So I plan on washing most of her clothes this weekend. Is there a difference between dreft and tide free and clear? Also I'm I supposed to wash bennies, sox, wash clothes or just clothes and blankets?

Just use free and clear detergent. Dreft is a gimic and has tons of fragrance in it that can irritate baby's skin. I don't know what bennies are but I washed everything fabric for DD. Bibs, wash cloths, burp cloths, clothes, blankets, even the swing cover (probably not necessary but eh, why not)

Ha oops I meant beanies. Thanks for the info.

Along the lines of pregnancy symptoms that disappear post delivery - my veins are now much more noticeable, especially on my boobs and legs. Assuming this is due to increased blood flow and swelling particularly in my boobs which have grown a lot. Will I remain "veiny" after birth? Not as concerned with my boobs, but with my legs staying this way. Thanks ladies for all your great info, has been so helpful for a FTM.

your boobs will probably stay veiny if you BF but your legs should go back to pretty much normal since the pressure of baby and uterus will be relieved off your lower extremities which is what causes you to get varicose veins like that
  • @jshrop‌ re dry hair: I'm white, but my hair is very dry. I think with very young children it won't matter as much, but as your DD gets older I would advise a "less is more" approach. I don't wash, brush, or blow dry my hair that often. When it was shorter, I just about never used a dryer on it and only brushed it when I washed it. Since it's long, I do have to dry it, but I try not to do blow outs all the time, just drying it a bit so it's not wet. Brushing can cause the hair to break, and, at least in my case, my hair doesn't actually tangle. Also, many hair products contain alcohol, which is very hard on dry hair. There are plenty of oil-based products, you just have to be aware of what you're choosing.

  • So I know you all answered about weight loss and breast feeding, but how much weight should I expect to lose post delivery right away?

Second, anyone experiencing a major dryness and no discharge?  I always hear about everyone getting the "snail trail" but I've actually experienced the exact opposite and have literally zero discharge throughout this pregnancy...

  • Chiming in with a q on kick counts. My dr didn't give me any info. Lately I've noticed eventually i can get to 10 movements in an hour, with the movements taking place with in 20 minutes. But after that lo just seems to chill and can go a while without moving much. Is this ok? I'm just looking for the 10 movements in 60 minutes?

Being with my LO rocks! DD born 6/13/14.

I was told to write down my start and stop times and that if I'm doing it around the same time every day I should notice a pattern to how long it takes to get the 10 movements. And that way I will recognize if it suddenly takes a lot longer.

I plan on using my Bob stroller as my one and only. I've researched around and have read that with the car seat attachment it can be a pain, not to mention the car seat we have already (and I love) doesn't work with the bob. I did register for the attachment and another car seat as I bought the car seat I already have & I'm sure I can let my boyfriend use that in his truck when needed/give to my parents whenever I'm done using it w the stroller BUT do I really need to do the car seat attachment in the stroller? Obviously I don't plan on doing anything other than light stuff such as shopping/going to see people/whatever until the baby is strong enough for me to use it as a jogging stroller as well. I just haven't found a TON of information on if it's that huge of a deal to use it from the get go

I exclusively used the car seat adapter with our stroller for the first 4-5 months. It might differ by stroller, but DD was too little to use the actualy stroller seat before that time. I could've probably tried to rig her up in there somehow with a head support etc..but it was just so much easier to plop the infant seat right onto the stroller.

My doctor didn't advise me to count kicks either pregnancy. I was told if I noticed a decrease in movement or couldn't remember the last time baby moved, or if havinga  bit of sugar or nudging baby wasn't getting her to move..to call. He sees it as an old school practice..but I know every dr has a different opinion.

I'm not positive how much and how many days because I wasn't really stepping on the scale too much the first few days after delivery. I gained exactly 25 lbs with my first pregnancy. I know that 10days pp I was fitting into my prepreg jeans although they were a tad bit tight...by my 6 wk appt i was down 20 lbs. I always sort of held onto that last 5 lbs. The first two days after delivery my stomach felt like a blob..a big deflated balloon..every day after that it got better

I gained 48 lbs with DS and lost 20 lbs in the first 5 days. the rest hung around for quite a while though I had to diet and exercise to lose it.
  • Re: hospital bags...what type of actual bag did you use?  I have a large beach-type bag that I normally use for 1-2 night trips and then my regular sized rolling carry on bag.  I'm worried the bag will be too small and the carry on too large (or that I'll look weird rolling luggage through L&D, lol).

We're using (and used) a medium duffel bag. I don't think you will look weird rolling luggage through because I'm sure many people do! I just don't have enough stuff for my rolling luggage because I can't stand having too many choices :) But the duffel bag holds a couple shirts, underwear, yoga/sweatpants, toiletries, camera, and clothes for DH.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Mease8 - I use their products for plenty of stuff already, and plan to use some for baby stuff as well. I actually stumbled across the Good Guide the other day (linked you to their baby soap recs) They have an awesome app you can use to scan things at the store and it's been helpful when trying to figure out what on earth I should try to use!

  • I started with a backpack then with the extra items I had DH pick up for me at home and the stuff they give you I ended up with a ton of stuff to bring home so I'll probably use a larger zippered beach bag this time. Also I'm sure DH will go home to shower and play with DS a little so I'll work on sending with him stuff I know I am not going to need anymore at the hospital so we don't have to lug out as much once we leave.

@Pepper6: I have a small overnight bag for now but will probably move stuff to my larger duffel as my EDD approaches and its more likely I'll need stuff for the babies. Plenty of people use actual luggage and unless you show up with like 3 rolling suitcases no one will think anything of it. Just don't be Selfie with your hospital packing and show up with a tarp ;)

  • DH and I finally signed up for our hospital class and the memo says to wear either slacks or shorts.  WTF is that about?  Am I going to be practicing spreading my legs or something?  Seems so random.

Our class had you do a lot of exercises that you can do at home while you are in the beginning phases of labor before it is time to go in. Quite a few involved a exercise ball so maybe they are looking to make sure you are clothes that you can easily move around and stretch in. My water broke and I had to go straight to the hospital so like half of the class was a waste for me since I wasn't about to lug my exercise ball into the hospital

  • For STMs who had 3 or 4D ultrasounds, did you find that your child looked like their ultrasound picture when they were born? I have a few 4D sonogram pics from the perinatologist I see every 6 weeks (they always switch it over at the end) and wondered how much he'll really look like that.

I waited about a month. My daughter never took one, my son LOVED it.
  • @Mease8, that's what we use and it worked great for all of C's stuff.  We get their free and clear because I don't like smells, but I would imagine you could use whatever.

I think we waited about 2-3 weeks. I have her one in the hospital but then the LC told us to wait. She used them until she was 4 months and then wanted nothing to do with them. Every baby is different!

Did any one do a delayed cord clamping? Did you get any pushback?

I asked my doctor about it when I was pregnant with Nola. He explained how the few minutes didn't make that big of a differnce, but I can't remember exactly what he said. Do your research and ask your doctor/midwife. I'm sure they all have different opinions on it.

  • If a person is overweight, will it be harder for them to feel Braxton Hicks? I have felt like my stomach/ uterus was tightening a few times recently, but since I have a nice layer of "fluff" over my stomach, I couldn't tell how tight it really was.

  • Re: cord clamping and cutting -- delayed is standard practice with our MWs, so zero push back.

I know with my practice at swedish ballard it's standard practice. They did say that you can donate/ bank or delay and that there's not usually enough to do both.

We're new to our area and didn't know anyone with small kids to get a recommendation from. So I just did a google search for pediatricians online and read peoples reviews on their. We ended up finding a great practice and a doctor we really love. Good luck!

We took the lazy route. There's a Children's Hospital half a mile from us and it has a primary care center. All the other options meant driving to the suburbs or further north. So we were like, "Yeah, that place is good."

luckily I used to work for our pediatrician so it was an easy choice but if you really feel like going around and meeting them all before choosing basically you just want to make sure they match up with your ideals in a way. ask them about their vaccination schedule, what they would do in various scenarios of illness (do they start prescribing meds and running tests right away or do they have a more wait and see approach?), what kind of labs and treatments they can do in house as opposed to sending you somewhere else to get done (ie X-rays, blood draws, breathing treatments, etc) and what hospitals they have rights at in case you ever need to go to one. this is just a really short, basic list... there are obviously lots more things you can ask
  • @abastian00‌ I asked neighbors with kids for recommendation. If you search on TB's home page, they have an article with suggested questions for a pediatrician.
  • @abastian00‌ I'm interviewing pediatricians based on recommendations from my OB and friends with kids. I listed some of the questions I ask them in this thread: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/comment/80619476#Comment_80619476. I find that in my area they all have the same point of view on things like circumcision and vaccination. The really important thing when meeting them is to see if you like them and their staff, can communicate well, etc.

  • For the record, M never used a pacifier (I'm not even sure we ever really used it - we hoped she'd find a way to self soothe, and I guess she did).

She definitely didn't use me as a pacifier (I was pretty much a disappointment in the whole boob world).

She also never sucked fingers or thumbs or any of that.

I'm kind of a pacifier idiot.  I'm afraid of them... b/c of the number of kids I see who are five and still walking around sucking on them.

I stayed in the hospital gown the rest of the night then after I showered the next day I put on a nightgown that my mom had bought. I think this time I will change into some comfortable pants and a nursing top and a sleeper nursing bra. They check your undercarriage quite often when they press on your belly (which is a whole other post...ouch!) but not to where you would have to take pants off, so I'm hoping pants will work well this time.
