I don't mind him being washed but I do want DH to be right there as we aren't circumcising.
I'm confused.. what does the circumcision have to do with that? They don't do this when they come out. You have to sign paperwork and they come into your room and talk to you about it and all that.
it sounds like you are worried they will just do it when you aren't aware. if that is the case don't be. It isn't a procedure you are not fully aware of when they do it and they take them to the OR or nursery anyway for that.
I don't want anyone to be away from his penis as they might try to retract the foreskin to clean which is a no no
Stuck in the box, gr! Anyway, they know this lol All boys are bathed before they're circed so literally every boy they bathe has foreskin so it's not like yours is going to be something they're not used to.
After speaking to my midwife about the benefits of delayed washing we waited about 12 hours after birth for both kids. Waiting a week or two? God no!
This. My MWs at a big hospital actually recommend delaying for 12-24 hours (though they do wipe any blood, etc off of the baby of course). But 1-2 weeks seems extreme. From my understanding, you just want to be able to rub the remaining vernix into the skin and let it absorb and then you're good to go.
Another reason to delay bath for at least a while that hasn't been mentioned is temp regulation. If you bathe a baby right after birth sometimes they get chilled and have trouble getting their temp back up. This can lead to the nurses and pedis wanting them under a warmer for a while. I mostly don't want to be separated from baby, so we'll wait a while and then do a quick bath that we help with (so fun!) and put baby back skin to skin. I think most hospitals are pretty flexible, you just share your desires and a bit of your reasoning and they will follow your lead. If there's meconium or concern about an infection in the amniotic fluid, we'll bathe sooner.

DS was. Born around 5pm and didn't get a bath until the next morning. I didn't notice a smell, but they did clean him off before he was given to me. I didn't get him for a few minutes because he wasn't breathing. By the time I got him he was cleanish and swaddled.
DH went with him for his first bath for pictures and they did use soap on his hair, he had a lot of hair! I would guess they used a small amount of soap on his body too, but it was mostly warm water.
Is this one of those threads where OP asks for opinions, but really they just want people to blow rainbow smoke up their ass?
Another vote here for team "get the gook off my baby please".
Actually, I ask for experiences... and what kind of smoke do you think i'm looking for? lol! I'm enjoying reading about everything everyone has had happen that helped shape their opinions on the topic, that is the point, to hear both sides of the coin.
What I don't like is someone being an asshole, and making a smartass comments about the question, as opposed to giving an intellectual answer based on their experience. I dont really have an opinion yet on the topic- I think waiting to bath sounds good in theory, but it is these woman's experiences (good and bad) that will help me to decide what it is that I want to do. Thats the point.. So, no, I don't need smoke, or rainbows and cupcakes, I just expect everyone to speak respectfully, and stick to the topic. K? Thanks

Yep. That's the rainbow smoke I was referring to.
Also, please don't expect an "intellectual" discussion, then follow up a response you don't like by calling someone a "smartass" or an "asshole". I just makes you sound like a whiney bitch with no sense of humour.

Yes. It would be worth finding out the hospital's policy on this. At mine, it is standard to delay the bath until the baby can regulate his/her own temperature. At my pre-admission clinic, the nurse said it's usually somewhere between 4-6 hours. But they also said that if we wanted to put off longer than that, they were fine with it.
I honestly don't even remember how soon after birth DS was bathed. I'm pretty sure it was while I was still in the delivery room, before I was moved over to a postpartum room. I'm also thinking I was still getting stitched up while this took place so it was most likely within the first 45 min to an hour. I'm definitely team clean baby for this LO as well.
Also OP, you're making a complete ass out of yourself. You're stirring shit up more than participating in a conversation.
Re: Not bathing newborn in hospital-
@fsumom
I am confused? what happens if they pull the foreskin back to clean it?
edit: nevermind didn't go to second page saw someone answered my question!

We didn't wash either of our boys for a day or two afterwards. There was no smell and no issue.
