    What? NIP? I'm guessing the popularity of formula helped push BFing out of fashion back in the 70s or so.

    @mrscurlygurl‌ my mom said it was passé to nurse in the 70s and it was a status symbol to formula feed. She still doesn't fully "get" why I ebf.

    My MIL talks all the time about how she wishes she had done it, but that she was basically discouraged by everyone in her life. She says her mom and everyone talked about how "cheap" formula was. I'm all like, yeah...but 15 cents (or whatever it was) was still 15 cents more than breast milk... You're right though...most definitely a status symbol back then.

    Yeah, but I doubt it. I don't really see how exposing my naked breast will make me feel free when I don't personally like showing a lot of skin.

    Now, stealing noms from the bulk food bin - that is like the wind in my hair.
    FWIW - I didn't ebf long before switching to EP-ing (only about two months), and I never really got 100% comfortable with NIPing without a cover. Maybe the longer you do it, the easier it gets. I found many ways to still NIP without being exposed in any way, and never finding myself in a public bathroom. You'll figure it out. :)

    I've pumped in many airport bathrooms though and I'm not excited to go back to that.

    Yes! Thank you both! I'm not sure how the logistics of it will work yet, it does seem like it takes a lot of juggling. BFing is something that has always seemed like the ultimate act of nurturing and motherhood. Whenever I come across a woman doing that, the bond is so apparent...I really hope things work out to where it happens for me.

    Having said that, my boobs better take a clue from my belly and start plumping up more, I'm still a full B but this kid will starve! @Ghostof5letters is it really true this may not happen until the last few weeks? Do they hurt then as much they do in the 1st tri?
    OMG! Engorgement freakin hurt! Or it did for me at least. I was miserable for a couple of days and I DO NOT look forward to that again.

    It is pretty astounding how much they grow once the milk comes it. It doesn't stay that way though, for everyone anyways. I nursed DS for about 19 months and they went back down to their usual size after 6 months or so maybe. 

    And I definitely agree that the longer you BF the more likely you are to NIP with less self-consciousness. I was a lot more open with it the second summer around DH's family than I was the first summer. It helped that DS would come up to me and basically pull my shirt down himself though ;)

    I feel this exact same way. I'm very shy about my body, but it would never bother me to see someone else NIP.

    Yep- boob size has nothing to do with it. I am normally a small B, they maybe grow to a large B... And I nursed with no problem. The more you nurse, the more they produce. My mom... Is smaller than me....and she nursed twins (me and my brother) with no problem.

    So glad for these two videos to show DD. We've been talking a lot to her how new baby only will have milk from Mommy, but these will help. I'm going to be so tickled when she "nurses" her baby dolls.

    My Grandma formula fed her three kids in the late 40's-early 50's.  She thought it was "dirty" to breastfeed.  They made their own formula, I think it was mostly corn syrup :/.  So I think it started a lot sooner than the 70s.  She talked my mom out of BFing my oldest brother but I'm so glad that my Mom went her own way nursed her other three children.  Then again, I also found a book from 1948 in my Grandma's stuff about how to be a proper lady,  it said something along the lines of "Vigorous exercise is not recommended," and there was an ad for a douche that was pretty much BLEACH.  The book was so ridiculous that i saved it, but it's in storage at my ILs.

    I too thought I would be uncomfortable. My daughter did not want her head covered and would push off blankets. She would cry for milk and there is not much rationalizing with an under 1 year old. So I nursed in public sans cover and will do so again. This is not to be showey: this is to be practical. It also is not illegal in my state for women to go topless, but even if it was I would still nip.

    This is probably a total FTM thing to ask but I have read that wearing tight bras will stifle milk production. I have been wearing a bra to bed because A) I'm too lazy to take it off and B) sometimes free hanging makes me feel like I have 35 pound weights on my chest. 

    And of course now I am worried my milk won't come in properl

    Can someone tell me I'm being crazy? Or tell me to take that bra off at night?

    You're crazy. The only time I take my bra off is to shower

    As a FTM this thread makes me feel so much better! What about the leaking/non-leaking situation affecting BF afterwards? I'm happy to not be leaking now (26 weeks) but am concerned that may mean I'm not filling up or producing... Is this a foreshadow or problems to come?

    No. I rarely leaked...like maybe one time (post birth), and BF'd DS for 19 months. I didn't have a huge supply necessarily, but I produced enough for him. Your milk doesn't even come in right away, so you definitely don't need to be filling up right now.

    I'm a FTM too, and I was actually surprised to find out that your milk doesn't usually come in until a few days after you give birth... So no need to worry right now!  When new moms are able to nurse their baby right away in the hospital, it is usually just colostrum which precedes the actual milk (and may be what you are leaking now).

    The colostrum is premilk and very nutritious. However any leaking as I understand it before birth is really no indication :)

    "Once your baby is born, the underwire bra thing is more controversial. Officially, there’s no real hard evidence that underwire bras are linked to lactation problems, but there IS a lot of anecdotal evidence that poorly-fitting underwire bras can lead to clogged ducts and such. So some women are told to avoid underwire bras completely for six weeks or 12 or however long it takes for their breast milk supplies to regulate. Because until your supply regulates, your boob size can change by the DAY, if not the HOUR. So again, it’s not that that underwires = evil, it’s just that you’re more likely to wear one that’s the wrong size during the early days of nursing and wind up with a plugged duct."

    @rattlecanqueen, they are called nuroo nursing scarves!  I googled and found the website.  Totally planning to buy the grey and white striped one!  The website shows a bunch of different ways you can wear it too.

    I didn't leak at all when I was pregnant with DD. My milk came in just fine at 3.5 days PP and I had a healthy supply and nursed for 22 months.

    As far as the bra, I think it's fine now. I would avoid a tight bra when you're nursing though. I never wore underwire. I wore a sleep nursing bra 24/7 for a long time. Never had mastisis and only 1 clogged duct.

    BFP#2 7/3/13.  U/S at 6w4d showed 1 heartbeat at 127 bmp and 2 empty sacs.  MMC discovered at 10w4d.  D&C 8/27/13.  Pathology showed normal boy.  Missing our babies every day.
    BFP#3 10/29/13!  Beta#1 at 4w5d - 2141, beta#2 at 5w1d - 7651!  U/S 11/21/13 showed baby measuring 2 days ahead with a heartbeat of 127 bmp!

    @JP27 I had a clogged milk duct that was very painful.  It extended all the way from under my arm pit to the nipple and you could actually see the one gland still filled with milk after I fed her from that breast.  I do believe my underwire caused it.
