I am so excited to post this update on my baby girl who is currently sleeping in my arms!
On Tuesday night I was watching TV and without warning my water broke at 3 days overdue. We called my OB and he told us to head to the hospital. Once we got there, it was confirmed that my water broke and we called our doula to join us.
I was not having contractions when we got to the hospital, so we did some walking of the halls and bouncing on a birth ball to get things going. My OB offered pitocin to help move things along but I wanted a med free birth to give Caroline the best chance I could give her - with her heart defect I did not know how she would handle a potential drop in blood pressure with an epidural. We chose not to monitor her heart during labor because I don't know how I could continue on with labor if I knew that she had passed away.
It turned out that I absolutely did not need pitocin; walking, bouncing, and sitting in a birthing tub during transition got me from 4cm to complete over the course of about 4 hours. Pushing was the most difficult part for me; I pushed for about 2.5 hours but was able to accomplish the med free birth that I wanted with only a small tear!
Caroline was then brought into the world very alert with her eyes wide open and making some noise! This was a big deal because we were told she would likely be stillborn and if not, she would probably not cry.
We immediately had Caroline baptized and a Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep photographer took photos for us. We knew we were lucky to have even minutes with her, so we told her how much we loved her and that if she needed to go, we would be okay and see her again in heaven.
Caroline has all of the problems seen prenatally but has beaten the odds. We are choosing to give her comfort care and she was discharged on hospice yesterday. We are SO THRILLED to have her home with us and the chance to show her how loved she is. She is perfect in every way.
