Newborn Workhorse Questions

Happy Saturday!

Quick question, I'm looking into GMD newborn workhorses. I see now that you can order them with snap closures or with no snaps (in which I'm assuming you'd use Snappis, etc or safety pins). With a newborn, what's the better choice? (I'm trying to consider the stump, too)

Other related questions -

How many would you get (in a stash with prefolds, covers, and a few AIOs)?

Is there a better time of day/night to use these (vs prefolds or AIOs)?

What covers do you think seem to fit them best? I have 6 Thirsties Duo Wrap covers so far. Should I get a few other brands or will these fit workhorses NB size and small size?

The snapless, I hear, also have longer wings which helps them fit longer.

Thanks! Currently I've got 11 osocozy purple edged prefolds, but I've read here that they may make for a super bulky NB diaper. I'm getting ready to order a dozen GMD NB prefolds, and I have 6 thirsties covers, and then 4 BG NB AIO and 1 NB Simplex. I figured with the GMD prefolds order I might throw in 5 NB size workhorses. I've got a set of 3 snappies.

Am I focusing too much on my NB stash or will I just feel the urge to order more as Baby J gets bigger?

The bg nb aio are not very absorbent, FYI, and they don't have a pocket or anything. At least the ones I have are not very absorbent, but they are a few years old.

We had 8 NB workhorses, 12 NB prefolds, 2 Bummis Super Brite NB covers, 2 RaR NB covers, a Blueberry mini-coverall, and 2 Thirsties Duo Wraps as well as a few NB AIOs. I liked the Bummis covers the best the first 2 weeks but as PPs mentioned, they grow out of them quickly. I also like aplix for a more custom fit right away.

As far as the workhorses, I use them at night (still do at 8 weeks and very few leaks). I prefer snapless as there is more 'wing' to work with and fit is customizable. The NB simplex is my favorite AIO but not absorbant enough for night time (at least once you get more than 2 hours between feeds). I had 2 BG AIOs that I quickly gave up on due to poor absorbency, so risky in the MOTN :-)

I didn't know about workhorses during NB stage, but if we have a 2nd I will probably be adding a few to my NB stash.

I had Kissaluvs size 0 and I really liked them when I knew a poop was coming, i.e., during and shortly after nursing. So if I got some workhorses I would probably put one on at the beginning of each nursing session.

@unaveragejane‌ @RugbyMamma‌ the GMDs are sold to OP. I do have a dozen imagine better fits I need to destash too. Prepped only, never used. Infant size.

I have 6 newborn workhorses and use both Thirsties size one covers and Assunta tiny covers on top. At first I was going to buy snaps but then I decided to get snapless after the board recommended it to get a better fit, and I am glad I did so! I purchased Boingos as my fastener, but also have the free pair of diaper pins that GMD offers along with your purchase.

I used ours for night time. We got the snap ones, and I ended up using a snappi or boingo anyway because I just found it easier than trying to line up snaps in the dark. I would get some true newborn covers for the first few weeks. I had a smaller kid, but our thirsties size 1 didn't fit for a few weeks even with the velcro tabs completely crossed over. I had a few used nb prowraps, and they were a lifesaver.

I have 20 workhorses in NB. I personally prefer the snaps, BUT I can see how the snapless may fit for longer and maybe stretch out the stash so you could skip a size. Those 20 fitteds join a stash of 13 Aios and 12 NB prefolds, 24 size 1 prefolds.

I think you're good with 6 thirsties covers, unless you want a few nb specific covers for the early days/weeks. The duo size ones will fit for a while.

I had 8 NB workgorses and 24 prefolds. As with most people, I prefer no closure with a snappi. My thirsties s1 covers didn't fit her until about 8/8.5 lbs (which for us was about 6 weeks). I loved my RaR nb, Blueberry s1, and Assunta tiny covers.

ETA: we use them mostly at night or for going out.

I have 4 nb workhorses, 2 doz nb prefolds, and six nb pockets. The workhorses are my favorite hands down I wish my entire stash were workhorses. My LO is already borderline outgrowing the orange prefolds-width wise-but the orange workhorses are still fine, no closure. I really like the thirsties sz 1 in their new Velcro abd the rar nb covers best.
