Re: Decisions... Decisions....

  • Hopefully like my first. In a hospital, drug free. I loved my hospital.

  • With my previous pregnancies I had hospital births with OB and epidural. I had 2 wonderful experiences and one difficult one. I just had to do a little research and decide what worked best for me. And remember to be flexible! Almost nothing with children goes as planned.

This time around we plan to go the same route as before..I may try to go without epi but it will all depend on how things progress day of.

  • I had a c-section with my first. I was in labor at the hospital for 29 hours and couldn't dialate past 6cm. I was team epidural all the way. I asked for it when I was only 2cm. Worst decision ever. The baby's head was a little crooked and obstructing my bladder. I believe that if I was able to be up and moving that in would have been able to get her in the right position and have a vaginal birth. The kicker is it slipped out so I went through roughly 10 hours of induced labor with pitocin feeling everything. My last nurse ( I had 4 I was there so long). Told me if I could handle the pitocin labor I could handle a natural labor.

Now, I am between a hospital birth with a Cnm or a Hbac. I meet with the CNM at the end of the month. They are also requiring that I meet with an Ob to go over the risks etc. I don't have high expectations.

My heart tells me homebirth. The idea of being in my own home really appeals to me. I will labor naturally this time. I have no doubt about that. I have started my prenatal yoga and walking so I am in the best shape possible for an natural birth. I just need to take the leap.

  • I will be having a MW assist at my home birth. I had an unmedicated natural child birth in a hospital with my first. It was a relatively short labor for a ftm, about 5 hours. When I was pregnant with my second we discussed a homebirth but didn't commit. We were planning on going to the same hospital. At 36w I was having major anxiety about this decision and we decided to make the switch to a home birth MW. Best. Decision. Ever. I ended up with a 1.5 hour super speed, super intense labor and I wouldn't have made it to the hospital.
My births were very similar!  5 1/2 hour natural hospital birth with my first, super fast 1 1/2 hour homebirth with my second!  My midwife only arrived 15 minutes before he was born, and any ride to the hospital would have been hellish!

I am planning a homebirth again this time, but am pretty nervous about the pain.  My first birth wasn't too bad but the speed of the second meant all that pain was compressed into a tortuous hour or so.  I was kind of shell shocked after and am not looking forward to doing it again.  I'm hoping this time will be a bit slower so I have time to catch my breath between contractions.  Still, relaxing in my own bed afterwards, letting family members care for the baby in another room so I could rest was really great and a much better experience than I had had in the hospital the first time.

  • Watched Business of Being Born on Netflix. Just wanted to say whoever suggested it is awesome!!! Though I still think I'm going hosp/epi route, I really enjoyed all of the information. Maybe on # 2 I will be braver and use one of the birthing centers here instead.

I will be in a hospital, with a midwife. I aim to have a natural birth. I had one with DS, and I had a great experience (mind you, it was painful, but i felt in control and want to do it again without meds)

  • We chose a birth center natural birth for my first.  I was no o.k with the side effect of an epidural and I want to be able to move and be in water.  My labor was just 4 hours and I greatly attribute it to being in a calm, serene place.  With out the epidural I was also able to direct my pushing and i didn't tear.  My midwives applied warm compresses and counterpressure and I think it really saved my vagina from damage.  It was amazing for my son and I to not be drugged and be able to bond and start breastfeeding off on a great foot.  I was then able to leave just 4 hours later and go home.  So I was at the birth center for a total of 8 hours and back to my life.  I won't have it any other way this go around.

  • A story of my great-great (I'm sure there's a lot more greats, but you get the picture) aunt. She was full term and still working the fields when she felt her water break. She walked back to the house, gave birth, fed baby and returned to the field to finish working.

I know I have a very high pain tolerance as well as a morbid curiosity of wanting to know what natural childbirth felt like. Also, I truly feel that we as humans pump our bodies with so many chemicals from the food we eat to medications that I didn't want to introduce any more substances. Proud to say I went all 36 hours without medication or interventions.

I had 2 great mentors who also had non-medicated births. they really helped me prepare myself for the process and I knew if they could do it, than I could too.
