything is alright, but these numbers seem good to me. I don't get why your doctor is so pessimistic based on them. Wishing you all the best!

  • Thanks ladies for your replies. I've been bawling all day! My husband is set that this is going to be a Normal pregnancy but since the bleeding I've been scared. I am seeing my regular ob. I posted here as I figured you ladies would have more experience with betas. I have never had betas done in a pregnancy that lasted only in miscarriage when numbers were already decreasing.
He said he gives me a 20 percent chance of a viable pregnancy. We only increased 51 percent per 48 hours on the last draw, which was four days a part. So the doubling time was 3.3 days. He said he would expect my numbers to slow down but not until 6 or 7 weeks. I'm only 5 weeks 5 days now. I switched obs after my last practice had horrible bedside manner after an early loss. But this doctor is very set on the numbers. He said if Monday we see a sac and a yolk sac we would continue to monitor. I think I'm done with betas though. I just want to see what the ultrasound has to say!!
  • I'm sorry your doctor is causing you to worry. Your numbers look good to me and are definitely moving in the right direction. GL!

  • I agree with the others that your numbers actually look pretty good! My betas at 4w were 64 and then only 91 at 4w5d!!! That's a doubling time of 236 hours!!! We quit testing once they reached 500 at 5w2d because ultrasound gives much more valuable information at that point and betas don't double as fast after 1000. I'm so sorry you're left feeling so concerned! Don't lose hope!
