Birthing options: I know it's early!!

So, I was watching "More of the Business of Being Born" (the one with the celebrities telling their birth stories) and it got my little wheels turning. I know it's crazy early, but have any of you started thinking about what kind of birth experience you would like to have?

A doula with an unmedicated hospital birth?
A doula with a medicated hospital birth?
Midwife with a home birth?
All the pain meds you can find?
Somewhere in between?

Me? I'm toying with the idea of a home birth because I've heard so many stories of women being bullied into episiotomies, birthing in positions that weren't right for them, and so on...
I'm sure my husband would be much more comfortable in a hospital and me having a doula for support...

This is such an exciting time with SO many options available to us.

Re: Birthing options: I know it's early!!

  • I will 100% be birthing in a hospital with an epidural like I did with DS. I wasn't pressured into anything I didn't want and it was enjoyable. Plus, DS wasn't breathing when he came out so I like the security if knowing help is just a floor away.

  • Yes I asked the question in "decisions...decisions" post. There were a lot of great answers and it showed me that there are endless ways to answer this. Someone suggested that I watch "Business of Being Born" . I watched and it was awesome! I found it on Netflix. And thank goodness that we have so long to think about a birth plan because I will probably change my mind a few times lol

  • If you can go for a home birth! That was my dream. But my body had other plans, so this time I have to go to the hospital. I'm choosing one in the next town because it's a new hospital and their policies aren't as outdated. If I have to have a csection again then at least with this hospital I won't be seperated. I would love to have an unmedicated birth.  My midwife and Dh is my support.

  • My first birth ended in a C.  (My daughter was very wrapped up in her cord.)  After 20+ hours of labour at home...  the last several with my midwife there...  we ended up going to the hospital.  Things went downhill pretty fast once we got there.

Anyway, when I contacted my local midwifery office with this pregnancy, they said they would only take me if I wanted a VBAC.  (Which I do.)   As things progress we will see if that will be at a nearby hospital (known to be VERY low intervention) or even at home.

I am considering a doula....  but really, midwives do such a great job...  and my husband was amazing during my last labour.  I don't know if I will bother.

  • I'll be at the hospital. My plan is no epidural for now but we will see when it gets closer :)
  • I was at the hospital with no epidural with DD. I'd like to repeat that labor as it went as perfect as I could have hoped for it to. However, I'm going into it with the same attitude I had with DD...whatever happens happens. There's not much you really can control even if you want to.

I just googled Bradley Method and I am now intrigued. Thanks! I like the idea of going drug free. My mom did with my older brother. It surprised me when I found out because I never really thought of her as being physically strong.

  • I would like to go naturally and be able to relax in the water, but with twins my options could be limited.

I'm planning on having a hospital birth with a midwife.  Hopefully low intervention but if problems arise, backup is available quickly.  My Mom actually attempted a home birth with me but had a hospital transfer with forceps delivery.  I bet if she would have been in the hospital the whole time she would have had a Csection for failure to progress.

  • I will also be having another hospital birth with a midwife.  As with my first two, I am hoping to go it natural, but if I don't I have the option of pain management.  Having a midwife at the hospital gave me a happy medium of crunchy and conventional.  When I chose epidurals my midwife understood and was supportive.  I also loved that the midwives have a MUCH SMALLER group of mothers that they are tending to in the hospital so they can sit with you for an hour if you want, talking and helping you labor.

I have very much enjoyed my birth experiences doing it this way.

    Good luck!
  • I plan on giving birth in the hospital with my midwife present. Last time I had an epidural due to horrible back labor and the on call OB was there for the delivery because mine was on vacation.  I would love to go un-medicated this time, but I will leave the option for epidural on the table if the pain gets to be too much.
  • Planning on a hospital birth with OB. I have very low pain tolerance, so will definitely be planning on a epidural. Plus, my nephew's cord was wrapped around his neck and arm several times, so the security in knowing help is right there is reassuring - especially in our rural area. I have the same doc as my SIL and one main reason I chose him was his quick decision for C-section with my nephew.

I had an emergency c/s after laboring for 20 hours. He was wrapped in his cord and his heart rate dropped into the 20s as we went in. Scariest moments of my life. I never progressed above a 7 (that's when I got my epi that didn't work on the right side of my body). The MWs in my practice don't feel I'm a good candidate at all for a VBAC, so we'll likely schedule a c/s. And I labored with an awesome MW up until the moment he deceled so low. She even came in OR and did our pictures.

  • I have some big questions for my Dr. At my first appointment. I want to have a natural hospital birth. I think it would be cool and gratifying to have a homebirth. But they don't do that in my area anyway as I have recently discovered. And I briefly looked for a birthing center and couldn't find one. So first I will chat with Dr. About her feeling on natural. If I'm not impressed I will have to find someone else. :(
  • Last time I had a natural birth at the hospital with an OB. My labor and delivery was extremely short though, so if it had been longer I probably would have taken advantage of some type of pain management option. DD was born three hours after my water broke. I spent about two hours of that time traveling to the hospital and the last hour in the delivery room there. I'm hoping for a fast, natural birth this time around too, but I think I lucked out last time. I personally would never consider a home birth.

  • Like #1, we'll do hospital with a midwife without medication and low intervention. (hopefully)

I really prepared myself the first time around to expect the unexpected and if I needed drugs to take em or if it ended in a C-section that would be okay too. I thankfully had an uneventful, non medicated, 36 hour labor and delivery...and LOVED every minute of it :) though I would like a little quicker delivery this time, less than 24 hours would be nice!

  • I'll be doing exactly what I did with DD, 100% in the hospital with epidural! We had a great experience the first time around and didn't feel pressured or uncomfortable at all. The doctor and nurses were amazing so we see no reason to change our plan.

  • We never felt pressured for anything. I loved our hospital, birth experience, doctor.....
Now we have moved so hopefully this one is great too. I had a wonderful epidural and felt nothing
  • I will be at a hospital for sure! I had an epidural with my first and after 26 hours of labor my son came out not breathing with a dropping heart rate. I couldn't imagine not having doctors there for quick intervention if it's needed! I wasn't able to get an epidural with my second (I went from 4cm to 10cm in 20 minutes!!). I am hoping to be able to get an epidural with this one although I know I can do it either way !!

  • Home births seem so irresponsible with me ESPECIALLY without a nurse midwife. A doula doesn't have the medical training. My sister is a doula-she knows her limits.

I had a medicated birth with an OB last time. I'm considering a medicated birth with nurse midwives this time. I've learned ob's are useless in the delivery room. They show up at the end to catch the baby. I would like more support than that. I may hire my sister. I haven't decided. I don't really want to fork over $600.

I think having a medicated birth is irresponsible with all of the side effects that can harm baby.

For me, a hospital birth just doesn't make sense. Teto but please do not make a blanket statement that home births are irresponsible when clearly you don't understand.

  • 100% hospital birth with epidural. I think I'm going to try for a VBAC. DS was born via emergency c-section due to fetal distress. Praying for my body to have contractions naturally. Pitocin is from the devil.

  • I will for sure be in the hospital, with my OB. She is amazing and given everything we had to go through with my last pregnancy, I trust her judgement more than anything. I am currently working on a birth plan that is likely going to include an epidural, unless I become suddenly overwhelmed with the idea that I have a higher pain tolerance than I actually do.

  • C-section.. First was natural but my son was a dry birth ( my water had been leaking slowly for hours) and I was a month and a half early. I ended up in labor for over 24 hours and nothing. I ended up getting a c-section.
Doc already decided this will be another one & I do not mind at all .
  • CPM & at home! I want the more personalized care and the comfort of having someone on call 24/7. My CPM is one of the best in my area and I've known her forever (15 years!). She was a big help to me with DS even though she wasn't my care provider. If for some reason I had a panic about my son, she would come over and check his HB with the doppler. She doula'd for me and billed me for a 12pk of diet Dr pepper.

If you think its irresponsible you really should look into the training and testing these ladies (and I suppose men) have to go through to become CPMs. It is quite a lot. Most people who deliver at home know to go to the hospital if a problem arises, and CPMs know when the hospital is needed.

  • This! you are exposing the baby to medicine that is unnecessary 98% of the time.  All around the world a midwife at home is the main choice for birth and they fair way better than the U.S in terms of maternal death and fetal death.
